This thread is full of so many meaningless clichés.

I imagine 99% here agree we need to give him time to do what he wants and we will progress but i don't get why so many speak as If our record so far is expected and shouldn't be held against him.

It's unacceptable despite being on the right path or not

So... we should've beaten the league champions, despite us being down to 10 men for 60mins, playing away from home and City not losing 3 games in a row in about 4 years?

United title winning sides have gone through similar patches as well which we are going atm. I believe we played well today but suffered from bad luck/stupid mistakes on a different day we could have at least had a draw. Sometimes it happens , you play well but fail to register the points you deserve. I feel this is the case right now for us as well. As a unit our performance is million miles better than it was last season. We have been let down by stupid individual errors(today) , bad refereeing(Burnley and Leicester) , bad luck(West Brom) switching off at the wrong time(Leicester) and foremost injuries and suspensions to key players. Sometimes there's a very thin margin between a 3 points and not.
What matters is the sort of performances players are putting in , because when you think you're capable of doing well and more often than not outplay other teams and feel that your performances are on track you just know that sooner or later the results will be back on track as well.

Nah, he's played as a second striker but a striker nonetheless. He's never been an AM, let alone a CM.

He just runs around so much that people get confused. But he's always, always been a striker, and always will be.

Nonsense.

Rooney's been a #10 for majority of his career. Different from playing CM but a #10 nonetheles

A 'second striker' is an attacking midfielder. They drop deep, they link the play between midfield and attack and all the rest of it. Same thing, just a different 'modern' name for it.

Can Rooney play as a striker? of course he can, and has done very well at times. He's still spent most of his career playing behind out and out strikers though.

Players look like they know what they're supposed to do now, time to see a tangible return in results with Crystal Palace, Hull and Stoke at home in 3 of our next 4 games.

Nah, a second striker isn't an AM. Gonna have to agree to disagree, this is one of those that will just go on and on!

Wayne Rooney has played as a striker all his career. He is a striker.

United actually played well today. Better side with 11 v 11. Smalling ruined the game for United. In the last 20 minutes United still deserved a draw from this match. Shame the chances weren't converted since they could have kickstarted United's season. Frustrating loss for LvG this one.

De Gea saved us twice before the sending off. We werent the better side.

I actually agree with @JUPITER about Rooney. Not that we lost because of that, but rather that it was a poor decision to play him there. He was useless in the first half. I put it down to lack of match fitness.

The Arsenal away game is going to be an interesting barometer of how we are getting on. For those complaining at our start, at least the performances are better and you believe we can fight back- under Moyes that spirit just wasn't there.

Exactly, we've been miles better in that regard bar the Leicester game. Look at Fellaini, he's a different player under van Gaal and he was a Moyes player FFS, we'll be alright but really would be nice for us to return some results and knit together a full 90 mins of good play.

Despite De Gea's saves United were still the better side in the first 30 minutes and controlling the most of the game. City were dangerous on the counter attack a few times indeed but they couldn't control the game cause Man Utd were.

However and whichever way you look at it, 10 points from 13 games is just not good enough. Leaving today's performance out of it for obvious reasons - although in the end we should have got a draw or even a win - we are not playing any better now than we were under Moyes at this time last season. We just have some better players now that's all. Moyes got us a draw against Chelsea. Moyes could have done what we did today, stay compact, defend and try and nick a draw. That's what he does. Now I'm not saying in anyway that he should have stayed or was the right man for the job. No. No way. But if we don't start improving our performances and getting some regular winning streaks going very soon; then the top 4 will soon become out of reach and some serious questions will start getting asked of LvG and his staff.

He got us a win V Arsenal at home as well.

For all the money that he had splashed to try to get us to the top 4, and seeing now we're languishing in 6-7 position, this is simply unacceptable

3 points from 5th. If we won today two points away from City. It was never going to be easy sailing. We've had injures galore ontop of that too.

He'll come good. I believe the tactics and the playing philosophy is correct, it's the players that are letting him down. Just individual, silly errors that we are clinically being punished for - week in, week out.

The next 9 or 10 games will be the defining time for him, if we kick on from here and win the majority of those games will be in or around the top four but anything less than that and he will be under pressure, whether that is right or not won't really matter.

I think he has made improvements and been unlucky with injuries but so far he hasn't done a good job because we have won three out of ten, I don't see us finishing ahead of City, Chelsea or arsenal so we are in a scrap with a number of other sides for fourth, spurs and liverpool look poor but they will improve, if we don't improve soon though Southampton could surprise everyone.

It's a weird season. Everybody is beating everybody else. If we are still like this at Christmas then be worried. We need a settled side and all these defensive injuries are killing us.

Reminds of last season; we went in the New Year with 5 wins on the trot, 4 points from 4th; Carrick, Rafael and Van Persie to come back....

Hope springs eternal!

We absolutely need 9 points out of 9 from our next three games, including at the Emirates. The team is moving in the right direction but we really need points to show that progress now.

The difference in the performance between today and the game last year against City away is scary. We are going in the right direction with LVG. We were going in circles with Moyes.

We'll be alright. I still think we might have a bit of a struggle to get 4th, but the main issue we have now, in contrast to last season, is with individuals rather than the overall system. So if we have to get rid of the likes of Rafael, Jones, Smalling then so be it, though I'd prefer they just improved rather than be replaced. But LVG will do it if needed.

I would rather be watching LvG's Manchester United than the utter tripe David Moyes served up. This is when Moyes season went downhill. Hopefully it is onward and upwards for Louis's team.

Aye.

We look a team now, the points will come.

We're miles better than we ever were under Moyes, the movement and shape is better. You've got Blind dropping in between the CB's, Fellaini and Rooney/Mata dropping into midfield, Di Maria tucking in, it's all pre-planned. We've just got to cut out the silly defensive errors and be more ruthless in the final third. Van Gaal hasn't once blamed injuries or referees and our spirit has been vastly improved in the last 15 mins of the last 3 games.

This. It's all very well people saying we are moving in the right direction - personally I am yet to be convinced, far from it in fact - but if we are, the only real way of showing that is results. And however you look at it, we are 3 games without a win now.

Around a similar period last season we won against Arsenal at home I believe. It wasn't really until the december consecutive home losses against Everton and Newcastle where our season started to truly fall apart.

Ok Mr Happy, solutions to the doom & gloom you're spreading?

Thought we were unlucky today & against Chelsea, thought we were well beaten last season in just about every game against good opposition last season! You can't see the progress? That's bewildering.
