Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

Now I hope he rips into players being idiots and regroups ASAP. We've got a few wins to string together to show for. I'm extremely optimistic and have no doubts on LvG being the best man for this job, but the table doesn't lie. 13 out of 30 is extremely poor given the players we've got.

IMO, just seeing the character of the team after losing a man and going one down proves to me that we are on the right track. Much more spirit and belief in United under van Gaal than it was last year. This would have been a thrashing last year. We gave it a good go and had City pinned back despite the one man advantage today.

How anyone can't take positives from the past few games I don't know. i rewatched the Chelsea game the other day and we were quality first half, best I've seen us in terms of controlling a big game in ages. Today, big patches of the game where we produced solid football under intense pressure.

January onwards with some new signings, we will be firing. The team as a whole just looks better, even guys like Valencia and Fellaini are winning me over because they're being solid and professional with their performances - not shying away. He's given the players confidence back. The team looks on the up, there is momentum building there.. just need a tad more luck on our side.

Not the best match to judge him, when one of your defenders decide to leave his brains at home. It wasn't embarrassing at all, though City were clearly the better team. Should we be hoping for more? Maybe, after splurging a lot of money but we know our deficient areas haven't been strengthened. And we did try much more than most times last season albeit against a 'low on confidence' City outfit without one of their best player.

It is his fault not buying another defender. Even the most casual fan would have told you that we needed a central defender as those 3 are highly unreliable.

He will put that right in January no doubt

we looked much better, and we are constantly progressing. Despite all the cards stacked against us, we continue to march on. The negativity on this forum is sensational. If you can't see our positive transition over the past few months than you should take a break from football. We are getting better.

Looking at how much LVG has gotten out of the players, only someone checking the results and not watching the match could possibly criticize.

I don't like the change back to the 4-2-3-1. Not at all. Think we looked brilliant attacking wise with the diamond but now that's gone a bit.

He's doing worse than Moyes, but you can't actually say that or you get rounded on. Moyes was laughed at for taking the same players that won the league to seventh... LvG has taken the same players that won the league PLUS £150,000,000 in new signings to ninth...
You're comparing 10 games in to 35 or so? Solid comparison.

Seems most on the cafe are like that then. The negativity here is beyond belief.

The one he's bought in Rojo isn't looking that good so far either frankly to play this high line. And now he's injured too.

Problem partly is down to him not organizing the team defensively properly which ties in with previous comments about his management.

That's a lazy oft used excuse on here. When you consider the amount of change in the line up who exactly are you referring to?

Rooney and Rvp were fine last season as was De Gea and Januzaj.
Rafael, Jones and Smalling are the only players you could throw into this category.
We've a brand new backline for starters. Smalling, Jones and Evans can't be relied upon to be fit so we've aeen a lot of Rojo, Blackett and Mc Nair(who has performed better than his more experienced partners). Everything is new. New defence, new middield, even the way we attack is different. That's a huge amount of change.

United's on pitch leaders are gone too. Vidic, Evra and Ferdinand were players you would've turned too in moments of crisis. They needed to go because they were past their best but it's still a massive upheaval when they're gone. Their replacement, Shaw aside, are of a poor standard too. Too many poor players in this side.

This thread is full of so many meaningless clichés.

I imagine 99% here agree we need to give him time to do what he wants and we will progress but i don't get why so many speak as If our record so far is expected and shouldn't be held against him.

It's unacceptable despite being on the right path or not

Most likely, yes.

It was mental to start a striker in CM against a top team, he's not a CM and he's not match fit. It's a massive, massive weak link and the team has collapsed under it.

He's played as an attacking midfielder for most of his career.

As far as him being a weak link goes, bar a couple of passes early on, he played pretty well. Not outstanding by any means but decent enough.

He's gotten in new players ( thankfully). He's gotten shag all extra out of the players we already had.

I don't really understand how people can think just signing a defender or two will make us title challengers, smalling jones and evans played some great games under SAF, they were all top class, especially evans. Do we not think it's possible that, while we have improved massively going forward, it is simply at the expense of defence tactically?

Last season it looked like no matter what attacking players we signed we weren't going to improve going forward, why can't it be the same this season but with defenders? We play a very risky style and tbh our defence is likely going to stay this way, we will just need to outscore opponents

10 games: 3 W 4 D 3 L

He needs to start getting the points soon.
As long as our defense is like that we might be adding a few more draws/losses to it... Really need to strengthen in the winter window. Any word on when Jones/Evans is back

Hopefully, it won't be too late by then.

Although his chase of Vermaelen, and then the buy of Rojo doesn't fill me in with confidence.

He's experienced enough to know what we need now he's been here for a few months

Agree with this, I think it was a mistake to change to that just as the players were looking like they were getting used to the diamond.

Thought we got the set up pretty much spot on today, and bar the red I'd say we would have gotten something out of the game. Considering how nervous City got against 10 a goal up, imagine what they would have been like going into the last 20 minutes against 11 and still 0-0.

Smalling let his team down today, simple as that. I'd be fuming with him for that first yellow if I was his manager.

What most teams do when rebuilding is start from the back; that way they can at least grind out results when not playing well. We've done the opposite and need to be at our best going forward every game to make up for the inevitable soft goals/individual errors. We'll be great once we sort out the center backs, but I fear that's not going to happen until the summer.

He hasn't though... he's played as a centre forward all his career - sometimes playing out of position as a wide left striker and more rarely as a midfielder.

He is a striker.

I like the diamond but against teams like City and Chelsea who can stretch the play i think its asking for trouble

Woeful start but today, can't fault him. Nothing he can do about Smalling's idiotic moments.

The results haven't been anywhere near good enough but the performances have been encouraging and we seem to be getting gradually better all the time.

Whether it proves to be right or not, I get the feeling that we're capable of going on a run. Never had that last year.

Let's hope so, man. Not looking good so far.

It's not but take confidence from the fact the level of performances from last season are improving. Once we get the defence sorted we will climb the table

Seemed very down beat in his interview with the Beeb. The reality sinking in.

He's played as an attacking midfielder behind the striker more than he ever has as an out and out striker.

Nah, he's played as a second striker but a striker nonetheless. He's never been an AM, let alone a CM.

He just runs around so much that people get confused. But he's always, always been a striker, and always will be.

I agree. Obviously looking at the table it looks like a poor show, but we've definitely seen some real glimpses of progress in the way the team is playing and also fighting till the end in tough games. That, combined with his general demeanour and past successes, is enough to give me confidence that things will pick up. I'm not really going to think about the table until after the new year, just concentrate on the performances and signs of progress. I really have faith in him, despite the difficult start we've endured.
