He's half-right. We controlled the tempo of the match a lot better tonight than we have all season, the first ten minutes aside. We gave away two terrible goals, but dominated otherwise. I can see what he's getting at.

I, personally, don't think the football is anything to write home about at all. Nor our 'control'
We basically 'control' the ball in non-threatening parts of the pitch, and struggle to keep it on the deck as we advance up the pitch.

Still poor shape, huge gaps, over-reliance on getting it wide.

West Brom knew we'd keep the ball in Blind/fullback territory, struggle to keep it higher up and through the middle, lose our shape, and then they could counter. And it worked.

Ditto. It was certainly our best away performance this season.

A draw away from home against a West Brom side that've beaten Tottenham, Hull, Burnley and were unlucky to lose against Liverpool isn't the worst result in the world, at all.

People are reacting like it was at OT.

I really don't want to see RvP starting against Chelsea though. He literally offers nothing and his playing 90 mins every game is starting to make LvG look like a joke regarding his inclusion.

He's more than half right. I'm not really sure how we didn't win. They obviously took their goals well, but apart from us imploding West Brom did absolutely nothing all game. Can't even remember them creating a half chance.

In all fairness it may not have been our flashiest game but at least we played for 90 minutes instead of 60.

I think its fair to say that we will do well to get in the top 4 this season.

Clearly this rebuilding process is going to take years and not months. At least we are headed in the right direction though.

Now if only he can get our back four to play like men and not a bunch of pussies who piss themselves everytime the opponent comes forwards.

We could have scored a hat full of goals tonight. Easily. If we had there would be praise for him. Don't know why half you pricks bother following united.
He's had a go at WB tonight and we got caught out on the break by poor defending and 2 class finishes. Doubt we will be as loose against better opposition. Get behind your manager and stop moaning like school kids.

He's barely had 3 fit senior defenders to work with at the same time all season. The midfield and attack are much better under his tutelage, give the defence a chance now they're returning to fitness.

He had a chance to sign defenders, we singed one very late on. Most of the fans said this was going to happen and surprise, surprise, it happened!

We are playing MUCH better football now than we have for a few years. The defensive organisation or lack of it is what is killing us.

We have just played a game away and had 65% possession and 22 shots. 9/10 times you win the game comfortably.

We have been following United for years, we knew the injuries were coming. He had no idea about how crooked these guys are.

Everyone knows we were after Vermaelen who went to Barcelona (and hasn't been fit) and Hummels who wasn't leaving Dortmund. He's made it clear he isn't going to sign players for the sake of signing players, they have to fit the profile (whatever that means). I don't know what miracle people were expecting. We signed a LB and a CB and most people would have thought Jones, Smalling and Evans would have been enough cover for the other one CB spot. Hopefully we can keep them fit for a sustained period. They're not shit they just struggle with injuries.

Surely Giggs could have told him? Or he could do some homework on the team he took over.

Like you said, Vermaelen would've been a mistake and it's worrying that we were so serious about him. I have always defended Jones and Smalling but I'm starting to doubt them. Vidic and Rio were so good they made them look good, without either of them we look lost. Don't understand why we didn't go for Garay tbh.

Didn't watch the first half. Anyone care to give a 'reasonable' summary of it? Cheers.

Edit: sorry, wrong thread.

Despite being frustrated with this season so far, many people are failing to remember an important fact - this is a learning curve for LVG too in that it is his first season in English Football. He said himself in his post match interview that he was searching for the right 'balance' and that he has realised a physical aspect is important in the premiership whereas it maybe isn't so much in other leagues he has managed in. We are all frustrated, but the guy knows what he's doing.

His persistence with the painfully out of form RvP is really getting on my tits. Falcao was too jet-lagged to start so what did that make Di Maria, who played in fecking China?

That blind spot aside, I do think we're seeing signs of our shit coming together. Starting to see genuine progress. Admittedly, from a diabolical baseline but still...

Lots of possesion, but never really threatened to get in behind. West Brom scored a great counter attacking goal, then just let us pass it round for the next 40 minutes.

It's been annoying me since West Ham.

The only improvement I see is our British record signing is playing good football and Herrera/Blind are better than Cleverley. That has also come at the cost of our fast exciting wing play.

I have no idea what obvious improvements you lot are seeing, very low standards

You can see the team improving which makes tonights result far easier to take.

It is a shame because United should be higher in the table, the current 10 point gap between Chelsea could easily be 5/4 points and would make the next match very interesting.

Patience is the what we need for the time being.

I'm sorry what?

The footballs already about 10x better than last season. If you can't see that then I recommend watching tiddlywinks or something instead.

So what's with Uniteds loss of momentum in the 60th minute anyway? Before today, Uniteds latest goal was in the 63rd minute. Is it just tiredness from our most dangerous players?

I really hope he can figure this out and I am a bit more confident about it as Van Gaal is a proven manager.

The football so far this season outweighs the football on display for the whole of last season without a doubt.

To be honest, that's the only thing keeping me calm right now.

I do think he is surprised by the PL though, I don't think he knew it was this hard.

Almost terrible result but tbf minus Shaw/Rafael's brainfart moments, it could have been a better performance tonight.
Still disappointed that RvP is still untouchable. Sigh ... I thought LvG was much better than this.

There was a 24 hour difference or so between the matches. Obviously they did not return in the same time and that makes a difference.

Why is everybody so paranoid about this? Do you believe in Illuminati too? LvG isn't a coach who favours players for no reason. Di Maria played in Hong Kong, injured himself and didn't last the full game. Falcao had some kind of strain while playing for Columbia and went around the world, quite obvious it was a good decision not to push him. Imagine we would miss Di Maria, Rooney and Falcao vs. Chelsea. And it hasn't been a matter of Falcao vs RVP this season yet, why do people keep referring to this? The most dangerous we've looked was when both were on the pitch and if Rooney gets back, Mata migh be the one who suffers, not Falcao or RVP.

I think some of you exaggerate how good the football is.

ADM plays some good stuff but you arent really scoring that many, and dont look particularly dangerous.

It might be better than some of the stuff under Moyes but its not better than anything under SAF.

Well, it's not.
We still seem allergic to playing through the middle unless Di Maria does it himself. It's all nice, but it's largely in non-threatening areas of the pitch
'Blind to Rafael, back to Blind, to Mata, back to Blind, to Di Maria and cross.'
We look better, but we should be with the money spent.

Still way too comfortable for our opponents (who aren't QPR)

It should do given the money spent. To date has Van Gaal got the best out of the players who underperformed last season? Not for me.

If Rafael hadn't played Berahino on in their second goal we would have won the match tonight and we would be talking for a great comeback, a solid performance and we would be celebrating our third win in a row.

This team has weaknesses and tries to live with them and get better. We know we don't have the personnel to press and we know that the lack of a ball winning midfielder is putting our defense under a lot of pressure. This won't change, at least until January.

Herrera wasn't feeling good and we didn't have anyone else to carry the ball and become an extra option in the attack. What was LvG supposed to do? Maybe do a Moyes and play Blind alongside Fletcher or Carrick in an dysfunctional and immobile midfield?

There is still a lot of work to be done but we have certainly improved and i believe we will get better. We create chances, we score goals and we're trying to both cover our weaknesses and build our attacks in an orthodox way. There will come a time when the opponent won't score two goals with two shots on target and the refs will realize that awarding us a penalty from time to time isn't a capital crime.

As for the press, they can say whatever the feck they want. I'm sure they're loving this and i wonder why Rodgers isn't getting any criticism for Liverpool's poor form this season... At least LvG was honest about it, he admitted that it was wrong to talk about a three month period and he said openly that, right now, Chelsea and City are much better teams than United.
