Lost or 24?

Lost is my favourite show, 24 is great too but there's just something about Lost that made it different to any other show for me.

Lost. 24 just got tedious after season 3.

Lost. Even though it has a confusing twisting plot, that involves allsorts of aspects from science to religion it still doesn't stretch reality as much and is more believable than 24.

Lost Season 1 is the better than anything either show has to offer.

But looking at all seasons together 24 wins very comfortably

Think it is unfair to compare likes of Wire and Sopranos with 24 etc.

That is like comparing Godfather with Die Hard. Shows like Breaking bad are class apart while those like House are just there for some light entertainment.

LOST turned out rubbish because it tried to be something more than it should have. Shame. 24 stuck to its limits and never tried to add any other dimension. Very formulaic and repetitive at times but still on the whole gets a better score than LOST. Some individual arcs of LOST are much better than limited scope of 24.

Both are a level below so many other shows.

The Wire
Sopranos
The Shield
Oz
West Wing
Sons of Anarchy

Do yourself a favour and watch all the above first. Then you'll see whats wrong with lost especially.

I agree there's a gulf between them but why is the comparison unfair?

There's load of really good TV out there, shouldn't people be warned before wasting dozens of hours watching vacuous shite?

If I had a couple of hours to kill at the weekend and hadn't watched any famous movies, I would appreciate it if someone told me to use that time to watch Godfather instead of Die Hard.

Been watching both and it's without a doubt 24.In Lost, I despise too many high profile characters to enjoy the show (Kate,Jack,Hurley,Said).
I have found myself skipping many parts of episodes due to pure hatred only to read reviews of what exactly happened.
In 24 there are also characters I don't like but it's rarely the main ones

I also only enjoy viewing 24 on tv once a week, as doing the whole catchup thing, watching a few episodes one after the other, makes it seem a bit bollocks.

Well you can compare them and say The Wire is better, because of course it is, it is the best the series of all time after all.

But to say a movie like Godfather makes Die Hard shit is not correct. I would prefer to watch Godfather as well but that does not make Die Hard not worth a watch.

As I said, 24 is very limited, has plenty of poor writing and plot holes. But when it works, it is pretty good for what it aims to be. And to the credit of its creators, more often that not they have somehow pulled it off.

24>Lost simply because 24 is a complete series every new season whilst if you've missed a season of Lost, you're fecked basically. Plus Lost 'tried to hard' if I can put it that way.

24 - Generic popcorn entertainment

Lost - Writing quality differs largely, but despite how cheesy this sounds it really did create a cult phenomenon that will be remembered for years.

Pogue's probably watched one Season of 24 and is basing the other 7 on that ;)

You're not far wrong there, Elvis.

I watched the whole first season and enjoyed it (in a dumb, popcorn movie kind of way) but lost interest a few episodes into season two (which was just stupid)

I couldn't even stomach more than the first 4 or 5 episodes of Lost, mind you.

No doubt people will say I should have stuck with them a bit longer, so they start to grow on me but life's too short to try to acquire a taste for mediocre television shows, especially when there's lots of really good stuff out there to watch instead (see Decotron's list above)

I love the mistakes in the first series. The cameraman in clear view while Ninas in the barn. The tech firing off the bullet effects kneeling beside kieffer during the shootout on the pier etc

Watch Season 5 and you won't be disappointed. Season 2 and 3 were great, Season 4 was good but not as good as the preceding 3.

Season 1 of LOST was very good. Solid writing, contrasted with deep character stories. As someone said on the other thread, it played up a lot of aspects of starting a civilization pretty well. No surprise that it was the only season to win an Emmy.

Aye, that's true. Especially when you consider the amount of time that's invested in a series, a bad movie is over 2 hours, a bad TV show won't be over for years (unless it's so shit it get's cancelled).

The thing about Lost is that I can at least justify the viewing because it had some original ideas - It had soap-opera type drama at points and the dialogue isn't much to write home about, but the universe they created was something completely new. But hey that's just my reason for liking it.

With 24 there just isn't much to take from it that's original or intelligent, I place it next to shows like Heroes (X-men gone retarded), Smallville (The shittiest thing on this Earth) and Supernatural (The light entertainment value wore off after a couple of seasons).

You have to appreciate that 24 is different from all of the shows you are comparing it with, it's set over 1 day. An hour an episode, that limits you a hell of a lot. Bearing that in mind, they've done a brilliant job keeping it going for 8 seasons.

This is another thing that pisses me off... 8 seasons?? 8 fecking seasons?!?! You make a good point, the shows concept limits itself... but unfortunately the shows creators don't seem to think so.

How a show with infinite character depth like The Wire can span 5 seasons and 24 is on it's 8th is insane. Nevermind the fact that the seasons are smaller.

Funnily enough it's always the 10-15 episode per season format that the best shows use. Quality over quantity. I lose a lot of respect for shows that go for ratings and lengthy seasons rather than knowing when to call it quits.

For example; House is borderline for me, I feel as if it's about to start stagnating, luckily the excellent writing has kept the quality... but the concept and formula can only last so long.

Well again, 24 is 24, it's done over a single day. You can't chop and change the amount of episodes in a season, it has to be 24 or it doesn't quite work!

I'm looking forward to the movie, as it will give them a lot more leeway with what they can do.

I enjoyed 24 up to season 5, I gave up about half way through 6 as I started to get bored with it, but I'd pretty much chained 3 seasons so that may be partly my own fault. I've not watched Lost, it just looks utterly garbage.

The Sopranos and West Wing are both absolutely miles better than 24 though and I'm planning to watch The Wire next which I have very high hopes for.

 I suggest you actually watch it and determine whether or not its garbage. A lot of people may not agree with the amount of questions it leaves but its one of the finest pieces of television you will find.

The Wire is #1 because the writing and character development, not too mention the whole progression through the seasons is just all on point.

24 is my personal favourite but that's because I love action/suspense/thriller sort of shows and of course Jack Bauer = #1 TV Character.

LOST will be remembered for the hype it generated and certainly not as one of the finest pieces of television. Pointless storylines and ridiculous amount of deus ex machina is going to hit people hard in the face when they watch it on the DVDs.
