Loic Remy

Wenger possibly passed on him because of his wage demands.

I can't see Liverpool - or anyone, paying over the odds for him to be honest.

Arsenal pay decent, if not massive money and at that fee, you might be prepared to spend a bit more in wages.

Not a top class player evidently but a proven PL goalscorer usually would cost more. Arsenal needed a forward last year to take the pressure of Giroud but, as said above, maybe they have eyes on a bigger name.

Remy and Lambert are squad signings. At 12m,we'd probably have signed them if Suarez had stayed.

We haven't signed our first team replacement for Suarez yet. Our final attacker is not going to be any sort of 4th choice player. It's the 1st choice we're waiting on.

Like who?

A very good signing, in my opinion. Made even better by the reported £14 million for Borini.

Yep. Sell Borini. Sign Remy. Have £6m left to play with. One of the best pieces of business in the transfer window thus far.

Like who?

Who knows. Don't think it will be an out and out striker. A creative type, maybe even a midfielder. Shaqiri/Reus/Isco/di Maria have all come up. Might be someone else entirely. Lot will depend on who in that price category is gettable. Sanchez got away. I'm sure a fair few of them will prove elusive. Such players often are.

He's reportedly signing for £60k pw on a 5 year deal so it isn't really excessive.

Now Bascombe is saying 90.
He was on £80K at QPR and wanted an uplift. Not worth paying him more than Giroud & co.

Could be a v good signing, unfortunately.

It's a good question up above whether they will sign a real big name that might cheese Studge off (this could also be someone who has a better tea-pot impersonation too, obv)

Pleasing business over the past day or so. Getting Sunderland to hand over £14m for Borini is outstanding work. Remy is a good striker who will bag goals. Great price as well.

9 million for him isn't bad at all IMO. Obviously not in the same class as Suarez and not a game changer in terms of winning the title, but I think he'll get you 10+ goals a season without always being first pick.

Much better than Lambert.

If he's on 90K/week they're going to have to sort out Sterling, Sturridge and co. The effective transfer fee is £16m.

He's been good in two rubbish teams. Will be interesting if he can be a great player at a good team or if he's a big fish in a small pond type player.

He was good for Marseille - 27 goals in 51 league starts in his first two seasons for them is very similar to his record at Newcastle. He moved to Marseille just after they won the league and they finished 2nd in his first season.

Bascombe is useless. Bitter and untrustworthy since he left the echo.

It may be that he is on those wages but bascombe wouldn't know it.

At the moment they're signing players in similar positions and most these new signings will makes less than 20 appearances each, except maybe Markovic. They're adding depth, which they need since they're in the CL now. But they haven't improved on their starting xi at all with this signing or really any of their signings, again with the exception of Markovic and maybe Lallana. They critically need defenders and the Borini money would have gone a long way to solving that.

An absolute bargain for 8.5 million. Good signing for them... Not sure if he's a fair replacement for Suarez but he'll surely bang 15-20 goals a season for them. If I were them, I'd be hoping for a marquee signing like Cavani or Balotelli though.

Like someone else said, they already have Lambert as their back up striker so its an unusual signing unless they plan for Remy to be Suarez's replacement which if that is the case then I'd be worried if I was a Liverpool fan.

If Liverpool can secure some good defenders this transfer window they've done really well.

He's a player with pace who can play wide or through the middle. and as they are now in the CL, and as a result playing midweek and at the weekend it's clear why they think he's a decent buy.

Modern football is not about the first XI - it's about a squad, especially if you might have 50+ games a season.

They were lucky with injuries last year, as well as no Europe and earlyish cup exits, the result being a good campaign. They're evidently looking to prepare for a lot more games.

Someone made the point that Sturridge will now be expecting to be first choice. This is a potential problem if Brendan signs a direct competitor for number 1 striker. <--- Esp so if Brendan gets fixated on fielding just the 1 striker (his favoured 4-2-3-1). (That's a bit better English than my first effort I think).

The clever thing about signing Remy is that he can do both jobs, play 'up top' himself, or as 1 of the 3, and I don't see Remy as a direct threat to the ego of the Teapot-man.

I don't see a 'marquee' forward being signed meself, but as BR will probably want to occasionally play a pair of strikers, another (shrewd) signing in the Lambert/Remy mould is most likely.

Now they need a couple of defenders. (Refs must see what Skrtl gets up to sooner or later, surely.)

After Suarez, i'd be amazed if they touch another cnut like Balotelli, bringing yet more shame onto the club. That said he'd fit in really well there.

Hopefully nothing career ending.

Reckon Remy for 8.5 million would've been good business.

This whole media storm may as well end his career. Everybody now talking about Remy's problem that he's dealing with in a proper way as he's a quite solid footballer.

I wonder who will want to sign a contract with him after such a twist of events and huge public exposure.

Hopefully he may be able to safely continue his football career.

I guess he has to be satisfied that continuing his career doesn't risk his life. He'll probably continue at QPR now,

His heart probably isn't that bad. It's just that Liverpool think that playing for them is just that so much more overwhelming.

Sky are now spreading rumours that the deal didn't collapse based on a medical but they couldn't agree personal terms, and also mentioned the deal being dependent on Borini going to Sunderland.

Don't believe that myself, why would they fly him all the way to Boston when they knew Borini didn't want to move.

its a cover up by Liverpool....its a bit of bad form to suggest a player is 'medically unfit' after agreeing personal terms and passing the first one

He was supposed to be close to Arsenal until the deal collapsed over 'a failure to agree terms'.

So you have sources at the club then?

Apparently he was going to be given the number 7 shirt.
