Liverpool - 2017/18

They’ll have one of their common 2-steps back next season after tonight. Literally couldn’t have gone any worse.

Nah, they are buying too much quality these days for that. I'd have Keita and Fekir here in a heartbeat. Proper defensive midfielder as well and they might be a unit.

Fair play to @Tommy for posting.

We shall see who appears from our other resident scouse!

My Chinese got me over it  Satay Pork

I'd like to think the same. Another body in midfield & a better keeper & I think we'll have had a good summer.

I feel for Karius as a person. This could be scarring for years from here. Don't see how Karius the player comes back from this though. It is a really big ask for the dressing room to ask them to move past this. He basically lost it single-handedly.

In a way, it's easier to deal with a defeat of this kind. The team scrapped to stay in the game well despite losing our best player. No one else you can really point the finger at. Our back four was excellent. It's rare really that you can look at a player and say without any bias that it's straight up all his fault.

I'm gutted obviously,, but oddly calm about it as well.

Agreed. I also feel really bad for Salah (obviously) & Carvajal. I hope they can both make it back for the WC, but from what I've heard, Salah making it back is unlikely.

I'm proud of the team. Our defence was great, like seriously, where did we get these full backs from? A few years back we had Aly Cissoko ffs

That goal from Bale deserves to win any match. Honestly though, I'd like to think we'll be back.

Edit: Also, huge respect to Karius for apologising after. At least he didn't let go of the balls needed to apologise.

Robertson was a class apart. He handled practically everything Real threw at him and he was largely the reason for Ronaldo 'not showing up"

Karius was borderline suspicious in his performance. The way he attempted to roll the ball out, with Bale 2 yards away and in full view, was highly suspect. You could have forgiven such a shocking lapse in concentration had he not compounded the earlier mistake but fumbling Bale's second in to the net.

I'm not suggesting foul play (okay maybe I am a little!) but surely questions will be asked of his performance. Ignoring such a dodgy performance only serves to fuel match-fixing further.

Yeah I’m kind of the same. I can accept losing to a side like Madrid as well. There’s a lot of class in that side. Kroos and Modric are fantastic players.

I hope Karius does come back from this. He’s a young guy and needs support right now. Must be a crappy thing to go through.

Lost to the better team in the end, albeit not in the way I would have ever imagined!

Overall it's still been a good season regardless as the continued progression of the team is clear. Tonight shows there is still a long way to go to be able to compete with the top European teams though.

Klopp knows the clear weakness is that the midfield, despite the admirable job they've done, isn't good enough for the highest level. Keita and Fekir if it happens will hopefully help with this.

The improvement in the back 4 is clear despite what some people on here still think. As for Karius I'd still be inclined to keep him as number 1 as he's played well since getting the spot in January. Just unfortunate he's had a mare on the biggest club stage of them all.

Looking forward to next season.

It’s weird to say considering we conceded three goals, but I thought our back four was relatively good. Alexander-Arnold never looked under too much pressure.

I think midfield is where Madrid’s superiority was obvious. The effort was admirable but against sides like Madrid you need a bit of class in there to match them. Fekir and Keita would be a good start I suppose.

I think we played well overall. Our back four was solid throughout the night, with both full-backs playing superbly (Robertson is probably my MOTM). Midfield was competitive for large portions of the game, but we didn't look like the same team when Salah went off.

Karius...

Klopp couldn't have done much more. You look at Zidane, he brings on Bale, he changes the game - We don't have those options, and that's what we need in the summer. We need players that can come off the bench & make a difference, or push one of our current players to the bench so they can some on and make the difference.

Still, I'm proud of the team, I hope Salah & Carvajal can both recover for the world cup, and I hope Karius goes back to being a Sons of Anarchy stunt double.

Good season.

Well said, we lost but I am not in the slightest bit unhappy. To get to the final was a hell of an achievement, considering the squad we have, the football we have played has been brilliant and bar the mistakes from Karius, we were very much on the same level as Madrid. Our luck ran out, simple as that, to lose Salah so early and then to concede the goals we did, you have to say, it really wasnt our night!

Proud of the team and the fans and what keeps me in high spirits is knowing we will only get better. This experience will be huge for our lads and with a few additions to the team, it wont be our last final.

Almost have to feel for Liverpool this evening, best player injured early and possibly out of the world cup, Karius errors and THAT goal. But I say....ALMOST. Have been a big fan of Klopp from watching a documentary on him when he was at Dortmund, was my ideal choice to be the next United manager and gutted he took over Liverpool and in his third season he almost has the team he wants.

By far his best season he has strengthened well in areas needed at left back, centre back, right wing and also midfield after losing Coutinho. Great purchases and now producing entertaining football with Arnold and Gomez lookign like two very good youngsters....however he did make a mistake showign such faith in Karius, has cost them all season and certainly this evening. You have Keita coming and no doubt other signings, Fekir looked a real talent before his injury, not really seen him this season.

He has done a great job over three years which is now coming to fruition in terms of results and playing entertaining football. BUT, people have been over hyping the club a tad due to Salahs season and there champions league exploits and victories over City. You still finished behind us in the league....and we are not very good at the moment. You also must be the only team to reach a champions league final without playing any of the four teams that have dominated it for the last decade (Madrid, Bayern, Juventus and Barcelona). You can only beat what is in front of you but lets be honest, none of the teams bar City were very good on your journey, Not jealous or knocking the side as they did perform very well and are a pretty talented first eleven performing as a unit (still a couple of player short in the first eleven and not a deep squad).

Certainyl be an interestign summer. I thought the English sides were still a little short bar City in Europe, but getting closer and that we are close to seeing English sides dominate again, turned out that way but the high pressing football yourself, SPurs and City are playing as well as a slight decline in some on the elite European sides I feel (regardless of the results) I think a good transfer window for this years top four could see a big champions league for the premiership next year......we are the furthest off sadly at the moment which I hope is addressed this window!

Will challenge for the title next season I reckon. Not saying they'll win it as City could easily motor away in final weeks and win by 8-10 points.

Signing VVD in January settled down their defence nicely and aside from a poor first half at Old Trafford they were pretty comfortably defensively from what I saw second half of the season.

Think Naby Keita will be a good signing for them aswell, he fits their style.

Obviously need to keep hold of Salah and add a bit more depth in other areas.

Nah they are still a mile off.

Not sure how you have formed that assessment having just seen Madrid outplay them with ease.

Comfortable defensively? They still dropped a tonne of points and scraped top 4.

The whole Liverpool myth needs to stop!

I reckon they’ll be up there next season unfortunately. But I’ll be enjoying tonight’s result until then

Klopp said: “If I sit here in four years, I am pretty confident we will have one title.”

If not, he will have failed his target. I wonder if it’s the target he promised to the owners?

You’re saying that as though Madrid are rubbish. How can you form an assessment based on one game?

We only finished six points behind United. Do you think you’ll challenge for the title next season?

Real Madrid level teams weren't in premier league this season apart from the one that finished first.

Depends on transfer dealings but think Liverpool are in as good a shape as Man. United or Chelsea to launch a title bid next season. Spurs will be Spurs and Arsenal way out of it atm.

You're right Liverpool let in soft goals but that was more a problem first half of the season. After xmas they kept many clean sheets in the league and worst defensive game was Rashford testimonial.

Of course this requires Man. City dropping their level a fair bit. Just like a golfer if they shoot 95 points + no one is catching them.

No I say it based on your whole season. You got quite lucky in the CL until the final and it's made things look much better than they actually are.

What do united have to do with it?

4 years the World has known lovern is crap but then he starts him in a final

For 2 years the world has known your keepers are shit and he done nothing

He is not cutthroat enough to be a top manager

Look forward to them and their bum rush press failing next year as well.

Got to say hats off to them for getting to the final, but they are still poo. I don't see where everyone is coming from when they say they will challenge next season.

Alls Klopp is bothered about is adding players to score goals when he needs players to defend goals. Fair enough he overpaid for VVD but what is he supposed to do when he practically has an open net behind him.

The guy has got to be on crack, there are plenty of decent keepers out there and he starts that clown in the net in a champions league final.

And what is he going to do when they lose salah (because lets be honest it's gonna happen)

Quote me on this next year, they will drop back to 7th-8th and win nothing yet again.

For 2 years the world has known your keepers are shit and he done nothing

How did De Gea start off his United career? Wasnt a world beater was he? Every player needs time, although Mignolet, words fail me here....

We didn’t have a great start to the season but we’ve improved compared to last year. We’re better defensively and have finished with only one point less despite having European football added on. Madrid got a fair bit of luck on their way to the final as well but both teams deserved to be there based on their performance in the competition this year though.

Do you think things are terrible at Liverpool? Other than the disappointment of not winning anything yet, I don’t think we’re in a terrible position.

I’d find it strange of you thought United were much closer to challenging City than we are based on what I’ve seen from both sides this season. That’s why I asked if you think United can challenge next season.

Well the league table and results between the top 6 suggest United are closer to the title than Liverpool. That's facts and figures, not opinion. I expect United will improve again too.

I don't think things are terrible at Liverpool but they certainly aren't as great as some of you lot are making out. Klopp has failed to win anything in three years and the nearest you've been to the PL is under Brendan Rodgers.

LoL what a crock

Improved but have one point less than last season
Improved because you lost one final instead of two

Mark my words you won’t win anything with Klopp

He is not cutthroat enough and has flawed tactics

Also if city perform as they did this season again or 95% of the way there no one else will challenge them again

Their team is so bad in various positions. Mane, Salah and Firmino are a joy to watch though. Mane especially looked good tonight. To think all the experts on here were fuming when we made a bid for him.

We’ll find out next season. I think United, Liverpool and Spurs are at a crossroads.

Liverpool will be fine. We just lost the biggest final in the world with a depleted squad(Salah injury and no quality subs) and a shit goalkeeper in a match which we were in contril. Next season we have NK coming in and I’m sure another keeper at least. Were fine.

We’ll spend £300m without thinking about it, and despite being poor and Liverpool having their best season in years, finished above you.

Would be very surprised if you scored anywhere near as much next season.

Liverpool will drop out the top 4 unless Salah can have another 40+ goal season.

You just lost the biggest final in the world comfortably. You also scraped top 4.

You'll do okay but will never set the world alight. Par season for you again. Three years without a trophy for Klopp.
