Lisandro Martinez | Signs for United

Yeah, the fact our scouts currently arent doing transfers is really a huge problem for some.
You’ve got me wondering how many of our signings since SAF left have been scout-driven.

I bet it’s only a few. And I wouldn’t count ones where the scouts have been leaned on by the player’s agent.

He was and the consensus amongst their fanbase seems to be he's clearly their best defender over Timber despite many feeling the latter has a high ceiling.
He is better than Timber at the moment, but Timber has a higher potential. And us Ajax fans will always love all of our players, but ajax grown players will always have a small preference over bought players. At ajax we are aware that we are not the end station of our player (sadly) but homegrown players. They are the children of the club. Bit we are still gutted that martinez is going to Man Utd, but at the same time we are happy for him. He gace his all to us, now he will give his all to ManUtd. And Most ajax supporters have a soft spot for Man Utd

Very exciting signing. Could go wrong of course but I can't see how we could want him this much and not start him so it's interesting to see if it means a back 3

Why would it? We've been training with a 4, and ETH historically prefers a 4.

Because he's named Maguire as Captain and would be a very bold move to drop our best Defender when fit. Unless he's counting on Varane being injured again

I'd rather move on Jones, Tuanzebe, AWB and Telles before trying to shift Bailly. I know he's made of glass but he's a more talented backup than any of those 4.
Totally agree and I’m sure he can also play RB like Victor Lindelof or push cones to shove both can play CDM

Indeed, i really don't want him to leave. But for that money you kinda have to do it. Luckily Timber is renewing his contract, so at least 1 player stays

I’m pretty certain he’ll prefer Maguire to Varane based on the fact that he’s much better on the ball. Aware most won’t agree though and I suppose I can see why.

I don't find this particularly compelling. Waiting for Martinez to come in to deploy a back 3 in training doesn't make that much sense. You'd want to start drilling the players immediately in your primary shape. I doubt he's basing all his ideas around Maguire's happiness and Varane is not good for a full season. There are going to be enough games for all of these players.

Can't wait for us to spend another £40m on a CB next summer

This is why you need a compentant director of football / compentant recruitment team to build a first XI + squad, and ultimately a compentant board to hire the right people in the top positions to implement that. Real have a great DM in Casemiro and theyve already signed his replacement in Tchoumanei.

We go round and round in circles signing poorly scouted players or players we don't need because of the whims of the new manager. The fact we're only looking at players that have played under ETH in a poor Dutch league should be a huge red flag, but alas this is the new United.

Camavinga isn’t a DM. Tchouameni isn’t his replacement.

Martinez by definition can’t possibly be poorly scouted we have someone who has literally spent years working with him.

Malacia our first and only signing so far has never played under ten Hag.

It’s honestly impressive that you got so much so wrong in such a small space.

Real Madrid sign Camavinga, then a year later sign "his replacement in Tchouameni".

United sign Martinez, yet you "can't wait for us to spend another £40m on a CB next summer".

Moaning for the sake of it. Pathetic.

Last time Bailly played at RB was a CL game where he had to feign an injury 30 minutes in and be subbed off because he looked like Bambi on ice and was getting murdered.
One of the worst performances I've ever seen from a Manchester United player.

After all the discussions about who he replaces between Maguire and Varane, unless he is played in midfield, won't be surprised to see him be the one that ends up on the bench.

We have signed some duds over the years, from various leagues and for their former managers, it amuses me to see many believe that all our signings are suddenly going to be very good ones.

Even if Ten Hag is going to come with plenty of improvement in player performance, then Maguire and Varane are very much going to be a part of that improvement. Will Martinez in a new league perform better than them at their best?

ETH can very easily get it wrong and Martinez flop.

I really can’t imagine our scouting team around this globe making a shortlist and thinking yeah this short CB from Ajax who is very very unproven is the best option at a bargain price of 50m pounds. All that in the same window where Chelsea go and get one of the best CBs in the world for 20m euros less.

And all that while we have Fred and McT starting.

His name is Elko Born, reliable or not? He said for the money United are offering Ajax fans in general are happy with the sale.
Never heard of him. Just a fan podcast I guess. Someone acting like his opinion is general opinion.

But yes, for this kind of money Ajax fans can't really feel mugged off. Some still feel that way though, but those have no sense of reality. Nevertheless, a lot of fans also don't care about the money and would rather have kept the player.

A somewhat strange signing considering the price. Hopefully he gets straight into the team and is miles better than what we have.

We do sign a lot of CB's though

2022 - Martinez
2021 - Varane
2019 - Maguire
2017 - Lindelof
2016 - Bailly
2014 - Blind/Rojo

It's not against the realms of possibility that this time next year we're looking to sign yet another one depending on Maguire's form and Varane's fitness (we've already tried for Timber this summer)

But what is the point of whinging about it? We have a new manager. He would like a left footed centre back who is good on the ball and is proactive in style rather than passive. Whatever happened before is irrelevant. At the same time the poster praises Real Madrid's foresight in signing 19 year old Camavinga's replacement.

Clearly we're all still in a state of shock that United spent 80 MILLION on a CB who at best is described as above average. I'm in a state of shock over that as well. But what was even more shocking was our poor CB play last season, both Maguire and Varane to be fair. And Lindelof was no brilliant third option either. It would make no sense to not bring in a CB who gives us hope for improved performances in central defense. And if it turns out that Martinez pushes Maguire to a new level of footballing genius, the funds would have been well spent.

He‘ll be critical to ten Hag’s system of playing out from the back. I’ve no doubt that’s why he’s been chasing him so intently. Whether he adapts to the PL is a whole other matter.

Plenty of teams have failed with having DOF at the helm. Just add layers to management. Need to have complete accord and rapport with the coach. Man City played a blinder when appointing the successful Barca group.

This season it seems the scouting has been done by EtH. Basically, he's acted as a DOF and a coach.

Just read its official, 55 plus bonusses. Congrats on having him, he is a class player. Besides his height no weaknesses. For a central defender he can really play football, tackle, defend high and comfortable on the ball. I dont think ive ever seen him play a weak game. If he is good for the premier league we will see. I never thought too much of Donny vd Beek, but Martinez is something else. Its too bad Ajax cant keep their players. This one will be missed
Insightful. Thanks for the post.

What's going to be the plan with him?

Holding midfielder?

A resignation that Varane is going to be injured every other game?

I assume Maguire retaining the captaincy is an indication that he's in ETH's plans.
