Bailly hasn't had a single season with us where he hasn't picked up at least two lengthy injuries. I love the guy but he's crocked.

Yeah, he has some amazing games where he just seems to be a brick wall and throws himself at everything. Then he's always injured and he's also inconsistent..

the thread title  amazing.

really curious about this one. Signing a small CB like him is certainly a risk, but I fully trust the Hagmeister on this one.

He's definitely not cheap, in fact going by the fees mentioned by the Dutch press he is going to be significantly more expensive than Van de Beek, who wasn't exactly a smart bargain or a cheap punt to start with.

This obviously tells a lot about our inability as a club to conduct smart and good value transfers. Was personally hoping we'd simply stop overpaying for all players except for truly exceptional talents in this new Ten Hag era, but I guess the pressure was on and we needed to sign someone. I guess we got a fair deal with Malacia so that's something of a new start.

Positive is we at least get a solid hungry player who's very familiar with our manager's tactics, this deal might not be good value for money but at least there's some purpose or idea behind it, unlike the summer when we bought Fred for a very high fee, while our then manager didn't even seem to specifcally want to add him to the squad.

Plenty of players have over come worse injuries than his double leg break and returned to play. It's not an excuse anymore. You also can't blame Shaw for Maguire's positioning being exposed, you could blame him for not staying with the line and playing people onside as he did several times last year.

He's just not driven enough to be as good as he should be consistently. He's just another player who shows up when he wants to or thinks he has a point to prove. Like when Telles came in, it shouldn't take that to light a fire in him.

I personally hope Malacia comes in shows him up for what he is and puts him in his rightful place, on the bench or better still out the door.
well we will come back to this Xmas time when Shaw will be being called Shawberto again, no doubt you hoped the same over Teles. i admit I’m a little bias as I have a brother who is a youth coach at Southampton, he did say something similar about his drive although he also said Poch could get him to walk through walls, and he raved about him in the same way as Gareth Bale who played left back for Southampton as well saying Shaw could run a game from left back, we have seen more than glimpses from him I think his best years are ahead of him and eventually he’ll be a left sided CB or a LCB in a back 3 plus I thi k
He needs a Top Level attacking coach that pushes him to his limits.

It’s funny the difference a couple of weeks can make isn’t it? Arsenal fans have went from creaming their pants over Martinez to saying we’ve been robbed and he’s another flop. Wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact they’ve just been snubbed and left in the mud now would it?

Who has said this?

Oh no, someone got something wrong.

Pray tell how we can always be right like you oh wise one?

Pretty sure I could go through your ridiculous amount of comments here and find a mountain of comments where you've been categorically wrong, But I've better things to do with my time.
It was obvious from the beginning that you were talking complete shite.

Agree when he's on his game he's great but inconsistent with injuries and he can be Rash at times but loved his run the other day. Needs to be sold I think .

Or not, maybe folks should just not post like children?

Poster gets transfer wrong, wow! Ground breaking stuff. Crazy.
The poster you're originally talking to is a bit of an arse, but you said some dumb shit that's rightly getting called out now tbh.

Not really, wrong on the transfer and I don't mind.

We've over paid here cause of the drama with FDJ, Ajax could demand more after selling Haller & Gravenberch.

Remains to be seen of course how this lad does for us, if he doesn't live up to the price tag you can rest assured the same lads mocking me will run to Martinez thread to slaughter him soon enough.

Why are people saying it's a lot??

Firstly, it's in Euros so about 46m in Sterling, and secondly it's total. That's a good deal in my eyes
Aye he's cheaper than Ben White, younger too and is an established Argentine international coming ovee from a historic club. I'd say it's fair in this market tbh

The high price comes from the fact that he is a key player for Ajax, young and he also needs to be replaced. Ajax can't sell him cheap and then suffer with no replacements. This season we did not have a cheaper choice as our scouting dept was restructured, so ETH gave his own recommendations. Its about time we realize that price tag has nothing to do with player's talent.

Regarding Martinez, I am confident he will succeed as he has a strong mental attitude and is a very calm and intelligent player in reading the game and has got very good attributes in terms of tackling, passing and holding up the ball. Based on those attributes, he can be used in different positions depending on how ETH assesses the opponent. Same for Malacia and De Jong.

Regarding your comment on the "slaughter" fanatics, i feel that the Mods should really take a look at some of the posters who are only interested in hurling insults at the players, the manager or the club as a whole. Its like they hate to see positives. They bring no contributions to his forum whatsoever.

Imagine us paying £46M for Martinez and he gets exposed then we sell E Bailey for £12.5M to one of the big Italian sides and he becomes a superstar and £76M value at the end of the season. I’m saying now Bailey is more an ETH type player than any other of defenders except R Varane, he likes aggressive front footed defenders. We have 60 games to play we should be looking for an attacking RB, A young sweeper Keeper to deputise or Sergio Romero who knows the club, a deep lying playmaker , Aggressive CFW and left footed Right wing to go with Martinez, Malacia and Eriksen

Murtourgh and Arnold have 3/4 weeks to get this right. We need to sell Telles, A Pereira, AWB, Axel Tuanzebe, Ronaldo( He wants to Go) P Jones , T Chong. We might get £60M if we hang out for £20M for Ronaldo

Then go buy the following, ;
GK - S Romero - Free
RB - Dumfries 3
CM - Y Tielemans 30M
RW - Antony 60M
CF - Belotti Free

Thats 120M spend added to the 60M for Malacia, zMartinez and Ericsen or £120M Net and we’ve strengthened the squad. we will need to spend £50M in January for Patrik Shick and £70M next year for FDJ

Bailly is aggressive, and also good with the ball at his feet, is relatively press resistant, etc. But for me he lacks other skills necessary. I am by no means an expert in ETH football but I have done my best to study it since we signed him. To me it seems critical that the players can change positions to solve certain situations. Bailly has never been very good at positioning or decision making imo. The players around him don't know what he will do next. When he is good it is often because of an individual good performance, not becasue he works in perfect harmony with the rest of the team. This could of course be changed under ETH, but this is how I look at it atm.

Nothing to do with transfer, you went on a rant in multiple threads saying how Arsenal are better place to be and used Martinez as some sort of conclusive proof that Arsenal are in better position than us to attract players. Now the reports that Martinez rejected Arsenal to sign for ManUtd.

It's nothing to do with guessing whether a transfer will happen or a player will be success.

Does this guy play as right back? if not I dont get it. We broke the world record for Maguire, with then paired him with a world class defender last summer. Their back up are Lindelof Bailly, and then Tuanzebe Jones. Why are we in for a centre back again this summer instead of a right back?

This thread isn't anywhere near as fun as it should be. :(

Poor guy is being welcomed with a deluge of misery!

A lot of faith being placed in Ten Hag if we spent 55M on our 7th senior center back. Hope there are some departures now starting with Jones, Bailly and Axel.

£42m is a bit high but the market is crazy, and he still had several years in his contract.

Are you serious? Maguire paired with a frequently injured Varane backed up by Lindelof and three lads who can't stay fit and are on the transfer list by all accounts. No I've no idea why we'd bring in a CB.

I fully support buying ETH's target. They know how he wants to play. If we sign FDJ and Martinez, we could surprise many finishing top 4. Ajax has been buying good young players on low transfer fee. I am 100% sure that in year 3 onwards, ETH will be signing young talents that we have never heard about but next 4 transfer windows, we need established players who can adapt to his philosophy.

Nothing to be salty about, he chose his ex coach and at that price I hope we invest in DM/CM instead of a new CB.

So it's something like £42m up front +£4m add ons?

Not great but then compared to £80m for Maguire and £50m for White it's a steal.

I don't think its as black and white as you suggest.

Had we moved earlier we could of likely got him a bit cheaper, probably in the ball park of 5-7m. It's by no means a huge amount but could mean the difference in another signing or not. Every reliable journalist had Arsenal paying £45m with some small add on's we've paid the extra £5m plus add ons.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the transfer. Happy to have him here for his versatility as much as anything, I think he could do well. Simply making the point that folks thinking its funny to tag another user cause the called something wrong is childish and silly, but if / when things go wrong with a signing they'd be the very ones to run to the thread to slate the player and most likely say he's a waste of a transfer fee.

And before you say otherwise, we've had over a decade of this very thing happening time and time again with countless transfers for various managers.

That's how a forum works though. An opinion you find horrible and can't agree with or feel brings nothing to the thread could well be strongly agreed with by others.

I know my opinions won't always be agreed with and that's to be expected. I'm not bothered if I get things right or wrong like some here, this generation likes to pass themselves off as ITK types, doesn't matter if its here, facebook, twitter or reddit.
