Lisandro Martinez | Man Utd player - Contract till 2027, with the option to extend for a further year

Some myth busting. As I said in his transfer thread, if you actually watched the game you’d know Haaland could’ve had a hattrick on another day.

Some myth busting. I was watching the frigging match in the feckin stadium and (apart from the fact Martinez isn’t a fault in at least two of those clips) Martinez dominated Haaland and Ajax totally murdered Dortmund that night.

It was Timber who struggled with Haaland, less so Martinez.

Also, playing against Haaland with such a high line, even van Dijk, Dias and whoever would struggle.

Haaland bullied van Dijk and de Ligt when the Netherlands played Norway.

We cant get this over the line, yet Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Forest and Liverpool have all done their business. Embarrassing.

Haaland did not get those opportunities because he played some “world class only be can do this” type of skill, but because he is physically much superior compared to midget CBs Timber and Martinez.

Don’t be naive you can bet even that shit stick Mateta from Crystal Palace can cause him similar problems, never mind players like Kane and Haaland.

And how foolish is that notion, “yes but it’s Haaland or Kane”. Well no shit Sherlock but that’s our direct competition. For the Southampton strikers we didn’t need to buy a 60m CB did we?

Oh but then how do you explain Havertz vs Maguire in the England / Germany game....

Are you saying Martinez doesn’t win enough duels?

I know, the stats right?

Let’s wait and see now. After my initial disappointment of how much we paid I accept that he is our player and I hope I get proven wrong, he adapts and is actual upgrade on what we have.

He will be a transformative player for us imo. There will be times when he will miss headers and the media will kill him for that, but for the all round play he will be both a pitbull in defense and a playmaker from the back.

I thought we were looking for an upgrade of Maguire?

Surely not on physicality...

Besides based on Ten Hags comments it seems it will be Martinez and Maguire who will start.
My post was meant to highlight that physicality isnt all that matters. And when even Maguire can get bodied by someone as skinny as Havertz then we shouldnt be too concerned if Martinez lost a physical duel with a beast like Haaland.

Havertz is 190cm and pretty capable physically.

Of course physicality is not all that matters, but is one of them. If we were going to buy a new CB I was expecting we go and get the full package, the least worrying should have been the candidates physical attributes. What we have done is the opposite imo. In addition to his relative inexperience outside a very weak European league there will always be question marks about his physical attributes, until he gets going and proves otherwise.

Havertz is tall but was never strong. The reason he is capable is because he is very smart and uses his body really well. Martinez is much the same from what I have seen of him. Being big and strong isnt enough if you are slow or not agile.

Would I have liked us to go for someone like DeLigt? Absolutely. Was it realistic? I doubt it.

As I said I felt we needed the full package. Liverpool got Konate last summer and he is doing great, his physical attributes were a big help in adapting to the league.

Yes De Ligt obviously wanted Bayern. There were other options out there however.

Lets he how he'll fare fist.

Seeing a lot of posts suggesting he’ll play CDM. I think there’s going to be disappointment amongst some here when he barely if ever starts in CDM.

I also don’t think we’ll play a back 5 at all this season unless it’s necessary due to injuries.

Quite excited to see this guy play. We're lining ourselves up to attract all kinds of jokes/criticism when he doesn't win a header resulting in a goal, which will happen at some stage as it does to every defender, but it will be tough to live them down with Martinez. I can see him becoming one of those players that opposition fans refuse to acknowledge is good even if he is.

But some of his on the ball stats are pretty ridiculous and it will be interesting to see how his front foot defending works out. I don't see this being a "whatever" signing. It's going to be an experience.

Compare Ruben Dias to VVD. Last season Dias was in the bottom 28th percentile among CBs in Europe's big 5 leagues for percentage of aerial duels won, while VVD was in the 94th percentile. That gap amounts to VVD winning an extra 17.5% of his aerial duels, which seems like a lot.

But the impact of that is limited by the relatively low number of aerial duels they face. If Dias had been as dominant as VVD it would have won him 0.58 of an aerial duel per game. Meanwhile if VVD had been as weak as Dias it would have cost him around 0.9 aerial duels per game.

The point being that even if we were to assume Martinez' height will make him weaker in those situations, the negative impact of that isn't seen in every duel he loses but rather the duels he loses that a dominant physical presence wouldn't also lose. And that number is heavily limited by the relatively low number of those situations CBs actually face in a game. So much so that the massive gap in aerial dominance between Dias and VVD last season didn't even amount to a full duel won/lost per game.

Losing a duel is not a major problem as long as his defensive partners, and midfield players sometimes, assume he will lose the contest, and they position themselves accordingly. From what I have noticed on several occasions, is that both Maguire and Lindelof seem to switch of when one or the other is challenging for the ball on occasion.

How long will this take? Is it just his visa we’re waiting on?
