Apparently the Romero - Martinez era is set to start tonight for Argentina. Finally the Otamendi era has come to an end.

in my opinion it has to be top 3 CB pairing in the world.

What a pleasure it is to watch this guy play. He’s crazy good. Romero is also amazing. It has to be the best ball playing CBs pair in the world. It’s impossible to press them.
Lisandro is the best on the pitch until now at HT. But Romero made a ridiculous play to asssist Di María.

What's the general consensus about him with fans in Argentina and the media there?

That he should be the started ahead of Otamendi. And that Argentina has the best CB pair in the whole world.
Literally there’s no point pressing both.

Licha made a few mistakes in second half though.

Got through a full 90 mins for Argentina which is a good sign

It’s extremely rare that you are excited to watch a centre half play. That said, he’s one of the most watchable defenders I can recall for many a year, and in a team of a lot of industry and functionality, I’d say he is, along with Mainoo, up there as our most watchable players.

Completely agree. On top form he’s a joy to watch. So aggressive in the challenge but in a controlled manor. Add to that he’s brilliant in possession with his line breaking passes. One of the few players we have that I think would easily slot into just about any team in world football. Just hope we get an injury free season next year.

Mmm not really, Ota is a very strong personality in this team and I don't think that he'll loose his place if he is healthy. Credit when its due he had a great Copa and WC, the staff might think they own him that.
This game was pretty much an exercise with many players that does not belong right now to the first team and some formation testing.

Nonetheless, Ota is Ota and he always gives that sensation that he can be great and all of a sudden his personality betrays him and he makes sthg insane or rushed.
Indeed the majority of fans would like a Cuti and Licha that also are very agressive, with a risky ball game, but at the same time more "calm" with the ball (sometimes even too much, they know they are very skill and in ocasions they go over the top with it).
I'll love these two for the next 8 years to say at least, yet they also have faced very annoying out of the blue injuries.
They make me feel secure even after committing a mistake, mostly they have tons of confidence in themselves and I love how they help to break very defensive rivals. Also they can help the new lads (hopefully Anselmino and such) having a great refference.

Impressive stat especially considering he’s a CB who is always looking for the forward pass if possible.

Plays the full 90 minutes, of course he did.

Watch him play 90 minutes every game all the way to the final and first game back at united comes of injured after 10 mins.

I’m sick of this kind of comments. My lord.

this is NOT the Varane thread. In fact, Varanes gone.

Apparently having a corker of a tournament so far.

I agree. Since coming to United, he has had 4 injuries - and 3 of them should be discounted.
  1. Metatarsal in the Sevilla game - an injury like that comes from an impact, not an inherent proneness to injuries.
  2. Metatarsal (part 2) - this was a reoccurrence injury of the same metatarsal, probably caused by the fact we didn't allow it to heal properly before we let him resume playing
  3. Knee strain - Coufal fell awkwardly on his knee - not his fault.
  4. Calf strain - sustained in training
So, in my opinion, only 1 of these 4 injuries (the calf strain) can be taken into account when assessing his injury proneness.

After Bruno, possibly the best United buy since Fergie retired. Probably on the same level in terms of impact. If only we get a decent player to compliment him in defense. The days of Rio & Vidic were great highs that could be reached if the defense is sorted and Onana plays decently and to his expected high levels next season.

If Martinez manages to stay fit with a good partner next to him, we can possibly look to challenge. A good defense will put less pressure on the forwards which will certainly NOT fire next season due to inexperience and players bedding in. A host of 1-0 wins will give a lot of confidence to the defense which in recent years has seen a lot of cricket scores.

Who would you want us to buy? For me we need two CBs. Our new starter against Martinez and the depth. Iceman should be gone and maguire is fine as backup honestly.. don’t see how Evans can be relied upon

so Martinez new starting cb
New signing and maguire

It's true, but let's be honest and when these type of situations happen, we all feel that the player in question might end having another injury and the player himself feels that he is to the very least on a bad streak.
For instance Romero had years without a single injury, suddenly he had one and he had a very very bad streak of injuries that affected his form. So far neither of the two are intrinsecally extremely injury prone, but man both have a very agressive style in their game, they put their bodies on the line time and again and when injuries start to appear more regularly, even if those are not connected, we all "feel" that sthg wrong might happen in the future too.

So far, I was wrong and Scaloni is using both for my pleasure and my peace of mind, not that Ota hasn't been nothing short of great these last years for the NT. But I trully wanted for Scaloni to start right now the transition while we have both on form.

Very happy for him to have started Argentina's 2 games at copa america. Please stay fit hes by far our most important defender

Won't probably play against Peru. I believe Otamendi will start.

But I believe after these matches it's clear Romero - Martinez is the starting CB pair.

Wanted us to sign Romero whenhe went to Spurs, think he is so under rated in our league cause of the aggresiveness getting him into trouble. Confess didnt know Martinez at all when we signed him but what a signing and what a pairing too

Happy for him, but was hoping they would go out so he would get a rest. Can't wait to see him play for us next season.

A rest?! He’s played like 2 matches in the last year, what he needs is matches.

Rehab is not necessarily a rest mate. But I get your point
Rehab can’t replace match fitness. It’s about getting back up to speed and getting into a rhythm.

I'm just scared of him getting injured again. Also prefer him back for pre-season even though it's probably not a rationale thought.

Really happy to finally see him start for Argentina and to see him doing well for them as well.

I can't believe what a bargain he has been for £57m relative to his ability. The most press-resistant centre back in the world. He's like Bernardo Silva at CB in that regard. One of the best ball progressors and build-up defenders around as well, and at last but not least, his mental profile and bare presence on the pitch gives both United and Argentina a totally different attitude IMO. Also, he's no slouch in the defensive aspects of his game, either. The FA Cup final was great proof of that.

If he manages to play at least 40 games next season, and we get top 4, he'll be widely regarded as a top 5-10 player in his position in the world.

Pep says top 5, if anyone respects his opinion

Good to see him play and build up some confidence (not that he lacks it) and momentum. Hopefully he can bring that into the team before the season starts.

When he is at his best and he steps into midfield he takes so much pressure of the sitting midfielder. Also his direct passes into the forwards were missed.

Hopefully he hits the ground running after these championships and sets the tone like he did in his first session here.

My biggest fear is another injury to this guy. Hoping he has more luck and our medical department takes care of him this season.

Pep talks so much nonsense in the media though. I wouldn't pay much attention. For instance, he once said that Maguire was fast in one of his press conferences. The reason I bring this up is because, in their All or Nothing documentary, during the halftime team talk in their game against Leicester, he clearly say to De Bruyne, "That guy isn't fast," while pointing toward Maguire. I would have certainly posted a clip of that if I was able to find it.

He talks 'so much' nonsense, followed by one piece of evidence which isn't even actually proven evidence anyway. How do you know it was about Maguire.
