I'm hoping he doesn't get noticed because unless we improve I can see Real and Barcelona come calling, and being a South American will be hard to keep him unless we're winning.

Can you imagine Martinez allowing himself to be carried off the pitch by Mark Noble?
Haunts me till this day that Herrera allowed that to happen but our players also watched it happen and didn't do anything. Could never happen now with Licha and Casemiro in the team.

I would like to go ahead and declare him the best defender of the league but haven't seen enough of saliba to say whether he's better or not.

We don't need another Martinez, we need someone who compliments him well and to be fair varane seems to do just that.

Obviously I don't mean specifically another 5ft 9 CB, but the qualities he has are remarkable. His reading of the game, his distribution and aggression are everything you'd want in a CB. Varane can't stay fit unfortunately and we need a long term solution, there's nothing wrong with having another player in Martinez's profile that can break through the lines. Martinez even when playing with a CB that "doesn't compliment him" still stands out which says a lot about him.

Never thought I'd witness a foreign player with the passion and qualities of Evra. We've found another!

Oh definitely, he's been a joy to watch this season and then to think he has yet to even hit his peak which usually comes later for centerbacks, if he gives us this level of quality for say 7 years we probably outright fleeced ajax on this one.

Shame about varane and I imagine we'd be looking for another cb option come summer .

He's everything that I wanted in Marcos Rojo, but he's 10 times better. He's not silly, keeps a cool head, doesn't let anyone get in his face and plays smart.

Basically the opposite to what Rojo became.

Yeah so Argentina is defo my team this world cup.

Needs to be in the conversation for club captain as well.

Got absolutely booted in the head by Scamacca and went in full power without batting an eyelid.

Martinez usually gives us a 7/10 performance but 2nd half of this game required more and he gave more.

He's one of our most important players for going forward to. his passing through the lines is so good.that pass he made to Ronaldo in the first half was really good.

Our attacking dynamic would change without him

Absolutely love him

Was nice to hear the commentators finally properly praise him today

Being selfish I don't want him to go to the world cup so he stays fit and available for us!

As insane as it sounds, he doesn't start for Argentina. Otamendi starts ahead of him.

I have a confession to make.. don't like him that much.

But I absolutely love the guy..

He finally gets some kind of recognition from pundits today on MOTD! Surprised it’s taken so long for them to acknowledge him.

It's taken 12 games, the first two of which he was part of a terrible team and result. It is not unreasonable that they won't jump to his praise earlier - it is not their job to 'acknowledge' our players. What matters is what he does with us, feck the media.

Erm... Improving is exactly what we're doing. With him at the heart of it. Unless said clubs are also carting off Ten Hag, Licha isn't going anywhere. Dude is unreal to watch.

luckily Argentina has both

His may be bias on my part, but Romero seems inferior in every way to Lisandro. Obviously in playmaking (I can't imagine there's a CB alive- apart from possibly Blind-who comes close to Martinez in this regard) but in terms of defending too. What impresses me about Martinez is that his decision making is impeccable. He's aggressive but never lets his aggression cloud his judgement. Romero on the other hand always seems like he has a mistake in him where he over-commits to a tackle or goes in too hard in a dangerous position.

Romero strikes me as a more similar character to Rojo than Martinez tbh. This is just based on what I've seen of Spurs this season though so you've probably seen him more extensively.

What a signing .

Quickly becoming my favourite player. He's immense both on and off the ball.

He is the heartbeat and soul of the team. I love the way he celebrates a win. It's as though he came through the ranks. It means that much to him.

I am not used to us having a defender who is essentially a deep lying playmaker at times with his forward progressive passing, solid defensively and hard as nails attitude all in one.

Gotta keep in mind you probably know more than them since you watch United more.
That would be an acceptable argument if it wasn’t for the fact that Sky and Carragher were quick to do a full analysis on him after just 2 games to conclude he could never work in the premier league.

Absolutely amazing.
Whats great is, we've seen how he's like in the trenches, when games are back and forth, and we lack control. They're better times ahead for team, where we'll dominant games like West Ham with 65 to 70 percent possession. He'll look even better offensively then.

He's a superb player, I think he's actually better than Romero at Spurs.
