And if the president had kept his word, then he would have left amicably [no need for caps], and everyone knew he had a clause this summer to leave for free.

We all know release clauses are mostly arbitrary, unless you get caught out like Neymar. Whether the clause was £400m/£600m or £1bn is irrelevant - and like you have stated, no one would even entertain paying the release clause.

It’s not screwing over Barcelona if he left in a free, as they agreed to the clause - just such a very strange stance you have on this. What will screw them is having to pay his wages this season for a player who wants out.

Have you seen the president? Do people not know how toxic the board is? He's literally up for corruption charges. Messi is just stating the truth. Xavi and Puyol won't go near the club right now speaks volumes.
 
So for the next season, we will have an uninterested Messi and probably some friends who will show their hate for the club administration on the field.
I feel sorry for Koeman.

But what you're misunderstanding, and where we clearly disagree is that you are saying Messi wanted to leave for free. Messi knew leaving for free, for a player of his stature wasn't going to happen. He had the clause put in back in 2017, he knew this board was awful. I'm glad you admit the board lied to him, but he was willing to negotiate for a transfer fee so Barca could get something out of it. The same way clubs sell players for below their release clause, Messi knew he had to meet Barca halfway. City would've gladly paid 100-150M as Messi signing would be the biggest moment in their history. Barca screwed up royally being stubborn. I just want us to rebuild, and now we are in disarray.

Guess the sarcasm wasn't obvious but there is no way Messi actually was gonna leave. I voted as such on the poll when it first when up. It is kind of likely he fizzle out if he goes anywhere now. He hasnt been tested in the PL at all and the odds of going down as a massive waste of money or space for City are too great imho. And yes i am talking about Messi.

I laugh at Barca's but as a football fan, I feel for you, man. It's a hell to have a board that have other interest more than the football itself.
 
City's CAS appeal verdict was announced on 13th June. They could have been banned from Europe for 2 seasons.

Can we stop pretending Messi didnt terminate his contract by 10th June because he wanted Barca to get a transfer fee?

The guy acted like a cnut.. Barca didnt roll over. He knows he has to stay and now is backtracking.

What is confusing my friend? Messi signed a contract in 2017 that would allow him to terminate his contract by June 10 of each year, or by season's end. The release clause comes into play if he doesn't notify the board. He told the board all season long he wanted to leave and they promised him an amicable exit. Now the season got pushed back because of COVID and he couldn't just publicly terminate his contract in the middle of a season. All hell would break lose. So he waited till UCL ended and legally sent in the fax.

I hope this makes sense now. :)
 
PathetIc from Messi's advisers. The clause has clearly expired legally so they have no leg to stand on thinking he can leave for free. I do think he will have to stay another season because noone is going to pay silly money for him and noone at Barca wants to allow him to leave for less than silly money. The idea that he could dispute it but doesn't want to is ridiculous. He can't dispute it because he has no proper grounds.

If he wanted to leave all season surely he could have engaged a lawyer to check the wording of his contract to ensure he could do so, especially if he did not trust the board. If not... very poor management.

I get that we are very hated on these forums and god knows we've had our fair hare of shady/cnuty behavior. We are far from an angelic club. But when you have politicians running a team instead of sports professionals, it feels like the club is just a circus for profit as oppose to a team with a vision. Really disheartening stuff even if we won't get sympathy from most people. Thanks for the kind words.

Hmm.. so the clause is for him to be able to leave for free, just by notifying the board by June 10? Whoever legally advised him to sent in the fax after June 10 needs to be fired then. Unless of course if there's a clause about "or season's end". So I don't see the problem.

I do see that is not a proper way to treat the Club legend who's given it all to the Club (albeit rewarded handsomely). And also raise Barcelona' stature to unprecedented level during his time. Sometimes those things are just priceless.

Yes exactly. If the paper says before June 10th then that clearly holds up and Covid and season extensions do not change that unless the paper is revised. It is ridiculous to argue otherwise.

You can't be serious. Messi and Coward. Even from the most 'tinted' or 'baised' person, I never thought I would hear that word for Messi. I guess you need to understand what comfort zone is better. The guy has literally been the back bone carrying that side for years - he is anything but a coward.

If anything, him staying means that he is being a leader who is accepting that he has been short-changed despite everything that was promised to him. And yet - he is going to give his best to remain a professional. Messi will have a phenomenal season again - i can guarantee it.

Coward better suits Sanchez, who decided that United was not for him within one week of joining (although, he is talking about Jose's dressing room, and not United as a club).

What we both can agree on, is that it’s a disastrous situation.
 
This has to be a lesson for Barca and to be honest all clubs , you can’t allow a player , no matter how good he is, to have the influence outside of the pitch and dressing room that Messi has . It can never do anything but weaken your position and status as a club. Barcelona look a circus now and there are no leaders off the field - it’s bound to transfer onto the pitch !

That list of accolades is for his entire career, i did not say they wasted his career, i am talking about the last 4-5 years. They haven't made a CL final since 2015. In the same 5 years they have only reached CL semis just once. They haven't had a decent manager since Enrique and he wasn't anything great to begin with.

He won't leave la liga because that's the only thing that suits him. He is comfortable in Spain and will not seek any new challenges. I would have respected him more if he took on a new challenge even if that meant going to a stacked Man City team.
 
Doesn't look great on any side. Messi is so much bigger than the club for some time now, but if you have so much influence you are also part of the problem for the whole mess. I mean, from the reports he was unhappy that the board sacked Velverde when it was clear as a day he was way out of his depth and plays the kind of football which is not close to Barca philosophy. Than you add mess called Argentina and it doesn't look great all together.

The board is stupid for not selling him for 100 - 150 million, one of many things they got wrong in recent years. The whole thing looks like a circus. If he wants to go, let him go, he sure as feck won't run more after this.
 
So Barca is willing to let him go for free next summer instead of selling him for 100-150m? This president is absolutely clueless.

How was not turning up for Covid testing or training and declaring that he was a free agent a demonstration of Messi looking to meet halfway? Seemingly he didn't even bother to check in as to whether some vague promise he had received was still going to be followed and just presumed he could walk off to City for free. I know Barcelona fans hate their board but there's an awful lot of jumping through hoops going on to make a guy who is paid over a million a week and is still under contract seem like a victim because his club don't want to let him go.

Weren’t the chances he won high though considering the clause they signed?

He is Lionel Messi and they could of made this happen. City were ready to pay all that and some in that massive deal reported.

I also don’t know why people are confusing this with “hate”. Since this news came out I said I would love to see him in England and in particular City.

I was rooting for this deal to happen.

That's your perspective - but he has consistently performed against the English clubs in the CL. So it's not like only the Spanish league suits him. Respecting him less is one thing, calling him a coward is completely something else.

Would've been far easier for him to do a Ronaldo and join a one-team league to stat-pad his career.

Ah, the last 4-5 years, where he's "only" won La Liga in 14-15, 15-16, 17-18 and 18-19, copa del rey in 14-15, 15-16, 16-17 and 17-18.

Proper fecking wasted the prime of his career hasn't he.

Buddy, he didn't back down due to his fear of the EPL. Did you read his interview? A lawsuit with Barca would be messy and heartbreaking. His clause says "June 10, at season's end". His team argues for "season's end" wording, while Barca hold stiff on the exact wording of June 10. Messi could obtain a certificate to leave for city while it goes to court but if he loses then city would have to pay 700M. Messi can now leave for free after the season. Barca screwed up royally.

Horrible take. Just running your mouth with no basis. His wanted to leave, but Barca wouldn't budge from 700M. People are acting like he just signed a 5 year extension with Barca while giving pep the bird. He still wants to leave, he's treated awfully by this toxic board.
