Again we see the same arguments as "But Messi didn't know he wasn't paying his taxes correctly, poor guy was just misinformed".

President or anyone saying stuff means jacks**t. You either have it written down or it never happened. Too childish to assume Bartemou is some embodiment of truth.

Forcing the board to step down isn't going to magically alter their finances. It's about spending the last few years of his career at a club that has a very realistic chance of winning the CL. Barca have been terribly mismanaged over the last few years and it's very hard to see how they can rebuild quick enough given his age.

Shame he won't leave as that would have been interesting. Now they've got a rebuild on their hands under a relatively underwhelming manager, with public acrimony between their star player and the board. All their dirty laundry out in the open, and increased pressure with the scrutiny this drama has exacerbated.

It comes down to loyalty vs ambition though at the end of the day though, so it depends where his head’s at. It’s understandable if he’d want to finish his career at the club he’s won so much at already. I was expecting a protracted legal battle in all honesty, so I’m just surprised it’s been largely wrapped up and he’s backed down.

Forcing the board out obviously won’t fix their finances no, but they’ve hardly presented themselves as capable of steering the club in the right direction. I certainly wouldn’t want them at United if it were us.

Your argument is ridiculous. He’s stated he wanted to leave, he had a clause to leave for free.

Why do you think he would want city to pay a fee for him, when they didn’t need to if the clause was activated?

There’s a massive difference between the costs of Hazard and Messi, and you know that.

How is my argument ridiculous? The clause needs to be activated by June 10 but Barca were in the middle of the season. Several good tier sources at City said they were willing to pay a fee, just not 100M. Your argument is just dumb. City knew this was going to be dicey situation and would only put in a bid once Barca would agree to sell him. Barto refused to go lower than 700M. Messi said all season to Barto he was going to leave. The contract wording from his side was based on the agreement that it was season's end, Barca are saying it had to be June 10 but Messi leaving in the middle of a season would've thrown the whole team in dissaray. You just don't have much of an idea of what you're talking about.

FFS..every thread on the Caf has to be spoilt by bitter Ronaldo runts.

So Messi was informing Bartomeu about leaving for a year but he told his wife at last minute? "Honey, I have a surprise for you. Let's move to rainy Manchester!"

No balls at all to test his ability elsewhere.

I was super excited to finally see him in EPL but I should of known he was never going to leave the comfort zone o Barca.

Nothing changed so staying makes no sense. His excuse of not taking them to court makes no sense either.

Sorry Sporting, but this might be one of the worst posts you've made on here. Court is absolutely not worth the risk in the chance that he loses. Would be moronic to take that risk and be held up in litigation for years. City won't sign him with a court case, they don't want to retroactively be forced to pay a 700M clause. He literally told Barto ALL SEASON he wanted to leave. He's miserable at Barca, this was a pretty dumb take my friend.

Just scared to ruin his reputation in the PL is what this is.
Koeman must secretly be a bit relieved though Messi seems like he could easily sour the mood in the dressing room.

Dumb take. There's a lawsuit pending if he went through with it. City aren't going near him with Barca threatening a court case. Stunning how so many people have such horrible takes on this forum at times.

I am afraid it’s you who doesn’t know what your talking about.

What is your rationale for thinking he wants to leave, not for free, but for a fee? It seems a nonsensical argument.

Did he want to leave? Yes
Did he think he could leave on a free? Yes

Yet you somehow think he actually wanted to leave for a transfer fee?

Good, if he actually joined City they'd surely be winners of PL for next 3 seasons, plus probably UCL winners at least once.

Think Messi will stay at Barca until he's 36/37 and then go to MLS/back to Argentina.

Bartomeu won't be Barca president this time next year so think this was unique chance for Messi to leave.

He'll leave for free at the end of the season.

He understandably doesn't want to do his legacy more harm there, especially as an outcome of a potential trial is unknown. It would have been better to get City to find a nice financial arrangement with Barca - which could still happen, given how diabolical things have turned out there.

Regarding their board, yes terrible. But we're one of the few clubs in the world where we can't really be looking down on them. We're largely similar. We've mismanaged 100s of millions of pounds over the last 7 years with almost nothing to show for it but a squad that's uncompetitive at the highest level and still one of the best paid. Thankfully, we're edging towards some slightly more sensible path.

I’m guessing this was all to try and force the board to step down. I’m actually quite surprised they haven’t been forced out considering the mess they’ve made of the club.

What's the incentive for the board to step down? I mean, if they don't want to, who has the real power to force them out?

Not surprised at all about the result. Only thing: There is no winner and Messi is the loser of this!

Because he has stated many times he wanted to leave AMICABLY. Nearly every tier 1 source from both Barca and City have said he wanted Barca and City negotiate on a fee. He only wanted out of his contract which included a free clause. It's like Ronaldo having a billion euro release clause but Madrid will settle for just 100M. Messi wanted to terminate his contract, but would not screw over Barca, Literally every tier 1 source from Barcelona has mentioned this, his camp was constantly trying to ngotiate with Barto to work something out with city, but they refused to budge from 700M which Messi himself says no club could afford to pay. Read his interview. I've been following this every single day since he sent in the fax. Now, Messi can leave for free after the coming season and Barto screws the club once again. Could've gotten 100-150M from city plus saving on Messi's wages but now they will have nothing after next season.

Yeah.. something saying the deadline to terminate his contract was being extended from june because of Covid and the season still going on.
in that case the board didnt grant him that legally, knowing it was clearly his request.

The way I see it. The board has won this round, regardless of how Messi's entourage wants to spin it.
Baretmou going away is inevitable. What would be interesting is whether Messi changes his stance and signs an extension by end of upcoming season.

I’ve laughed all through this
One of, if not thee, best footballer of all time wants to leave his club for free in this day and age of dodgey agents and owners and he is upset/shocked he can’t?
Is he off his ****ing rocker?
Especially when he still has a good few years left of being at or near the top 3 players in the world

I find it incredible people think this is over. That interview is basically saying the board have lied to me, I am legally allowed to leave for free, I love the club too much to take it through a messy court battle, I want to leave for a fair price and they can rebuild on younger players with the money which is best for the club but the board won’t accept anything under 700m and I’m being forced to stay against my wishes. Oh and the President is a disaster.

I don’t think that’s a tenable position for Barcelona to take against their greatest ever footballer and the pressure on the board is even bigger now.

FINALLY, someone who gets it

Happy city won't get him.

If he does leave I hope we are in for him next year

I don’t know the ins and outs of Barca politics, but surely the club being owned by its membership makes the board a lot more answerable to the fans.

He never wanted to leave for free, he just wanted to get out of his contract. He's not shocked at all, he's been asking to leave all season.

The biggest troll will be if Bartomeu carries on as if nothing happened, talking about sporting project, sending his car without him in it outside Jorge Messi's house at regular intervals.

Your wording is a bit confusing. So if there's a clause, there's nothing Barca can do if someone pay the clause, whether it's June 10 or later then. Or whether Barto wants 700m.

Edit: so it seems the release clause is 700m? And Messi didn't know this when he signed his new shinny contract last time?

Why are Barca asking for 700 million, fair enough that his buy out but nobody is paying that fee.

They could easily get 100 million plus for him, why not get rid of the bad egg and put the funds towards two or three players with potential. They can't rebuild with a 33 year old anyway.

How much does people think he's worth?

Exactly, barca screwed up royally here. As a fan, it would be extremely painful for him to leave the club, but he deserves to leave if that's what he wants. Barca's board is the worst.

His prime wasted

Jesus fecking christ, he has played for a team that has completely dominated the feck out of Spain, he's got 10 league titles, 4 CL titles, 6 copa del reys and he's won the ballon d'or 6 fecking times, not to mention the fact that he's one of the best paid players in the world. Has any team won as many big trophies in the same period of time (Apart from the one team leagues that are Germany and France).

And somehow his prime has been wasted.

fecking mint that.
Why are Germany and France always called the "one-team-leagues", when actually Juventus in Italy has the longest streak of being league winners with 9 titles in a row?

Spain is not much better, since Real and Barca have won 15 out of the last 16 league titles.

The reality is that out of the 5 big leagues in Europe, only one is unpredictable - the Premier League. That's also only due to the fact, that nearly every team has some sugar daddy in the Premier League.

National leagues being "one-horse-races" or at best "two-horse-races" has actually been norm in Europe for quite some time, not some kind of "special phenomenon".

In the other 4 big leagues it has been like this for almost a decade now (with only some very rare outliers):

Spain - Barca or Real
Germany - Bayern
France - PSG
Italy - Juve

If it's true, then why the drama? Fans can just get rid of the board easily.

Yeah.

The real winner here is Cristiano

Not at all, Juventus was a disastrous move as the team is very poorly run. He should've stayed at Madrid but wanted more money. Juventus won't win another CL with that squad.

To oust the board you need 16,000 signatures. Like hand signatures which is very tough during COVID. The board only runs 6 years at a time so Barto's time is up anyway come March.
