Lionel Messi

This basically spells out that Messi can leave, from Bartomeu himself. I can't see him not leaving after how this situation is going. Only thing I can see happen is some sort of player swap to bypass all the bullshit

I'm surprised that so many seem nonchalant about this. It's more significant than the on-the-pitch side of things, for me.

We have to improve, only the Glazers, Ed and the coaching staff have it in their Hands. At this rate, City and Liverpool will dominate for quite a while and leave us behind at some point. Messi is just the accelerator, but we have to do the improvement ourselves and not hope our rivals fail. Liverpool and City are doing a lot of things right, while we aren't. I bet the club is pretty relaxed about it though

Exactly. Messi is naturally a bid draw for Spanish football coverage and now he's considering jumping ship towards the big,bad and commercially in-demand Premier League.
Precisely,if he leaves that would leave the likes of Hazard and Griezmann as the biggest draws in the league

Hazard did feck all last season and Real still won the league

Not if he exercised his exit clause before the new season began. It’ll go to court and let’s see what happens but he had a clause to let him out of contract once the season ended. The technicality is whether the June 10 date will be enforced to notify the team due to covid which extended the season

Won’t have a chance in court and Barce know it. Pandemic or not he didn’t exercise the release clause and the date has expired. Funny how he didn’t refuse to play in the CL games and there was no mention if him leaving until they got knocked out.

He does the same shit every time Argentina get knocked out of a tournament he must have retired about 5 times.

Is there any indication of whether he had checked the legality of the clause being extended due to Covid before that date or notified Barcelona that he still planned to activate it? Surely he can't have just presumed that it would be alright.

And this where it will go to court. What may work against messi is that the Spanish courts will look at exact wording first (must notify the club by June 10) whereas his lawyers are saying covid nullifies that date since he couldn’t up and leave outside of a transfer window. It’s going to be ugly

The major clubs themselves will draw interest from their dedicated fanbase's but for the neutral football/soccer fan all eyes will be on the PL more so than ever before.

We're behind in current footballing terms, not in club reputation/size/viewership/history/etc. Messi going there now means they'll get a feck ton of fans who flock to see him, you'll have loads of kids growing up wanting to be like Messi, loads of new sponsorship opportunities, they're claim to having lured the best player of all time to play for them, and now the best possible chance at finally winning the Champions League. All of this not only brings them up, but also drops us down as it'll be like officially we are no longer the biggest club in Manchester, loads of those fans will leave United for City, we'll lose sponsorship opportunities as they'd rather pick City ahead of us now due to viewership/appeal and whatever else.

If there's anything that can create a big shift in the overall club size/reputation, its this.
I see where you're coming from but unfortunately of all that exists, Messi coming will just make it bigger. Only thing which speaks for our case right now is history. And although Messi coming is a big deal Sancho potentially coming will soften the blow and mean board cares about this things. It would be funny if he flopped there but I don't see it happening.

Horrible take. Ronaldo was getting crap from Ramos for hinting at his departure and taking a bit away from their 2018 CL win as Ramos felt Ronaldo should have waited to let out the news that he was leaving. Ronaldo just bailed right after. Messi stuck through all the humiliations and finally had a breaking point. But go ahead, keep reaching.

Humiliation by getting paid 1m a week:lol: he controls your football club. He decides who manages and when he was told he is not going to get that anymore, he decided to leave to an oil club who can afford his outrageous salary. You need to get out of Messi arse.
He may the greatest player of all time but seriously stop making excuses for him.

Sancho is literally the only way our club can respond to this situation if they want to appear serious about football and not get killed in terms of losing sponsors/viewers/fans. Will be very very bad if we do nothing of note and they sign Messi (after Liverpool won the league).

Sadly I wouldn't be surprised it it doesn't happen at all. Fingers crossed we sign him.

I want messi to be sold so the club can move on and fix the rest of the squad. Your laughable holier than thou attitude about oil clubs is cute though

To be honest he doesn't mention date in that. End of the season can be 10th June which Barca is claiming. If date is mentioned in the contract, Messi won't win in court.

He's doing the right thing. He's given so much to Barcelona he's almost synonymous with the club. If they go on a barren run they have to learn to fix the systemic issues that cause them. He can't be expected to spend all his latter years carrying them while Bartemeu rips the club to shreds regardless. Maybe it can be more amicable buts this is

Messi is one of the biggest systematic issues at Barcelona.

Football is increasingly played as a team, but you simply cannot play as a team with Messi. You have to tailor everything around him because he has no workrate and he must have the ball to be the best player in the world.

He is also surrounded by an outrageous cult, and his fans has almost completely replaced the original fans of the club (at least internationally). Whenever there's any setback, they point the finger at other key persons in the club, which creates a toxic atmosphere.

It also goes without saying that his wage is a huge huge financial burden on the club.

People just can't see past Messi's on-the-ball ability when football is so much more than just one player's technical prowess alone.

La Liga of course will stop him trying to leave because he's their prized asset and has been for over a decade.

They may legally not have a way to stop it, it all depends on the wording of the contract and the clause.

You are on Manchester United forum. What do you expect that people make excuses for Abu Dhabi Fc like you are doing for Messi? It's cute suddenly Barca fans care about Manchester City. That is laughable.

He is leaving you when you need a rebuild. Didn't know a team needs to sell its greatest player ever who is still world class to do that. Messi is leaving because he doesn't have the same power that he enjoyed and his friend has been asked to leave. It's laughable that you can't see that. You want him sold that's great but don't make sorry excuses like how he is so great and Ronaldo is mercenary. That's what I responded to. Also he is trying to leave for free by breaking the contract and you are claiming that he is trying to get your club a fee.

Many great players had a nasty farewell at Barça, always with board / coach issues.
Maradona, Schuster, Ronaldo, Laudrup, Rivaldo and now surely Messi.

Messi doesn't want to share his image rights with the club.
When he was convicted and had to pay 50 million to the treasury, it was the club that took over with his new contract.
As well as obviate all criticism of Messi in European failures.
Not exactly a victim

best case... city sign him for free, gets challenged, city owe 700m, FFP fecked for 10 years, have to keep paying messi 100m a year deep into his 30s where he spends all his time on the treatment table at the hands of mctominay

You’re so full of rubbish. No idea what you are talking about except out your arse. Messi sees the board has no clue what it is doing. Literally the worst board for a major club of the last 20 years. He has a good 2-3 seasons tops. I understand that you like this holier than thou bs to help you sleep at night but you have absolutely no idea what is going on in this situation.

And yes, Ronaldo is a mercenary no question. And that’s okay. He wanted to be the highest paid football player in the world and now made the awful awful decision of signing with a Juventus team that is nowhere close to winning UCL. A club that got demoted to second division for corruption and rigging matches. Messi is the goat, but Barca need to move on so we can rebuild. All this drama is hurting our chances of working on other transfers we desperately need.

Probably he isn't leaving after that La Liga statement. No one can buy out that humungous release-clause sum, not even oil money!

Edit: can't leave...

And many Madrid legends had bad exits as well like Casillas and some others as well. We had been great with our legends in recent times (xavi, iniesta, mascherano) but this current board is whack.

If Messi and his team genuinely believe his exit clause is valid than yes, he is held hostage. If the courts find that he is still legally bound to Barca than Messi would be the one at fault. The board Barca have are beyond moronic

They may legally not have a way to stop it, it all depends on the wording of the contract and the clause.
This. Revenues from broadcasting rights and advertising will surely be affected by losing the biggest name in current football. La Liga trying to protect its product, no way they can be impartial over this.

That’s why neither side wants this to go to court

Losing Neymar, Ronaldo and Messi will make a huge hit on the La Liga clubs, especially the smaller Ones. We probably talking hundreds of millions in lost broadcasting money and advertising money. So yes, of course La liga be on Barcas side.

You are trolling on Manutd forum. I don't want to feed it anymore. Messi is a victim and should be allowed to leave for free but Ronaldo is mercenary for leaving. Also Mancity is great because Oil money is great and who cares about human rights abuses and democratic rights. Ironic coming from Barca fan.Got it. Now you move on and fight for Messi.

The problem for Pep et al is that they don't have enough days in the transfer window for all legal hearings regarding the 700m exit clause to be clarified.
The sum is too big for anyone to gamble. It could ruin any club.

They're fecked if he does leave, at least in the short term. Neymar in 2017, Ronaldo in 2018 and Messi in 2020... it'll be a massive revenue and reputation hit for them.

You just haven’t gotten a clue what you’re talking about is the problem. There’s no point in you even posting in this thread when you have no idea about his contract or what his happening with the club. Glad I won’t have to listen to these awful takes from you anymore cuz it’s just baffling what you spout

The broadcasting stuff is a bit of a stretch. What are the numbers for Ligue 1 and Serie A before and after Neymar and Ronaldo? Is there any evidence?

Barca lose him next year on a free anyway if he is so adamant on leaving so they may aswell try to get a good deal from City out of it. They've wanted that Garcia for awhile so it makes sense to include him and 1 or 2 others in a swap deal + cash and everyone kind of wins in that situation

I think Barca are posturing for a transfer fee and they will get it. Something similar to what Rinaldo went to Juve for.
The idea they would force Messi to stay and take him to court is laughable. It would ruin their season before a ball is kicked.

What are you laughing at? Do you have any idea how many watching la liga regulary (and pays for it) due to their favourite players? La Liga distribute €1,4 Billion In TV money 2019. Let’s see the next 5 years how much it will be and then compare it to other leagues. Im sure it will be hundreds of million over these years.

La Liga stating that the clause remains active...and then bizarrely that anyone will have to meet the clause. Surely that’s Barcelona’s decision? Frankly they’d be foolish to reject 150m for an albeit goat who’s wages alone would free up a staggering amount of money...especially given his age, frustrations and the clubs need to reinvest.

Hasn't tarnished David Silva's character in the eyes of most.
Only very very few will talk about these things at the end of his career.
David Silva is a nobody compared to Messi he is basically irrelevant. Messi going there is a big deal because it shows crooked politicking and dirty money won. It’s a disgrace to the game and we should be at war against a sport that allows clubs like City and PSG to flourish.

Messi has been a pure thing in world football when it comes to pure talent & he means more than Manchester City in the game. It’s a shame he would join them and be complicit in their devious actions.

Again Barcelona won all those trophies not Manchester City. They just want the reflected glory because they are a poor mans Barcelona without history or passion. A soulless entity with ambitions that aren’t even about football. Football means nothing in their agenda.

It’s all about face for a country thousands of miles away that shouldn’t have any links to our game either financially or historically. Theft of our sporting culture too, we could go on.

No, you are a figment of the past. A city are the future of the epl much more so than united. Everton used to be great too once upon a time. United have been dire more often than not since SAF left.
Everton just left their rejects to manage Barcelona, perhaps not a good idea to throw stones if you sit in a glass house.
