Very much doubt Messi will have a goalscoring cakewalk in the PL as all the attention will be on him and every team and every defensive player on and around him will see it as the pinnacle of their career to try and stop him - not that they necessarily can, but with his age and slowing down, him being up for all that hustle and bustle in the pursuit of goals is, I think, less likely than his assist numbers going even higher.. Double and triple teams are inevitable, what should happen in the meantime, however, is him finding a bazillion ways to slot others in who will be in acres of space due to his mere presence elsewhere on the pitch.

Unless City switch to a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2, Aguero's about to lose his spot, I think... the RWF position seems to be mentioned for Messi in association with the main body of his work, but that move into the centre of the pitch is looming, and Pep won't have that lack of graft out on a flank otherwise De Bruyne would be compromised or in need of moving for a CM minder for Messi, which is not Pep's style.

It all depends how Guardiola deploys Messi, really. City's team is well drilled, they have clear patterns in the build up and organized runs in the attack. Messi hasn' had a team like that since at least 2015, probably even 2013 which has lots and lots to do with him dropping deeper and deeper in recent years. In Barcelona's prime years, Messi could focus on the final third and was incredibly hard to mark due to his false 9 movement. Wide forwards making deep runs and him dropping into the half spaces always ensured that somebody could find him with a pass between the lines. It'll be interesting to see if he can at least somewhat reproduce his output in such a team. City definitely don't need him to initiate attacks from deep like Barca did in the last years.

What's probably even more interesting is the question how Messi's integration would affect de Bruyne's playing style. Right now he's occupying lots of spaces Messi likes to operate in. And de Bruyne also has the privilege to lose lots and lots of balls. I think if Messi really joins City, Guardiola will ask de Bruyne to play less risky.

If I was a Barcelona fan, I'd be furious with how he's handled the entire situation.

Not at all, he’s being held hostage, was originally looking for an amicable split, Barto is the one acting like a child. Just jet the man go, negotiate with City, and start rebuilding

How is he being held hostage? He signed the fecking contract. Same this as the "I'm a slave" quotes a decade ago.

Isn't it obvious. When KDB plays, Messi will be scoring goals. When KDB don't play, Messi will be creating tons of chances for Sterling to miss. :p

Ederson over Ter Stegan?
Ake over Pique?
Mendy over Alba?
Rodri over Busquets?
Gundogan over De Jong?
There are probably 3 players from the city squad that would get in that Barca team. De Bruyne, Aguero and Sterling you could argue Walker but it's not a sure thing.

Yeah I think he'll break the single season goalscoring record in the premier league if he goes there. Or at least be right around it (40/50 in all comps, 20/30 assists in all comps sort of thing). Think it hurts Aguero's playing time, as Aguero was the one until now who didn't do shit defensively but that'll obviously now be Messi who is levels above anyone else in the world still. Foden I think will still be used in the midfield 3 pretty frequently with Silva gone.

Silver lining for me is that for the next 3 years, I think City will dominate the league and stop Liverpool. We won't be there under our owners IMO, so might as well be anyone but Liverpool. Also even if it is for them, will still be good in a way to see him in the premier league... just probably will go away very quickly when he's scoring for fun and they're running away with it.

On the negative side, this kills our reputation and flips the scales I think. It cements City as an elite club in a seismic way, being able to say they had the greatest player of all time join them and pick only them, they'll become the most watched team in England with him, they'll be able to say that they had the greatest of all time play for them and not United, and they'll surely win the CL now with him. Of course anything can happen in the CL, but they're massive favourites and they'll have probably 3 years to get it.

My guess is Pep goes:
Sterling Messi ***
De Bruyne ***
Rodri
Mendy Laporte Ake Walker
Ederson
With the 2 "***" being a mix of Aguero, Jesus, Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Gundogan and Foden. Must be nice...

As far as I know, those quotes were taken out of context, weren't they?

And in this case there's still the clause in his contract which should've been extended due to Corona, in all fairness. I mean, if not then Corona essentially eliminated a part of his contract to the vast advantage of Barcelona.

Busquets not what he was, but anyway its a coaching thing and Barca were dysfunctional and just very old now. City have a better attacking group and one of the top 5 players in the world in De Bruyne, and are at their peak pretty much. They also have Pep as the manager who's worst quality is shooting himself in the foot in knockout stages, but Messi should help him get past his own problems, compared to whatever random manager Barca select for some dumb reason and change twice a season. They're run worse than we are, but had the luck of having Messi for 16 years so every top player wanted to play alongside him and he'll make any manager compete at least for every trophy.

Held hostage on his 1.3m per week contract that still runs for another year?

We're behind them in any case, Messi coming won't change much in that regard. Will make them more popular, sure, but I don't it will change things so dramatically.

KDB could swap with any of Busi-Xavi-Iniesta and Barca wouldn't of been any worse of for it.... it's frightening to think of him and Messi together. Though they don't have Dani Alves, who was unbelievably key, and Pep's ultra desperate to find him, somehow Klopps got two of them, but not the genius level footballer(s) than Pep has in the middle.

Yeah, foden looks like the one to be impacted by this, if so that’ll send a bad message when recruiting young talents. He’s been waiting for his chance for a long time already.
I think we'll see Foden speaking publically saying, 'the chance to play alongside Messi is great,' 'I'll get my chances'. Etc.. but really he'll be worrying for his game time. Hes on a long contract now isn't he?

Of course this is all hypothetical thinking at this stage but he's probably been promised the chance once Silva leaves so of course he'll be disappointed if he doesnt play. Hes good enough to play every game alongside De Bruyne.

I think he will play a false 9 role under Pep like he did in his final two seasons at Barca.
He will score plenty.

KDB does not start in that Barcelona midfield. He's a level below, as good as he is.

I wouldn't be overly worried of city dominating things with him, how many times have barca won the champions league in the past decade with him along side many other greats in the same side? Have Juventus blown away competition both domestically and in europe since buying ronaldo?

I can see them comfortably regaining the title with him in their first 11. in CL under Guardiola, they lost in quarters three times in row and once in the round of 16, so that's obviously going to change as well. even at 33/34, I'm sure he'll be amazing in EPL.

Can’t believe the best player in the world is available on a free and Man City of all clubs are going to get him. Modern day football sucks.

I didn't claim that to be fair because I'm getting into that debate as it's a bit pointless. I said they could swap with any of them and they'd be no worse off, I stand by that. KdB is utterly fabulous in my opinion and I'd put in the top tier group of modern midfielders circa 2000 onwards, I'm not ranking them because then intangibles which include massive luck play the biggest part. Unlike them 3, he's never played with someone in front of him at Messi's level, he's never had a full back at Alves' level, and he's never played with a midfield that's generally as stacked as Barca or Spain... a converted David Silva has mostly been his best partner.

If you ask me it's more like 'Messi is more then a club' then just 'more then a club. Even the barca supporters(at least on the caf) worship Messi more than they love Barca. Most Barca supporters will buy City shirts anyways when Messi is gone to City.

Seeing people acting like Messi owes Barcelona anything is funny given that he's given them more as a a club than any player likely ever has for any 1 club.

He doesn't owe them anything at this point and has been carrying them despite shambolic and duplicitious decision making by the club for years.

Barcelona taking the ugly public divorce route with their greatest player will only end up hurting them much more than it might hurt Messi in the short term.

We're behind in current footballing terms, not in club reputation/size/viewership/history/etc. Messi going there now means they'll get a feck ton of fans who flock to see him, you'll have loads of kids growing up wanting to be like Messi, loads of new sponsorship opportunities, they're claim to having lured the best player of all time to play for them, and now the best possible chance at finally winning the Champions League. All of this not only brings them up, but also drops us down as it'll be like officially we are no longer the biggest club in Manchester, loads of those fans will leave United for City, we'll lose sponsorship opportunities as they'd rather pick City ahead of us now due to viewership/appeal and whatever else.

If there's anything that can create a big shift in the overall club size/reputation, its this.

The league is protecting their interest which is undoubtedly Barcelona.

La Liga's president despises Man City and the gulf oil clubs in general. He's taken public shots at them for years, no surprise he'd defend Barcelona's interest instead of happily accepting the alternative of his league losing the likes of Ronaldo and Messi in a 2 year span along Neymar + both of them over the past 3 years

Anyone know what this is about?

La Liga has sided with Barcelonas interpretation of the contract.

They did the same with Neymar and tried to refuse the release clause because he didn't want to lose a star to PSG. Tebas is a joke and knows that losing Neymar, then Ronaldo and now Messi kills the league and is disastrous for them, so they'll do everything on their power to stop it but likely don't actually have a leg to stand on.

Because he and his lawyers have felt they were within their rights to terminate his contract due to his exit clause that is available after each season. They will go to court. Barca refuse to even begin to negotiate

Spot on

Is that not a different set of circumstances?

Not if he exercised his exit clause before the new season began. It’ll go to court and let’s see what happens but he had a clause to let him out of contract once the season ended. The technicality is whether the June 10 date will be enforced to notify the team due to covid which extended the season

I'm surprised that so many seem nonchalant about this. It's more significant than the on-the-pitch side of things, for me.

But if they're right about the terms of his contract why should they be obliged to let him go for below their asking price (presumably his release clause)? He hasn't done it out of the goodness of his heart, he's paid the most of any footballer in the world by miles because he's the best player in the world. If he's right about the nature of the clause then prove it and then fair enough he can go for free, otherwise Barcelona would justifiably want a huge fee given they're already not in great shape financially and he's essentially irreplaceable.

Is there any indication of whether he had checked the legality of the clause being extended due to Covid before that date or notified Barcelona that he still planned to activate it? Surely he can't have just presumed that it would be alright.

Exactly. Messi is naturally a bid draw for Spanish football coverage and now he's considering jumping ship towards the big,bad and commercially in-demand Premier League.

Probably a side of things people aren't thinking about yet. Its a lose lose situation really. Messi doesn't sign for City, Liverpool likely gets title 20 soon and surpasses us before too long. Messi signs for City, maybe they hold off Liverpool long enough until Klopp leaves/they decline and we get our shit together, but City are now the biggest club in England and they win 3 in a row league titles and finally win the CL.

Its just a crazy situation and something we have to respond to in a big way if we want out reputation to hold (big like getting Sancho over the line). Its incomprehensible to have Liverpool win the title, Leeds get promoted, City bring in Messi, Liverpool bring in Thiago and United to not respond at all. Its incredibly damaging not making a big move in itself when everyone knows we need one.

Fifa basically said months ago that all contracts should be looked at with dates more intentions of end of season rather than June 30th or whatever specifically.
Bartomeu also a few years ago had an interview where he explained that Messi had a 4 year contract, but before his final year (20/21) he could leave on a free if he chose and its a contract they use with all their greats like Iniesta, Xavi, etc. He then followed it up by saying Messi is a "cule" and wouldn't do that and he'll stay for many years because he has no reason to leave...

FIFA were ignored though. They didnt have the power to alter legal documents
