Lionel Messi

Hope once and for all the myth he is mentally weak is finished. There are so many myths regarding him and Ronaldo but that one is the most amazing to read sometimes.

Yeah it's ridicolous. If CR7 was not competing in the same era, Messi would have won around 10 ballon d'ORs in a row. Not to mention averaging a goal a game for a decade is insane. I can remember Scholes saying that the mentality and nerves that Ronaldo and Messi have to consistently be the worlds best every year is unprecedented. Not to mention all the scrutiny from the media these days.

I don't think Messi is weaker mentally than Ronaldo, but Ronaldo has a different personality. Ronaldo wants to be the main man and be in the spotlight. He wants all the glory, he is obsessed with immortalizing himself while Messi is more of a team player. He doesn't talk much during games, but speaks by performing on the pitch and does what he can to contribute to the entire team.

Messi can be a bit of a WUM though

Although if I had to choose someone to take the decisive penalty in a final, I would pick Ronaldo over Messi, but doesn't mean I rate Ronaldo as better.

It’s unbelievable anyone can think players from this level are mentally weak as it’s baffling anyone thinks Ronaldo never had talent, everything comes from the gym.

Do you not remember 2008?

It's not peak Ronaldo though. When they were younger, Messi was more decisive in big games/moments, but Ronaldo improved so much in terms of his big game performances (especially in the CL), mostly mentally.

This is one of my favorite clips ever. Not because of Messi's goal.

1. Build up from the other commentator
2. Ray Hudson's initial ejaculation
3. "... sinks his spear, into the hearts, of Real Madrid"
4. The frame of Marcelo collapsing
5. Casemiro looking from the sideline
6. Enrique jumping
7. Ronaldo histrionics
8. Messi's celebration
9. The referee's slow and deliberate yellow card motion
10. The goal replay
11. "... cool as the seeds inside a cucumber"

Well yeah, but that was a one off really. He scored the only goal in that final too. But after his move to Madrid he has been exceptional in scoring in the biggest games and has been scoring tons of important penalties in the CL like againt Athletico recently.

Messi missed his penalty against Iceland, which well shit happens, but Ronaldo seems to more decisive and confident as a penalty taker.

Didn't Ronaldo also miss at a world cup? Ronaldo is a better pen taker but has missed some important ones too. CL Final, WC and I'm sure others too.

I dunno, in the 2018 world cup? I dunno, which game? Iran it seems. So there is you go.

All players who are teams designated penalty taker are bound miss some sooner or later.

I don't know how Messi's and Ronaldo's penalty records compare. I have the perception that Ronaldo's is better, but I don't know. Who is actually the best penalty taker in world at the highest level?

Oh Ronaldo is definitely better at it and one or the better ones around. I'm not contesting that.

That goal is one of the prime examples of Messis mental fortitude. He has a black eye after getting an elbow to the face from Marcelo and in the same game Sergio Ramos got sent off after he tried to murder him with an absolutely crazy challenge. Yet still, he goes on to deliver a perfect finish in the most crucial moment of the game. What a player!

AT the Bernabeu, were most players faint or shit their pants.

There are many nuances available indeed when describing them. The average football likes to talk in extremes.
Messi is also a very dedicated athlete but it is rarely mentioned. Ronaldo's knack for being on the end of crosses isn't luck either, intelligence and natural game reading abilities.

Absolutely.

The mentally "weak" stuff only comes from comparisons to CR7 so I won't bring it up here. In general though, of course he's not mentally weak. You don't become Messi by being mentally weak.

I hope when they retire, one day they make a show with only the 2 of them discussing football like Keane and Viera did
Honestly don’t think they are the best players to share opinions regarding football, one is afraid of the cameras the other one doesn’t seem interested in nothing more than beating records.

I've never seen that goal from this angle before.

How did they give Messi of all people that much space and time? Insane!

We need to pray and pray and pray for him to have a bad series, and if he does then we need our best defensive performance.

If he is on a good day then we are done, there’s nothing you can do against him.

it happens against spurs and Arsenal aswell. Late in the game teams are run ragged
I'd just ignore some of the other players and prioritise staying with him.

But yeah after being passed to death by Barca for 90 minutes, you're mentally and physically tired.

Does anybody know how many free kick goals Messi has scored so far this season?

I feel like it's his best season since his last treble. Absolutely unplayable, everything he touches turns to gold. Not a great time to face him (like there is any).

Juve Atletico Madrid and Roma did fine...

Might just be.

Oddly, he always seems to have these seasons after the World Cup.

2010-2011(his best season imo), 2014-2015 and now 2018-2019.
