Lionel Messi

He's set such an unbelievable standard for himself over the past decade that people have been desensitized to the outrageous things he does every week.
That's what I mean , there was no other with such standard , so this simply shows who is the GOAT .

I think it's more people don't watch him play every week - most probably only watch him 2-3 times a year and miss out on him consistently providing magical moments of skill and invention. Perhaps they are a little desensitised to the numbers though.

In actuality, Messi has nothing to prove in league or domestic football, and in terms of legacy, nothing will change for him in relation to that.

Winning and delivering in a few more Champions Leagues can probably elevate him a little, although not winning another one won't lessen his standing.

So the obvious elephant in the room is that which shalt not be named. If he can, somehow pull it off the one demerit will be removed and things will change emphatically from there.

So no, I don't think anyone is desensitized, rather it's a given and will stand out only when it no longer is the case that he's the domestic king.

Before Messi's debut, Barcelona had only a 19% win-rate at the Bernabeu, and head-to-head was 87-66 in Madrid's favour. Between Messi's debut and now, Barcelona have a 55% win-rate at the Bernabeu, and the head-to-head is now 96-95 for Barca.

So since his debut, Madrid have won 8 Clasicos to Barcelona's 30.

Thanks, reddit.

Obviously it's not all down to him, but he's very clearly a massive part of it. What an insane turnaround. The players Barcelona have had since 2005 is just incredible.

Incredible stuff. They managed to completely mess up the very first sentence

"Barcelona's very own Lionel Messi made his competitive debut at the age of 16 years, four months, and 23 days old in a friendly against FC Porto."

That was the first mark displaying his will to win. He managed to turn a friendly into a competitive match, in his debut!

16 year old Messi on his Barcelona B debut (good quality highlights). 15 years ago today!

Lad I know owns a magazine aimed mostly at footballers and has been with him today as he's in the next one

Hope once and for all the myth he is mentally weak is finished. There are so many myths regarding him and Ronaldo but that one is the most amazing to read sometimes.

Aye, sort of like a “you need to criticize the one to strengthen your belief that the other is the best”....because clearly we can’t just enjoy them both.

A guy who scores in alsmost every final he's played and is the greatest El Clasico goalscorer can't be a mentally weak person, it's ridiculous.

One of the most annoying things everytime one plays and the other fails are the extreme level of soundbytes to not call it dishonesty stated as serious opinion. And I say this for both sides.

Incredible player, only player that leaves me in awe with his alien like ability.

Well you can read those things stated as opinion and better not talk when he is involved with Argentina.

With Argentina he's almost always our best player. In fact without him we would've been out of WC.

But then they expect him to dribble everyone and score, no one can do that. The team was horrendous and he had to come down and play in midfield most of time.

It’s the nature of the modern day football fan I guess.

I’ve hardly ever entered that debate on here. And these days I barely enter their threads because as you say, it’s the same shite over and over.

The same for me. It’s reaching a level that one day if I get pissed off I will make a video with their 2 last performances and if someone comes with that crap they will only need to look and read.

Good idea

Either that, or just ignore it. Because you know exactly how the arguments will go and who the posters are

Yes I was talking about the Argentinian media reaction to him.

It's not just the goals that he scores, but even when he doesn't he creates more clear cut chances and half chances than anyone else. Even in games when Barça are struggling, he still makes the kind of passes that win games, so inevitably when his teammates don't capitalise on it, sure enough, Messi is usually criticised for his character. But come on.... he plays so much deeper than those he's compared to, and yet his goal-scoring and assist/chance creation ratio is off the charts. Even if Barça aren't at the races, and even if he himself isn't, there's always something he does in every game that could unlock it.

He was everything and everywhere tonight.

I always thought that what the old people said about Di Stefano being an all around player, taking the ball from the defenders and scoring on the other end, was just a romantic memory. With time I thought it could be real, now I know for sure, that's what Leo is doing for us.

Yes, the pass to Suarez for the pen for example (even if the decision was dodgy). Won't get talked about much, but he needed to pull it off perfectly for Denayer to miss it. If Suarez hadn't gone down, he still would have been in a great position to assist.

Yeah, he goes deep, makes plays and still has time and space to score golas too and it makes it look all so easy.
