Lionel Messi

By this logic why do we even bother posting on these forums

Well if you’re gonna claim such things back it up. I think it’d be really cool to have a proper ex pro on here.

His point is that one goal should not define a legacy.

One goal. One missed penalty and so on and so forth. The greatest of all time deliver in those big moments in my opinion. You can argue if it should or shouldn't but personally to me it does.

I believe Ronaldinho was more talented than Zidane but Zidane is the greater player specifically because he delivered in those moments.

So now we're supposed to back up our opinions with ... what exactly, qualifications? Why can't we accept different opinions instead?

You can have an opinion without declaring that you are an ex pro. So if you’re going to claim it, I’m going to ask you to back it up.

400th La Liga goal tonight vs Eibar. He's still only 31, so 500... Possible? Likely?

Apologies for the late reply Peyroteo, I've been very busy this week.

I don't want to reply every specific point as too much time has passed and because it might bring this tangent back to prominence in the thread again - which has irritated enough people already.

Anyway -

My first language isn't english, I thought a pass can be flashy even if the passer didn't mean for it to be flashy. Is that not possible? Maybe you can teach me, probably not the best word.

Your English is superb, regardless of whether it isn't your first language.

The word flashy is used to describe something that is ostentatiously attractive. So, describing a pass by a player as flashy means that the player's intention is not just to make the pass but also to draw attention to himself when doing it.

Calling Ronaldo a top 10 player of all time isn't a compliment anymore. You think I'm getting into this because of Ronaldo when it's the complete opposite, I get into the Ronaldo and Messi debates because of this.

I disagree. Placing any player in the top 10 of all time is a huge compliment. Just look at the company he's in!

Fans will always love the pretty dribbles and through balls over an intelligent run or a mismatch from an athletic point of view. They don't intuitively know one is more important than the other, that's impossible, it's just simpler to recognize the technical ability in those situations but its importance and effectiveness are impossible to quantify accurately from looking at it, it will depend on hundreds of different factors. There are big misconceptions as to the different ways players can impact the game and to the different ways teams can attack.

People who will generally have those discussions about football history in places like this generally have a close minded vision of what the sport is and how it should be played. They romanticize players, it's all about being a magician, or a genius, etc.. it's about having class, looking class and elegant on the ball, etc. that's why for many fans the greatest players ever have to fit into a certain mold. It's why we had so many people here arguing things like Modric being Madrid's most important player, that Isco should be the first name on Madrid's team sheet or that Benzema was making Ronaldo look better during the past couple of years. It all comes from a fundamental lack of understanding about the sport more than it comes from any bias.

All I say is this - it shouldn't be surprising that in a sport called FOOTball, people are always going to be more intuitively drawn to what a player can do with the ball at his feet over what he can do when the ball isn't at his feet.

And I think most fans with knowledge of the game do appreciate how important awareness and off the ball movement is. Again - it's just that most fans place it as secondary skill to what a player can do with the ball at his feet.

Ban everyone who mentions Ronaldo in here (here on). I thought this was strictly moderated?

Passes from Messi from this season so far

Jesus. If someone showed you that and told you it was highlights of a world class playmaker over a number of years you might be impressed. The fact that Messi has done that over the course of 6 months whilst being in the running for European golden boot when a lot of people are talking about his imminent decline is incredible. Best football player to ever live.

27 seemed too high, so I checked Wiki which gives 23 in 22.
27 in 27 is "true" if you use last seasons Copa matches. Maybe they made that mistake because he hasn't played in the Copa so far this season.

Messi has been mostly superb so far but La Liga itself is relatively weaker this season in comparison to previous years and that plays a part in above imo.

That's probably not correct. Assists weren't counted until sometimes this millenia. Bican scored over 800 goals, Pelé and Romario close to 800 and Puskas and Müller were over 700. If you just look at goals Messi and Ronaldo were on rate with Romario but the others were way higher.

Yeah true. I should've added "in the modern era" or something along those lines.

For Anyone wanting something to pass 8 minutes of time

What was his best game this season so far ? Off the top of my head i'd say Espanyol or Tottenham.

50th career hattrick. 36 goals in 35 games versus Sevilla.

(Gifs are GifLord's doing )

Aguero matched Shearer's PL hattrick record recently at 11... Messi has almost 5 times that

596 career goals in 701 games now. It also takes him to more career goals than Ronaldo having played 95 games less

Not a bad career really
