Lionel Messi

The thing is the 4-1 loss to PSG by Barcelona.

It's the type of result that didnt happen when Xavi & Iniesta were playing. Now it happens every season with Messi being seen with :nervous: this type of face at the end of big matches.

They made that team for me. Messi is a GOAT but he was very lucky to have played with the spanish world cup team during their full career. The spanish world cup team end up retiring and luckily for Messi he has aged to the number that people dont expect him to be able to play with the numbers or type of performance that would help Barcelona win a title or UCL. Just as they say Barcelona miss the old quality of players & managers in the team - they never say that he was lucky to play with that type of consistent group of players during the time he was at his peak.

I really want him to move to a different club like PSG or City and help them win the league and CL in a season. So he can shut me up like his supporters want me to do.

Tbh I think as much as xavi and iniesta were a big loss the bigger loss for messi was Dani alves, who was just about the only right back who could run the whole flank by himself and totally compensate for Messi's lack of defensive effort, I don't think there is another player who could replace what Alves gave them at right back really

I think the suggestion was Bruno is better for United's system.

I don't agree though, there isn't a system that has been invented yet where a manager would prefer starting Bruno over Messi.

In decline.

His monthly highlights are better than everyone else's yearly ones.

This has been the case with Messi pretty much every year, trophies or not. Even 2 years ago when he almost single handledly beat Liverpool with a 10/10 performance at Camp Nou and being the best rated barcelona player at Anfield, he was still getting called a choker and how he doesnt show up without Xavi and Iniesta, or in the big games (imagine saying out loud that Messi isnt a big game player).

No player in history has been held to such high standards as Messi. With him, doesnt matter what team is he surrounded with, doesnt matter if he scores or assists, doesnt matter if he breaks records, he needs to solo-beat every european giant on the way to the final and score on the final, if Barca loses on the way to the final then its on him, no matter how bad the team is.

People actually use big games where Messi didnt win as examples of why he isnt that good. As in there is a player in history that hasnt lost big games.

What is expected of Messi is actually ridiculous, and i think its a symptom of his greatness.

I agree there is been expectation on him to pull a 1986 Maradonna performance every big match and tournament. I think the connection to Maradonna is natural considering that Messi is considered his heir, but even Maradonna couldnt win every trophy year in and year out on his own. This kind mythical of player who has a 10/10 match performance in every major game doesn't exist and never has. I can remember reading a sports journalist saying that Messi is essentially what Maradonna would have been if he had been a La Mazia product. A player who has perfected playing the simple game to perfection and effiency ala Cryuff vision.

Messi is the better version of Maradona every game.

Well apart from the 1986 wc other than that mostly yes. I think if Maradonna had played in a great club team, his legacy would be even greater than it is. For me its a bit hard to say. Personally I think every one of the GOAT's have their own unique pro's and con's, and way of playing the game. I think If Maradonna had played in any of these previous great Barcelona or Madrid teams he would have shone just as much in his own way.

And he wouldn’t have had the shit kicked out of him at every turn.
Messi and others have been far more protected and that’s a good thing

So he did some statpadding against Huesca, the worst team in La Liga, but still some nice goals and a nice assist. For his worst season since he hit his prime, he's still been pretty good in 21.

It's the type of result that didnt happen when Modric & Kroos were playing with Ronaldo. Now it happens every season with Ronaldo being seen with :nervous: this type of face at the end of big matches.

They made that team for me. Ronaldo is an all time good player but he was very lucky to have played with the a Croatian world cup golden ball winner during the best years of their full career. fixed

But but but Ronaldo won with Scholes and Giggs as his central midfielders alongside Carrick, Anderson and Hargreaves.

It's not just reliant on Kroos and Modric as much as its heavily and I mean heavily reliant on Xavi and Iniesta.

Who is Hueseca by the way? This is also a problem I had with La Liga. Teams that I never heard of and are Messy destroyed by Messi. :)

Bit weird to focus on one area in the team given the obvious strength in the United team was a defence that was far better than Madrid or Barcelona have had...probably in their entire history?! It helped quite a bit, with 5 clean sheets in 7 knockout games in 2008. Somehow I don't think Ronaldo contributed to that. Try telling Sir Alex we didn't rely on our defence in that title, particularly the semis.

Thanks for the vid. My absolute favourite player of all time. He is practically walking majority of the time in that clip. Love him.

Barcelona who lost to Roma, PSG had Xavi and Iniesta. And Suarez. And Neymar. And Rakitic. And Alves, Pique etc. Barcelona who lost to Liverpool had Busquets, Pique, Alba and other serial winners. Yet it's somehow it's all Messi's fault despite him putting 3-4 clear chances on the platter to his teammates.

Just appreciate the guy for a few more seasons he's got left. Barcelona have really fecked him over by not giving him a competitive team to fight for the CL titles. So many moves break down because Griezmann and especially Dembele cannot finish to save their lives. They need someone like Haaland or Mbappe to be on the end of some of those moves.

Laporta will have busy summer. He needs to convince Messi to continue and needs to shift some of the deadwood for a proven goalscorer. Sell Griezmann + Dembele and get Haaland - that would be a very good summer for them.

You can pick the shittiest games in the CL for Barcelona in the period between Luis Enrique leaving and now, and even in that period, Messi has always made 3-5 key passes that should have resulted in goals scored and assists achieved.

dunno where it is, but someone said he wouldn't take Messi at United because he can't bring to the team what Bruno does:lol:

That's hardly saying Bruno is better to be fair.... but then again, I ain't searching for it.

Messi seems to playing like he's enjoying it again, probably been a while since his body language has looked this relaxed. Very likely going back to the 2014-15 season. Unsurprisingly he's flourishing to a higher level because of it. Pretty much Barca as a whole just had a feck it team talk after the 4-1 and told themselves, pressure off and enjoy it.

You put him on a team with a defence that doesn't get humilliated every time they play to a strong squad and he'll do just fine.

I think he's playing just the same as he was playing last year even after his whole transfer saga. Beggining of the season he was simply missing some chances, he was also hitting the post an odd number of times per game, plus the goalies pulled off some amazing saves against him.

I remember everyone thinking "its just a matter of time".

The rest of the team however, its clearly a level above the beggining of the season. Pedri, Ansu Fati, Mingueza, Araujo and to a lesser degree Illaix are injecting some much needed oxygen into the lungs of the club. They are the light at the end of the tunnel that we didnt have at the start of the season, we only had Ansu Fati.

Every piece is falling into place, but you are going to need, some strengh in the defence, a Yaya Touré and a Puyol kind of players.

Brüno is excellent at penalties to be fair.

 Only one of our greatest ever teams.

His shooting from outside the box seems to be better than ever recently.

In his worst season probably ever and he will probably finish with 30+ league goals and 10+ assists.

Mid 30's Messi may be the return of the classic 10 in Elite football. Barca just needs to find two prime Makeleles to play behind him

In last 3 seasons (including this) he has scored 25 league goals from outside the box.

Insane stat. His peak was so high that his declined standards are still better than any player in the world.

Even his last season which was considered part of his decline would still be better than a lot great players best season.

Yeah, its not just goals and assists, some of the passes which lead to easy assists for other players, that video was posted on twitter. It was amazing how big role he plays without getting assists.
