They've got this season's stats up for Barcelona and they basically confirm what a lot of us have been feeling. He's given up moving around a lot, 8km/game now, but that when he moves he's got his speed back (the fastest top speed of any of the Barca players) and the stat that really matters, he's either scoring or assisting the first goal in 75% of Barca's games.

Personally I think he's getting back to his best, albeit in a new role (that maybe acknowledges some physical weaknesses?). We wait and see how it pans out, but it could be a really interesting transformation.

Great to finally have those statistics. Where did you get the stats from?

With respect to moving around a lot players dont have to be constantly moving to be effective. If for example Messi walks 10 meters to one side and drags a defender across to cover him he has made space for himself from where he just came from. The key is his acceleration and feint to win that space when he goes for it. With his brilliant ball control once he gets a hint of space to recieve a ball then there isnt much defenders can do to stop him receiving. People often mistake a lack of constant movement with a lack of effectiveness.

The most complete player I have ever seen. Will tell my kids and grand kids about how special he was. (If I have kids in the future)

I still don't see how people can compare Ronaldo to him never mind actually call him better. There is no comparison to be made Messi is just at another level than any player I have ever seen.

Ronaldinho in his prime was probably the closest player to being as good as Messi that I can think of.

Loved Ronaldhinio. He was such an entertainer but Messi is conformably superior. He does everything Ronaldhinio did just without the trickery but with ridiculous goalscoring.

Surely to be the most complete player (or attacker) you'd need height, jumping, heading ability, strength, two feet, shot power on top of what Messi already has. Don't get me wrong, Messi is the most talented footballer ever in my eyes but as for the most complete player ever, it has to be the man who's name is already on the Ballon D'or this year.

Most complete is a bit meaningless anyway. No one cares whether a player is 'complete' until they're trying to argue that they're better than another player.

I can't find the originating site. With Google not using Spanish news sites anymore (due to a change in Spanish law) it's difficult to follow the trails at the moment.

This Marca article talks about it.

Cheers mate. Didn't know they stopped showing up on google too? Wow, that is some disheartening figures from Messi though. Zlatan set a record in being lazy pretty much when Guardiola had bullied him and froze him out of the team(according to Zlatan) and he went out and ran 6.08 km in 62 minutes - meaning Messi is now averaging a joke figure.

Zlatan was publicly slated by everybody and for good reasons for that performance as he didn't even try, so it is a bit shocking to see Messi is actually averaging even less.

The most notorious one for Messi was against Atletico in the CL QF defeat last year with a 6.8km.

The ones this season aren't as significant (to me) as the fact that he seems to have recovered his top speed and acceleration. He's getting enough done in his 8km to contribute, it's the rest of the Barca team who need to step up.

Messi with the ball at his feet in the final third is most likely the most dangerous thing ever in world football, but the reason why I still hold Zidane and, to a degree, Ronaldinho in higher regard is their influence all over the pitch. At times with those two it seemed like there were two or three of them on the pitch.

Always difficult to talk about Messi, he's clearly one of the very best in the world even if he's among the laziest footballers I have ever seen going off this season. I've said that before this season after almost every game but I didn't think he'd average less than Zlatan's historically lazy performance - that is incredible.

Hopefully he returns to his electric days, it would be great to see him performing near his peak levels again.

The man is a God. Only Ronaldo Phenomenon is comparable in my lifetime. Never in a million years am I having that Cristiano is better, personally. Credit to his goalscoring exploits, as it is this that has even made it a discussion in my opinion, otherwise it would be black and white. Messi puts up similar numbers without adopting an 'I must score in every game and beat every record, so I will always shoot' style. He just plays his natural game, and puts up ridiculous numbers because he is that fecking good.

The best thing Ronaldo could do was to turn the debate into a goalscoring one, which he has successfully done in recent years. Now, the best seems to be judged on who scores the most or whose team wins the League or CL.

I agree with this completely.

Messi has scored 23 goals for Barcelona this season (La Liga 15, UCL 8):
Right foot: 11
Left foot: 10
Head: 2

Strange that he is mistaken to be very one-footed. His right-footed chip goals are famous I thought.

In terms of "shot power":

He's also the "strongest" player in footballing terms in my opinion. Optically he might not have huge muscle masses and consequently he might not win a fist fight against Ronaldo but on the pitch in terms of staying on his feet and evading challenges which is the relevant strength attribute for a footballer he's the #1. Who else does this?

Genius. He's so obviously the best on the planet. Who else does shit like that?

That is your opinion but could Ronaldo play a CM if he was asked to do so and create for his team? Messi can play any where in midfield and attack and still get motm awards.

Ronaldo is a pure goal scorer he lacks a lot of things in his game. Messi can play in tight spaces still hold onto the ball and score from out of no where. Ronaldo's best attribute is his finishing. If you think Ronaldo is the most complete player ever you really need to stop watching football.

Ronaldo's influence on games over 90 minutes is just non existent at times, the guy has played in 3 CL finals and had poor games in all of them even though he scored in his first final for United he was no where to be seen on the pitch.

Its the speed in which his adjusts his feet to keep his balance. His balance is outrageous.

As I said above, I believe Messi is undoubtedly the better of the two, but I think your statement above is false. Ronaldo played very well in his first CL Final for us. In addition to his goal, I remember him running Essien ragged, who played right back.

Just a little sidenote on that, Messi's fairly short at 5'7" but he weights 148lbs. For comparison, at his peak, George Best was around 5'9" and 143lbs.

No one ever thought George was a lightweight. In fact in most reminiscences he'll be the player who'd happily take any alleged hardman on, play on muddy pitches with waterlogged footballs, and still come out on top. Messi might not be very tall but he's certainly physically strong enough and tough enough to take almost anyone on and that "low centre of gravity" really does help rather than hinder when he's in a tight spot.

He creates plenty of chances and gets many assists for someone who is just a "pure goalscorer".

He was far from poor in his first CL final and dominated Essien in that game both physically in the air and several times in one on ones. His first half in particular was great beating Essien many times in the air and on the ground, scoring a goal as well as providing a great cross to Tevez which if he scored would have made the score 2-0. Essien required assistance from Joe Cole and Ballack in the second half due to the torrid time Ronaldo gave him in the first half but it still didn't stop Ronaldo from beating him beating him one-on-one on a few occasions and from providing some dangerous crosses and he also took advantage of the amount of attention Chelsea were giving him by drawing players in and then releasing Evra down the left in space. His link-up play with Evra was great in that game, finding him in space quite a few times so that he could provide a cross or cutback. His game was certainly a far cry from "poor" as you put it.
Ok so 1 decent game and 2 mediocre games in 3 finals, Certainly u expect more from a player who people are calling better than Messi?

Who says this? Perhaps you are confusing them saying "he had a better year than Messi" with "Ronaldo is better outright than Messi". Ronaldo has done the business in the back-end of the CL on many occasions and does not have anything to prove in that regard. Ronaldo has 11 goals in 14 games in the Quarter-finals and 9 goals in 14 games in the semi-finals in addition to strong performances. It would be very harsh to disregard all that and to only judge his performances in the CL by his performances in the final.
and u are judging Ronaldo purely on goals, there is a lot more to games than scoring a few tap ins and penalties.

(and a player you seem obsessed about comparing Ronaldo to).
Upsessed? I didn't even start this debate i came in here to only talk of Messi and someone else quoted me talking about Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a poacher upsessed with scoring goals and always wants the spotlight. His whole team is built around him to get goals he can go invisible for large parts of games and contribute very little to his team.

Thats my opinion on Ronaldo and it wont change i have watched enough of him to see how he plays. When things dont go his way he starts to throw his toys out of the pram and blames his team mates. He is a very good player but not on Messi's level and never will be.

Ronaldo does have the talent to change games on his own but i have barely seen him do that in the last few years, the first goal against Liverpool is an example of this, he started the play and finished it very well it was a really insane goal but like i said i haven't seen enough of that from him and i think people over rate him because he has an amazing goal scoring record.

Are we signing the little genius? Come on Woody

He needs £500m to be tempted to leave Barcelona according to the sun. Not sure how that works out in terms of wages, 5 year contract so that's almost £2m pound per week.

I mean if you are going to make up a figure at least make it reasonable.

Somehow we fail to score on many 1-on-1 chances. Happened a lot this season.

That's why I find it pointless comparing any footballer I've seen to him. Not only has he broken records with his goal scoring, and been on a different level as a ribbler, his passing is just ridiculous. Cant think of a better creative passer in the game.

He is/was about 5 assist away from being the all time La Liga top assister too. He assists at a rate thats just as incredible as his scoring. Weird thing is, none of the pundits ever seem to talk about his assisting...

It's not just assists though. It's the quality of passing. He pulls off these ridiculous passes, bang-on the perfect spot time after time. You don't even need stats to see it. It's like that pass he played at the world cup.
