Indeed. For me the thing that sums up the difference between Ronaldinho and Messi is Ronaldinho's goal vs an in form Cech at Stamford Bridge. I'm convinced only Fat Ronaldo in his hey day or Maradona could pull such a thing off.

Ronaldinho in his prime was a genius no doubt. Messi has 4 or 5 years before he is at his peak years as a footballer and i wouldn't be surprised if he pulls something spectacular out in a champions league match in the coming months.

Honestly I'd be shocked if he did. Because Messi unlike Ronaldinho, is not the master of the unpredictable. That goal was out of the blue, stemming from pure arrogance, mixed with sheer confidence, genius and class. Ronaldinho in that moment showed will he was miles better than all else at that point in time. It was an incredibly cheeky thing to do. Yet he totally meant it.

The last person I saw do something similar was one on one master, the Phenomenon himself.

Anyway Messi is genius in his own right. He will probably score a late goal, in the style Maradona scored England, in the later stages of the champion league, at a do or die moment, when Barca are on the ropes and need it most. On this form.

You are probably right, but i would like to say maybe Ibra could also pull that off.

Exactly chief!

There was one moment of Ronaldo in his Barca day's when he had the ball in front of him, he must of been say 25-yards away from goal he gets tackled from behind (Not a nasty challenge) but he gets sent to the floor. What he did next was incredible, he flipped over to get his back onto the floor then the ball rolled to his foot, he flicked it up and instantly got back to his feet, he beat the the man closest to him and sidefooted a finish past the keeper which was absolute quality.

He truly was the phenomenon.

Yes. I once rubbed my eyes during a late night match. For I thought I had dreamed a goal Ronaldo had scored. Till I saw the replay. It's such a pity about the injuries.

True, that's the type of player he is in relation to Ronaldinho and Ronaldo though. Messi suprises people from time to time, when he choses to chip the keeper like against Mexico, that was special. He almost scored what will probably be a trade mark goal, leaving 3 or 4 defenders for dead and then finish it off against Atletico.

In this form he is frightening because he not only has that ability ala THE Ronaldo but he willl also continue to be very creative in his play. Running a game with his actions.

Yeah Ronaldhino was a real entertainer. But personally it was his ability with the ball that I loved. The sometimes superfluous flicks and stuff (something the old C. Ronaldo was often guilty of) never really impressed me.

For me Messi's ability to blitz past and through people is the greatest sight in football since F. Ronaldo in his prime.

True to a large extent, the comparison with Fat Ronaldo in his Barcelona and Inter Milan days becomes inevitable now. Its not the stats on goals alone but with the authority both can dominate and blow away an opposition, classes them apart from the rest. Both Fat Ronaldo in his prime and Messi (now) are predictable, defenders knew what exactly they would do but still cannot contain them.

Can remember well Goofy Ronaldo's days at Barca, he was a goal machine, but even when Barca had a great team then, Spanish defenders were able cope with him predominantly throughout a match. He provided mesmersing moments in every match that lasted only for only few seconds scoring some breathtaking goals. ..t'was like sex overall a 10 second end product, nothing more or anything less. If some youtube cretin stacks up all his Barca goals one above other in a four minute compliation it would appear he was out of the world yet he certainly wasn't and played his best football of his career only during his first season in Italy. At Inter he never scored some great goals like his Barca days but played in a free role in the attack and his overall impact in a game was phenomenal, he took his attacking game to the next level after his first few months in Italy. Remember Ronaldo against Scotland in the 98 WC, he did everything, ran them ragged but he didnt score, no one was bothered as he was a joy to watch on the pitch .. sums up exactly what he did in Italy.

As for Messi 2004-2008, barring injuries goal for goal he can match Fat Ronaldo's great goals before 97-98, but he's nowhere a clinical finisher like Ronaldo whilst Messi's vision and overall ability to influence a match was better than Ronaldo.

This season he has scored 19 goals from 20 , his goals rate this season so far is statistically up there with Goofy Ronaldo's count (96-97) even if we choose to ignore his assists or the damage he does even when he dosent score goals or create one. Right now he comes closer to Ronaldo of the Inter Milan days and an injury free 2009 he should surpass the likes of Laudrup, Ronaldo or Zidane, whether he surpasses their legacy or not remains to be seen but from media and fans alike he would be rated at a higher echleon. If he follows it up with the blinder of a world cp comparisons with Pele or Maradona would become inevitable, his fanboys and the media would go bonkers although he isnt as much talented.

I seem to remember thinking at the time: Wow, what happened there.

I dont have a connection fast enough for YouTube ... did he toe-poke the ball or was it hit with the top of his foot. If it was the latter it goes to show he can generate incredible power in a shot with such short lift.

The genius of the man

Fecking hell ,Carvalho is hypnotized by the samba  ,genius goal really

The part where it say's he's a genius.

Great video but I prefer to watch from all the 103 goals (not sure about the exact number of goals) that Ronaldo scored in Madrid, you get to see what is the word "finishing" in its true meaning, some goals seem to be so easy ,a true master and my all time favorite player.

It's not about Messi reaching his full potential ,as the Chief explained , some players have that unpredictability about their game and Messi is predictable (it doesn't you can stop him ). That goal from Ronaldinho is pure, unpredictability . I remember watching the match with my bro who is a fierce Barca supporter, he was jumping around like crazy after this

Yeah I know what you mean mate, he was still a world class player when he played for Madrid. Some of goals he scored for them was unreal.

I remember a thread being made a couple of months back of a piece of skill Messi did past an opponent saying it was 'Insane, amazing'

Ronaldo did that same skill past a goalkeeper

Specially against Valencia ,I don't know what was his beef with them but he sure scored some unbelievable goals against them. Fooling around Canizares and his defenders . What also highly impressed me is the variety of goals and how he has mastered the low but very powerful shots with both feet.

Indeed, it's the same with Ronaldinho,Messi and Zidane for instance. Sometimes you just sit back and enjoy the show . I think there is Messi and maybe Zlatan in the current football who have that magic and to a much lesser extent.

You are probably right, but i would like to say maybe Ibra could also pull that off.

Major difference is that ronaldinho did this so often against the big teams. Ibrahimovic has done little of note on the big stage.

Ronaldinho's ability to decide the big games when everybody was watching is in large part the reason he was so revered. One of the very few who didn't just play well against the best, but seemed to pull out his very best on such occasions.

Messi is on a completely different planet. He will be up there with Maradona, Pele, Cruyff and co but if he keeps going the way he is and stays injury free he could go down as better than Maradona, that's how good this lad is.

Are you his agent?

I actually think you spend more time following Messi than you do United!

I love how you seem to be so sure.

I know, i've been in many a debate about how good i think he is, or how others think he isn't all that. I think he's proving i'm right with every performance this season. Even last night when he came on for 20mins (after the fans chanting for him everytime he warmed up) he had 3 peices of play that get people out their seats.

More and more people are coming around to the idea that maybe Messi really is all that and whilst it's no news to me it does give me some mild satisfaction.

I really appreciate his talent but like the C.Ronaldo comparisons with the greats of the game (a few months ago and when he was on top form) I'm on the wait and see mode.I'd love for him to reach these heights but right now it's really hard to tell and it'll be kinda unfair on him to compare him with them.

Are you sure you're not talking about Ronaldo?

The signs have been there for Messi from the beginning. I've been of the opinion that he's been the best footballer for a few years already. Sure Ronaldo had a remarkable season last year and deserved everything he got, it was some feat he achieved and he played a major role in the success of the club.

Messi just does things that no other player in the world can do and he makes it look easy. Last night he picked the ball up 3 times. First time he beat 2 or 3 and had a goal bound shot charged down. 2nd time he picked it on the right and proceded to play first touch one twos with his team mates until he spread the play across to the left wing, third time he scooped it over his opponent on the left to his team mate, got the ball back and beat a man (i don't know how he still had the ball) then went for a one two on the edge of the area with Bojan but the kid moved too early towards goal, or Messi underhit the pass. But with each move you see different aspects and different brilliance.

It is a privilege to watch him.

A privilege for you maybe. I couldn't care less for now, you must really LOVE him.

Fair enough, many people have been privileged to watch great players, Pele, Maradona, George Best, Cruyff etc and they have probably been quite excited to see such talent. I guess i have a bit of that with Messi, i'm definetely premature in my excitement but currently he is a joy to watch like no other.

Keep dreaming. He is yet to even reach the level of Ronaldinho at his best.
So he doesn't have much chance of becoming better than Maradona.

Yet to even do that eh?

He's only bloody 21!!!

At this stage of his career, Ronaldinho was still at Gremio. About to join PSG, but supposedly considering the option of moving to St Mirran: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/archive/scotland/news/2001/0330/20010330smfcsronaldinho.html. He had played only a handful of games for Brazil, none yet in a World Cup

Maradona was still in Argentina, and had yet to feature in a World Cup for his national side

Give the guy a chance, and stop putting limits on how good he can be :nono:

I'm interested to see how good he'll become because he's got a fantastic ability.
I hope he never get the same sort of injuries Ronaldo in his career cause I wonder what he'd have achieved by now.
