And he's one of the biggest cheats around (Busquets not Dylan). As despicable in his behavior as he is talented.

I just wonder in some strange culmination factors colliding together, if he were to to ever leave, which team would he be best suited to?

If Messi where ever to leave Barcelona, for whatever reason, I wonder who he would join.

In football, much like life itself, you just never know ....

Manchester United.

You couldn't score 60 goals in a PES game all season!

He makes a mockery of life and art.

60 goals alone is insane and ridiculous, but what's even more ridiculous is that he's still got a portion of the season to go. He's not finished yet.

Actually, what's ridiculous is that he's still got a portion of the season to go but he's yet been able to score 60 goals. If he didn't have a good portion of the season left something would be very wrong.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I said.

He'll get more than 70 for sure  He has probably 11 games to go, 10 minimum (11 if they make the final) and he scores more than a goal a game so I'm guessing he'll end up close to 75  He's really just taking the piss out of the rest of Europe

His most amazing feat for me is that he's been able to score all these bloody goals without losing any part of his creativity, which have probably improved if anything. He has created the most chances in the league and champions league this season, slightly edging out Ozil.

If Messi was English, we'd have declared ourselves winners of every tournament for the next 20 years.

Messi and Bob Dylan? Can this thread get any better?

No, you guys would turn him into a scapegoat every time you fail to win.

pre-Guardiola era (2004-2008): 110 apps (84 starts), 42 goals, 19 assists

2008/09: 51 apps (41 starts), 38 goals, 18 assists
2009/10: 53 apps (46 starts), 47 goals, 11 assists
2010/11: 55 apps (48 starts), 53 goals, 24 assists
2011/12: 50 apps (47 starts), 60 goals, 24 assists *

Guardiola era (2008-present): 209 apps (182 starts), 198 goals, 77 assists

2012/13: ???

Seems unlikely he'll better whatever he finishes at this season... but then again, who would bet against it??

It'll be hard for him to better it, but he could easily match it at the very least. There's no reason the suggest that he can't.

If he could match it at the very least....surely it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to beat it -_-

So there have been players in the game who have matched and exceeded his goals like Muller

Has any player scored so many whilst being the most creative player in europe too?

Can't really say because there was no measure of creativity before the late 90s, I'd imagine Di Stefano would be able to make a good case for that though. And Pele. And Cruyff. Best too. And most of the greats really, that's why they're the greats I suppose! Highly unlikely there's any way of proving that but if you just look at their all-round contribution in the build-up it's hard to believe they weren't right up there with the best creators around, particularly given people like Di Stefano played in a deeper role thus had more opportunities to create.

There may have been at some point, but there certainly hasn't been in recent memory. That's what makes him such a great player. To see someone who can have the overall impact on the game he does but still score so many goals is incredible.

There may be players who did it at the top back around the 50s/60s, however football games were generally higher scoring back then. The game has changed now and 60 goals in a season is just an incredible feat.

That's true to an extent, but take Di Stefano for example - scored 44 in 44 overall and 31 in 30 in the league in '57, Madrid scored 74 goals in 30 league games or 2.5 goals per game. In the English first division in the same year the gpg average for us (the champions) was 1.9, as it was for Milan in Serie A (league winners and EC finalists) The gpg average for La Liga this season is 2.8 while Madrid average 3.2.

I think back in those days it was just incredibly different across the leagues really. The English league pre-war was certainly known for having high goalscoring, and I think that stayed the same for a while post war.

Ahead of tonight's game, worth noting this fact again:

Barcelona's Lionel Messi reached another milestone in his amazing career on Saturday when he became the first player to score 60 goals in a season in European top-flight football in almost 40 years.

Absolutely unbelievable. Still has at least 10 games left as well, so could feasibly hit 70-75.

To think how whipped up into a frenzy we were when Ronaldo hit 42 goals in 2008. Messi could almost double that incredible achievement.
