Kick into gear? The two most impressive league campaigns in the Spanish league history (pointswise anyway) and both happened last season. I can't remember a more distinguished runner-up than Real last season.

Everyone is banking on Mourinho working wonders at Real, but fail to realise Pellegrino was in actual fact working wonders in the league already last season. He'll have an exceedingly tough job simply matching Pellegrino's accomplishments in the league, let alone improving on it. Think it far more likely that Real will win the league due to barca dropping their level than Real upping theirs.

Though if he restores their European pedigree he'll definitely buy himself a longer lifeline, if he doesn't win the league.

Just saw both of his goals at half time, he might be the best finisher in the world right now, his second goal was effortless after orgasmic link up play.

His first was a dink from a wonderful Xavi through ball. How many times are we going to see Messi feeding off Xavi's balls?

It has become an iconic image

Really?

Xavi-Messi: It would interesting to know how many goals Messi has scored thanks to Xavi.
He's by far the best finisher in the world, his composure in front of goal is frightening.

I could have sworn the season Barca won their treble Xavi had something like 43 assist... and Messi was their highest scorer

Fabulous second from him. Terrific assist for Alves' goal. Two goals, a penalty gotten (and missed) and two assists. If he keeps this up, this season will be ridiculous.

Probably. His shots-to-goals ratio was only matched by Pedro last season.

Just check out the finish, we all knew what was going to happen when he gets in that position

check out the celebration, I think Messi is really starting to realise that he's a great distance better than every other player in world football.

This sort of confidence just doesn't bode well for all compeititors.

Nah, without Xavi he wouldn't score half of his goals.I don't believe he's out there on his own

You have to realize that if Barca didn't have Xavi they would have someone else. Iniesta, Fabregas in a year and who knows what other youth coming through.

Every player needs service, even Messi yet Messi has started scoring so many because his movement has improved so much from playing higher up the pitch. Xavi and others understand this and play the ball when he makes the move and then it's just too easy for him.

He wouldnt score AS many, but to say he wouldnt score half is wide of the mark.

For example, one pass from Xavi last night created a messi goal, the 2nd goal was all him, the penalty was down to him and his assist for Alves was all him. Without a great team around him he wouldnt be as good, obviously but even so he'd still be head and shoulders the best around.

Even then the whole argument for "take away the team" is completely rediculous. When do the worlds best players ever not play in the best teams?

Just got back from Hackney Marshes. So many stupid idiots. He came off the helicoptor with his gear, then 2 people ran towards him then about 30 people surrunded him and wouldn't back off. Security was crap and the public just did not listen to them. He was going to play on the same pitch that I play on! Would've been surreal, but people just would not back off him, so in the end a security van came and they took him elsewhere. Proper gutted.

That penalty miss reminded me of Berbatov's against Everton. Tried to be too cool and roll it in but the keeper didn't dive early so it looked worse than it was.
Tried to hesitate with his run-up to make the goalie move to one side (to pass it into the other), but he didn't, that's why the penalty looked poor.

what did they really expct though?

This isn't Eboue who has touched down, I'm glad I didn't go then if it went down poor

It was stupidly organised. Our section had security blocking us, but the other side was completely empty. And when 1 person runs, then every other person wants to seize their chance too. But even when they were saying "Messi will be taken away if you don't back off", nobody moved. Idiots. Would've been amazing to see him play like 5 feet away! Arghhhh!
