Lionel Messi | PSG Watch

Agree with you on this, he actually is playing at the same level now for PSG that he has been for the Argentine national side throughout his PSG tenure IMO which was always evidence for me that something wasn't right on/ off the pitch there under Poch.

I also think that PSG will eventually get knocked out of the CL because they don't work hard enough and they allow too many shots/corners against some of the worst teams in France (great for betting) so they will probably be put to the sword fairly quickly when they come across more clinical sides.

This will be used against Messi as evidence he is "washed" (as the kids say) even though it will be something that will probably always haunt PSG due to the lack of competition in their league.

I'm just happy to see him enjoying his football again after a rough year.
Oh, most definitely. Even though Ruiz, Vitinha and Verrati is a solid midfield and a huge improvement from last year, the side has familiar flaws and is way too open and exposed on the counter even now. There have been way too many teams who have been able to cut through them with ease and I feel Ramos is quite the weak link in defense. Even if they do exit early though, you can be assured the games will be entertaining.

Well, for one, he's not playing RW this season at all. He's also an older player, so having a good pre-season is key to get him started on the right note, which he had this season. Then you have our midfield which is far more capable of handling the play than when we had only Veratti capable of dictating play from there. Between Vitinha and Ruiz, there is more creativity from midfield which alleviates pressure from him so he can focus his energy on the last third.

He's also acclimated now, which is off-the-field stuff but it often can translate to better performances on it.
The lack of constant niggling injuries also has been of great help and he's been able to be more consistent in his performances. He also seems a lot more involved in play this year compared to last year where he seemed to be curiously sidelined.

Honestly, I'm at a stage where I find it hard to get into these debates about what level he's doing it at or versus whom. After last season, which felt like an end of career season, it's just been a privilege to see him enjoy his career again and score the goals he wasn't last year. I couldn't care less what he does in the CL knockout games, I'm just happy he's playing like a top player again.

Yeah his goal and assist highlights for this season alone are awesome and closer to what I thought his last season would be like. I want him to end his career on a high and I wonder if this is the one.

The fact that you support Madrid makes your opinion irrelevant. Keep crying.

Crying about what ? He is the main reason my team eliminated PSG last season. He was atrocious and missed the crucial penalty. Long may he reign.

Yep, if he were to retire at the end of this season, if he goes out playing how he has, I'll be delighted.

The 3-4-2-1 which allows Neymar and Messi (and Mbappe, despite his moaning) to shine seems so obvious. And not just in hindsight, I thought the signing of Hakimi was with an eye to using wingbacks. Is there some reason I was missing that you couldn't have played it last year?

Wrong, Pele, Messi and CR7 are the GOATs without question. CR7 is way ahead of Maradona. Cristiano's peak was much higher. He had much more longevity and consistency. And many more achievements. How can you put for a guy who won 5 UCL being top scorer and protagonist, the highest scorer in official games history BELOW Maradona??? This is pointless. The only thing Maradona was superior at was dribbling.

Ramos was never fit last season, so we didn't really have 3 CBs to even line up together, at least not 3 good enough to handle it. Even this season, we're in desperate need of another CB and they tried very hard but failed to get Skriniar so we could have some depth. Fortunately, Ramos has been holding up and Kimpembe is coming back from injury. They are still very vulnerable at the back though, and we're essentially banking on outscoring the other team. We also are completely incapable of dealing with any well-placed cross in the box, so there's still a lot of work to do.

There were no reasons. It was one of Tuchel's main and most balanced organization even though he didn't had the idea squad. Most of the main players were used to it and it was a good fit for the new signings. But then again keep in mind that for a while Pochettino was using Messi as touchline hugging winger, he wasn't using common sense.

Is this setup entirely to play the forward trio in each match?

I’m not so sure about that, it seemed very close to me until 1986. If Zico had won the world cup in 82 maybe the history books would look differently.

Here are some stats for the South American player of the year.

1976 zico 2nd
1977 zico first
1978 both not top 3
1979 both not top 3
1980 zico 2nd, Maradona 1st
1981 zico first, Maradona 2nd
1982 zico first, maradona 3rd
1983 both not top 3
1984 both not top 3
1985 both not top 3 and zico‘s career more or less finished here

So during the time they both had a career zico seemed to be seen as a better player. Statistically he was by far the better player in fact, he scored goals for fun, easily totaling yearly tallies of 30 to 60 goals for a period of 10 years.
Even in the hardest league in the world at the time Serie A he scored 19 goals in his first season, then his career got plagued by injuries. The tally of 19 goals in the serie a was never bettered by Maradona.
Other than stats he was just as Maradona an excellent playmaker and dead ball specialist.
With a bit more luck in 82 and less injuries in Italy the story light have been different.
For me the difference between the two is everything but clear cut.

I can make the same case for Platini who absolutely dominated the European championship of 1984 but for some reason this gets forgotten maybe because Platini didn’t score an outrageous solo goal…He also outscored Maradona in the serie A and was an excellent playmaker.

In retrospect Maradona would have won just 2 ballon d’ors with Platini still having won 3 so also here the difference is definitely not very clear.

Things looked pretty even between Maradona,Zico, and Platini until 1986...the thing that changed everything was Maradona winning the WC in 1986 scoring that majestic goal against the english when the Malvinas incident with England was fresh.

My father watched the 3 of them, and he told me that things were very close until Maradona won the WC and scored that unreal goal against England.
And obviously as the other 2 never even reached WC final (the pinnacle of football back then), the choice was already sealed.

I can get behind that. It must have been a great time for a football fan.
But still, it is incredible how much luck is involved.
You never know what would have happened if the hand of God goal didn’t happen or if the majestic Brazil 1982 had won the wc or last but not least if Platini reached the final on either the wc 82 or 86.

But yeah for me the discussion is closed here. They’re all 3 legends.

I agree ... Messi's career can be summarized as:

You do realise that Messi had a very difficult debut season due to multiple factors, he was struggling throughout and he was bound to struggle in that match as well. It was a one off below par season due to unique circumstances. Anyway, you being a Madrid fan obviously dislike him and are salty now that he is back to his best and grabbing headlines while your favourite goalpoacher warms the bench and creates unparalleled drama refusing to accept that he is washed.

That may have been the case interms of their careers but it was always obvious that Maradona was easily the most talented out of the 3.

Zico‘s time was actually before Maradona’s and his peak was during the 1982 world cup whereas Maradona’swas at 1986 wc. However, even if Brazil had won in 1982, his individual performances in that tournament were nowhere near Maradona’s of 1986. But interms of career, take away Mexico 86 and Maradona would fall into the group with Platini and Zico.

Platini's game was about passing and scoring. He lacked the flair of Zico and Maradona. In a different way, he was like Cristiano (who is/was more of a goalscorer and supremely athletic) ; a great career with individual and team success without having the on- the-ball genius of Maradona/Zico.

Shape up or you won't last here too long

Yep, if he were to retire at the end of this season, if he goes out playing how he has, I'll be delighted.

I agree. Obviously, if Argentina get all the luck in the world and everything works in their favor, a world cup win would be the only thing he cares about, and he'll likely bow out immediately.
Chances are that won't happen, and while everyone would be happy with him hanging up his boots after this season (playing the way he is), I think he should get the 1- total career trophies record (he only trails by 2) and 2- put the total goal production record out of everybody's reach. He's 77 ahead of the next active guy, and it's not impossible to reach, yet.

Messi has been below par against Madrid for more than half a decade now  . As for CR, I couldn't care less, he is finished, and should join some MSL team.

Yeah, Zico is contention for the most underrated player in history, in my opinion. There are very few that have this combination of goal output, individual skill (dribbling, technique, etc.) and playmaking. If I'm not mistaken he scored over 600 goals in his career and I don't think many are aware of that.

If I'm not mistaken he scored over 600 goals in his career and I don't think many are aware of that.

because people in general don't really place much weight on those regional league stats. and his club career is fairly... odd for a player of such quality.

Yeah if there is anything that Messi will be remembered for its being a tap in merchant.

What’s the biggest difference between Messi this year and last? Just settled into a more functional team, or has he adapted a lot to his teammates?

More settled, proper pre-season, got over the shock of being forced out of Barcelona (he never wanted to leave). Better coach. Poch was terrible. No coincidence that Neymar is much better this season as well.

I think he's just really hungry to win another coveted Ligue Un title. He's got a taste for winning proper trophies now, and wants more.

All false

doubt it. when you score that much and it goes fairly under the radar, it's likely to do with competition itself. and from my experience, vast majority of fans simply don't care for it. it would be completely different story if he was scoring 60 per season in Brazilian league.

Not sure where else to post. Do you think the CL game vs Haifa will feature Messi / Neymar / Mbappe?

In Paris with work and could swerve an evening to watch the game if it won't be the reserves?
Heh, I went, got to see goals from all three. Amazing night, amazing atmosphere.

Messi is football's Mr Satan according to your idea

Goes fairly under the radar? Where?

hmmm, I'd actually say in most common places, even caf. vast majority of fans will obviously know Zico's profile, basic info and the fact he was incredible free kick taker, but would they associate him with a 65 league goals per season player for example? something neither Messi, Ronaldo, Puskas, Muller or Pele were capable of? nah, it would be obvious that such fact require a bit of context and that context is of course the regional league. I read a lot so I know a bit about football's ancient history, but I don't think plenty of fans do the same and I genuinely think his 600+ goals in about 700 games isn't really a common knowledge among fans who aren't from Brazil. you're either overrating your average football fan or it's me who's underrating them.
