Lionel Messi - Performances

Dismantled Colombia tonight, another perfect free kick and his work ethic to set up the 3rd goal was exemplary, just wish he'd do that a bit more as he's proved he can close players down well.

Don't like to see him waving another imaginary card trying to get a player booked though, he does it too often.

He is by far and away the best player in the world on current form.

Interesting graphic

Not one United player on the list. That's depressing. Van Persie in 12/13 was the last player to score 20+ goals for us in one season.

Memorable performance and inspiring pressy at the close of the match as well. We are lucky
He is obviously the best player in the world. Dont get me wrong, Ronaldo is a champion footballer but i just feel like bashing my head on a cupboard over and over when i have mates telling me Ronaldo is the best in the world and Messi isn't even top three.

There's no point really to wading into that 'debate', deep down everyone knows - even CR

The words genius and great are thrown around too often these days but he is definitely one worthy of the praise. No player can compare to him in the modern game he's just a playstation player and unplayable when he is at his best.

The 3rd goal was just  It always enchants me when an attacking player wins the ball high up, then scores a goal or creates a perfect opportunity. Di Maria tried his best to feck up though

Makes everyone else look like children, has to be the GOAT.

the free-kick was perfect and two assists (could have been more if others finished chances)

Alternatively you could say he was made to look like a child last week, so he can't be the "GOAT". Both are a little silly.

In terms of consistency I think so, 3 finals for Argentina in 3 competitions? Argentina are having a tough time qualifying but look at the results, with and without.

Without
With

Argentina 0-2 Ecuador (Without Messi)
Paraguay 0-0 Argentina (Without Messi)
Argentina 1-1 Brazil (Without Messi)
Colombia 0-1 Argentina (Without Messi)
Chile 1-2 Argentina (With Messi)
Argentina 2-0 Bolivia (With Messi)
Argentina 1-0 Uruguay (With Messi)
Venezuela 2-2 Argentina (Without Messi)
Perú 2-2 Argentina (Without Messi)
Argentina 0-1 Paraguay (Without Messi)
Brazil 3-0 Argentina (With Messi)
Argentina 3-0 Colombia (With Messi)

7 Games without Messi average - 1 point per game.
5 Games with Messi Average - 2 points per game.

If Messi was fit during those other games they probably would have qualified by now.

Brazil dismantled Argentina no doubt, but there are 10 players in that squad too and on the day Brazil were just too good, Coutinho is probably the best midfielder in the world now and I don't think any team would have stopped Brazil. Sometimes teams go on the field and it clicks, it works some players have off-days but when Messi doesn't play Argentina struggle and that game against Brazil nobody got into the game really.

Over the course of his career I'd say GOAT because it's not often there's not a moment of brilliance in a game, but its subjective of course.

Great story if true. Really enjoy these snippets from players looking out for others financially. Shows that they're grounded people beneath it all.

There are lots of stories that define Messi as a person. Most of them are in spanish.

One comes from keeper Mariano Andujar, around minute 7

It's in spanish though, so basically he says: " We played a couple friendlies, against Arabia & other teams. Not much people know this. In these kind of friendlies, the FA receives money. But if Messi plays, there's extra money. Well, he went on purpose to ask for that money. To share it with us. He talked to the management and said 'This part is for me'. Then he came and say 'this is for us, guys'. That's what a leader represents for the group. He won't talk about it, for sure"

Then there's a very famous journalist who always cover the matches from the field (dunno how to say it properly, he's not in the booth, he's near the benchs covering everything from there) who's called Titi Fernandez.

The journalist asks him "Has Messi ever done something to you that surprised you?". And he goes with the story: To put you in context, during the 2014 WC, which he went to cover, his daughter died in a car accident in Brazil. Obviuously he didn't finish his job. Then he organized a movement asking for justice.

"We wanted to honour Sole. She wanted to be in the WC Final, so we went there even if we didn't want to go. We made some shirts with Sole's face. Messi had a gesture with us, taking a picture holding the shirt. And then another gesture it was....well, Messi is a great guy you know. It's difficult to be Messi, but Messi is a great guy. He saved my life! We were in Venezuela During the Copa America -2007-. And some venezuelans invited me to play golf, a saturday in the morning. I had everything prepeared with my job: I arranged interviews with Heinze and Tevez. I had two transmissions with Channel 13, during that saturday. I finished playing golf, everything was calculated. But there was a crash in the highway. Traffic wasn't moving. The producers were calling me and I could do nothing. Well, what happened? It became late, Tevez and Heinze went home to take a nap. I was devastated. I said to the producers "Guys, if I can't fix this it's done. I quit". There were two transmissions and they were about the National Team!. So there was a guy called Pagano, who worked for Adidas, and He notices I'm worried. He asks me "Whats up?" I explained everything to him. Told him I needed somebody, otherwise I'm dead. He says "Well I'm chatting with Messi". So he writes to Messi about my problem and asks him if He could help. Messi was bored as hell in the bedroom. "If he pays the coke...". A truck full of Coca cola I'd give him!!. Messi came down, he was even happy. We've been together for an hour and made a great interview which covered everything!. So he said "Now you have to pay the coke". Went to the restaurant. Maracaibo, Venezuela, 3 PM. It was like 40°c, there was nobody, not even a soul in the hotel. The birds were falling down because of the heat. In the restaurant there was nobody. After five minutes they had to call security because they were trying to invade the hotel! That's why I say it's hard to be Messi."

Why the feck would anyone stay in a job for 6 months if they weren't being paid?

I know a lot of people are like that . It happens not because they are stupid but they have lots of financial attachments/benefits with the workplace and will lose them all if they quit. Then of course the manager comes every month and promises you get paid the next and everything will be better very soon. Kind of.

I miss watching the younger Messi. Just fecking untouchable.

An unleashed Doberman, hard to believe we've had the pleasure to watch him for as long as we have already. People just beginning to watch football in the last 5 years or so never got to see this Messi without the benefit of highlights. Every match was a highlight reel of jawdropping moments

Of course, that was more than 11 years ago and he's still amazing us :wenger:

I remember that exactly after this match I went running to my computer to search everything about this kid. Speccialy after the movement at 1:25:drool:

Pfff what a pass against Osasuna today, too bad Suárez couldn't convert it, deserved to be an assist.
