I don't think that stands to reason at all. Just because we have more money doesn't mean we should be throwing it away.

We don't throw it away. We invest it on players the manager wants as part of his long term strategy.

is this a late april fools thread or something?
The club cannot be serious

We pay more than other clubs because we make more money and can. For example, we pay about 50% more than Arsenal, so it stands to reason that our squad players get paid more despite not being perceived to be better than theirs.
That makes no sense. Player value is global, not relative to each club. Why should we pay average players more than other clubs just because we can afford to? Sounds like a stupid way to do business and a good way to continue our trend of spending vast sums of money and having nothing to show for it.

How much would it cost to buy a squad player of similar quality?

I think it would cost us far more to buy a replacement, than the total increase in wages we give him over 4 years.

Like I read somewhere else, an increase of wage of 50k over 4 years amounts to around 10.4m. Could we buy a similar quality replacement for less?

Isn't it no wonder we are making no progress as a club when we are giving Jesse fecking Lingard 100k a week. Should be sold in the summer, don't care about this local lad shit and he tries hard...he's not good enough and never will be for Manchester United

Its not global, its relative to a club's income and how much the club can afford to pay their players in weekly wages. This is why clubs have wage structures.

So Lingard is now going to be on more than Tottenham's highest paid player.

We've gone from being the stingiest club in the world in 2010 to the most profligate in 2017.

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has signed a new contract at Old Trafford that could earn him £100,000 a week.

The 24-year-old England international is now committed to the Premier League club until 2021 and there is the option to extend the deal by a further year.

Lingard has made 70 appearances for United, who he joined as a seven-year-old, and won four caps for his country.

"Manchester United has always been a big part of my life," said Lingard.

"I have been with the club since the age of seven and I feel great pride every time I pull the shirt on."

Lingard holds the rare distinction of scoring in three successive games for his club at Wembley.

After netting the winner in last season's FA Cup final, Lingard also scored against Leicester in the Community Shield and Southampton as United won the EFL Cup in February.

"To have scored in two cup finals for my boyhood club were immensely proud moments for me and my family," he added.

"As a team, we have already won a major trophy this season and I look forward to helping us win many more under this great manager."

United boss Jose Mourinho said: "Jesse is a popular member of the squad and I am delighted he has signed a new contract.

"He has good intelligence which, when combined with his energy and ability, makes for a player with a great future ahead of him."

Lingard had spells on loan at Leicester, Birmingham and Brighton before he was given his first-team debut by Mourinho's predecessor Louis van Gaal against Swansea in the opening game of the 2014-15 season.

This season he has played 29 times, scoring five goals.

Will also make it harder to shift these players in the future when a better alternative comes available. Who else is mad enough to pay £100k for Lingard?

Now we've got that out of the way, you're trying to be pragmatic here so what is going to happen when we are actually after top talent? Basically if we are talking to Griezmann he'd be well within his rights to want 400K a week if we are tossing this kind of money around on medicore squad fillers, it makes a rod for the clubs back when negotiating which is not good business.

Happy for him. A few more rockets at Wembley and it will be worth every penny.

Spurs are horrible on wages. Half their players could easily double their wages by moving elsewhere...and they probably will at some point.

Rival fans will be happier about this news than most United fans, which says it all.

Sounds like you're inventing a straw man of 400k to prove a non-existent point. If we buy Griezmann he would certainly be within his rights to pursue Zlatan/Rooney/Schweinsteiger type numbers.

Fantastic news!
I might be in the minority here but I think he's a fantastic player that will continue to improve as he matures.

Shambolic. Wouldn't get in over half the teams and the league and were trebling his wages. feck off.

It's a gamble. I'm assuming his contract was running out so it was either sell for pennies or keep him for another few years. One of the things I was worried about was Jose gutting the team and replacing with mercenaries. So I'm calm about this news.

Jesse Lingard has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester United worth up to £100,000-a-week.

It's understood that Lingard and his new representatives have already agreed terms with United and the deal will be announced shortly.

The 24-year-old winger will earn a basic £75,000-a-week, rising to £100,000 if United qualify for the Champions League by finishing in the top-four or winning the Europa League.

Lingard had just over a year left on the £30,000-a-week contract he signed in February 2015 before joining Derby County on loan. The 24-year-old had previously had spells at Brighton, Birmingham and Leicester City.

It's a not a straw man argument at all, we have just shown that prices are going up when we offer a player like Lingard that kind of money, we just moved the goalposts for what we pay an average nobody, a world class superstar will then surely expect to be the beneficiary of that knock on effect, it's business 101.

The reaction at the wage  Even squad players will be paid premium at a club like United - just how it is.

I believe most of the wages would be paid off by shirt sales in Manchester; and image rights from twitter.

Will also make it harder to shift these players in the future when a better alternative comes available. Who else is mad enough to pay £100k for Lingard?
No one, just as no one is mad enough to pay Young £120k, or Rooney £250k, or Jones £80k, or Depay £100k, or Schweinsteiger £250k. The list goes on. Our club is so poorly run but what's worse is we're not learning from our mistakes.

He has given us more than Rooney or Schweinsteiger over the last 2 years, now that you mention it.

Why don't you text your mate Gary Neville and ask him to have a word with Jose about this.

Seriously mate, do you think that people like Lingard and an ancient Carrick can make us win the league?

You're just inventing a false construct to support your non-existent point. What we pay Lingard or Darmian or Rojo, have feck all to do with Griezmann. Each player is evaluated individually relative to their football and brand values.

Bloody hell! That's shockingly money for him. The wages in football will ultimately kill the sport IMO it's simply not sustainable long term.

Presumably it is Lingard who has to pay United £100k a week to be able to play in the team, would make more sense.

Apparently we have a choice between a player of Messi's standard or we have to have Lingard - according to Lingard's fans/apologists there is nothing in between.

They say things come in threes , first Brexit, then Trump, now Lingard, the lunatics really have taken over the asylum.

Just when I thought we may have a chance of winning the league soon, looks like at least another 4 year wait
