Ligue 1 | French Football 2017/18

The problem for Ligue 1 is that they don't have some teams who are like the likes of WBA, or Crystal Palace. The problem is most of them are like that. No real core of top teams. A big team, PSG, a good team, Monaco, some medium teams like Lyon and Nice, and a lot of mediocre to poor sides.

It is like that in basically any league. There is no league where it is titan vs titan every week.

Well, first of all in France it's never titan vs titan. Monaco just lost to Nice 4-0 some weeks ago. That's not a titan. In EPL there are many top games, in Spain there aren't as many, but still a lot of big games at the top. In Italy there are quite a few top games as well, and also in Germany.

The best 4 leagues, Spain, EPL, Italy and Germany are far ahead of the rest. France is closer to Portugal or Russian league, with the exception of PSG, in terms of overall quality. Hell, the matches between Porto, Benfica and Sporting are bigger derbies than what you get in Ligue 1 these days.

PSG can never win the perception battle now

If they beat teams 5-1 then its dismissed because its a "shite league"
If they don't beat teams 5-1 then its "why aren't they beating shite league teams 5-1?"

Yeah, PSG will be hated forever: the price to pay for success/ransom for glory.

I follow PSG since the mid 90s: the club has always been hated/mocked in France because it's the club of the Capital of France

PSG generates business for the media and generates jealousy. The most glamorous players in the French league played for PSG!

La Liga and EPL are by far the best. But the problem for Ligue 1 is that both Serie A and Bundesliga are far ahead of Ligue 1 as well.
Crystal Palace, the team that has zero goals, zero points , -17 in goal difference  ??? Are you fecking kidding me ? Did you not watch PSG struggle against Montpellier ? Play badly against Lyon (won only thanks to 2 own goals). PSG will win the league there is no doubt and yes the PL is stronger in general, you won't have much of a debate about it.
PSG would destroy English teams in general just easily as in the french league, look at how they took care of Bayern. The PL has tons of mediocre to shit teams too.

But the solution is to have new investors from exotic countries to foster competition

Will see how it goes this season but, last season teams outside of the top 7 in the PL were just awful.

And it is the case for every league. I just laugh at the notion that a lower league team in England is tougher to play than against one from France. I personally have no idea about it but it's just some are so sure of it that is a mystery. Plenty of crap washed up players from the Ligue 1 are playing the PL for the same poor teams anyway.

Can debate it until the cows come home, but at the end of the day, who really gives a feck what happens in the French league. My interest in it went from about a 3 to a 5, on a scale of 0-100, with the dawn of the Petro-dollar fueled rise of PSG. I'm sure this is the same for most football fans outside of France.

Neymar is one of the best players in the world, going to play in a second tier league just seems like a crying shame. He just became a whole lot less relevant, outside of a handful of CL games.

Crystal Palace was just a name. PSG wouldn't destroy anything in England and Spain, what a laughable claim. They'll probably be knocked out by a team from these leagues from CL like they were in the previous years.

Ligue 1 is a medium level league. More similar to the league in Portugal than to the big 4.

Yeah, we can't know because there isn't a tournament where Strasbourg could play against West Bromwich.

That said, I think French teams are better defensively than offensively. Spanish sides have player with better technical skills. German sides are more risk-taker.

I'm talking about the lower league teams, that was the topic. The tough Crystal Palace and WBA equivalent teams

You're in the Ligue 1 thread man, of course people care.

Like Madrid destroyed Betis and Levante? The overall quality of the teams in Spain and England is higher. Better teams than PSG lose more points in Spain than PSG lose in France because the league is tougher.

Don't think there is a major difference between Ligue 1 teams and Bundesliga teams. PSG is the Bayern of Ligue 1 and the rest is irrelevant.

A 66% increase in one year  In the long run, you might become a fan of F.C. Lorient: who knows?

Bundesliga is on the decline. Serie A is on the rise. The order now imo is Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France.

It doesn't look like France will move from no5 too soon.

I agree, last week AS Monaco - Porto 0-3 in the UCL and Sporting CP/Benfica/Braga (who defeated a very decent team like Hoffenheim in UEL) aren't much different than Nice/Lyon/OM in terms of quality

Or we could talk about how the weakest Barca in years is leading La Liga by beating those teams too.. You see, we can always turn facts to suit our agendas.

The French posters don't oversell the league: we know our performances at the European stage.

2 trophies only: 1993 Marseille + 1996 PSG

It says all.

Not to mention that historically, France doesn't have a single team as big as Benfica and Porto.

Good.

Historically, Nottingham Forest won 2 European Cups: so Nottingham has a better team than City or Chelsea?

No. That was not a main argument. Just goes to show why I'd rather watch a Benfica - Porto than any match in Ligue 1.

Basel just mashed Benfica 5-0... I guess selling many of their best players has cost them.

As far as I'm concerned, I watch a football game if I have the feeling I would see a great game: attractive style of play, favourite players, teams under pressure, decisive match...

I won't watch Benfica against Setubal because Eusebio was a Ballon d'or in the 60s or because Benfica won 36 times the Portuguese league.

No, but does France have a match as intense, and heated as Benfica - Porto, or Sporting - Benfica? Imo, no. I'd rather watch a derby like that, than watch PSG beat a bunch of Europa League teams at best.

Do you really think the worst team in Ligue 1 has players the quality of Benteke, Sakho & Cabaye? St Etiene we played in the Euro Cup last year were worse than any PL side and they were quite good in Ligue Un.

When you want, you can post something that makes sense :D

PSG-Marseille, Lyon-Saint-Etienne.

We don't have real derbies because there aren't 2 good teams per city.

Paris has only one top club, the same applies for any city

Big accident in Amiens-Lille game, barrier fell and there's 18 injured fans, 3 in critical conditions

Saint-Etienne that we struggled a little to beat ? Benteke is a donkey, Cabaye is washed up. Only Sakho would play for a decentish team (he wouldn't play for the top 2 teams). So I think there are many players of the same level of Cabaye and Benteke in the ligue 1.

At the bottom of Ligue 1? Beneteke is an international for a good nation BTW.

Gignac played at the Euros too. Eder scored the winning goal for Portugal :D, being an international means nothing just like their pedigree means nothing if their team has 0 points, 0 goals (?), -17 in GD. For me that's even worse than Metz tbh. It's proof that they're just names and not players anymore.

The thingn with Ligue 1 teams is that they are a good league for young players with potential. They may not look like proper strong (financial, ambitious) teams, but here and there some players just break through. There would be those who are better than Benteke, Cabayes potential wise. You never know.

For some reason I always thought Marseilles was the most hated? But I think you are okay with jealousy if you can start winning Champions Leagues !

Eder! Fair enough though. If you see it like that then we will have to agree to disagree. PSG will be a force in the CL at least.
