Let's talk 'keepers: who do we buy and why?

Kovar gets plenty of mentions on here but there were more reports yesterday that Leverkusen are looking to move him on because he hasn't performed well enough in the opportunities that he's had. If that's the case then clearly he's not good enough to return here.
Reports that indicate Leverkusen are looking at Freiburg's Noah Atubolu to replace Kovar. Maybe he could also be a better option for United than Kovar.

From what I've seen he had a good run as their EL 'keeper last year as they got to the final (and I don't think was at fault for any of the goals against Atalanta) but doesn't seem to be playing at the same level in his opportunities this season, most of which have been in Europe again in the CL this time. Think he might have had the odd howler or two...

I'm not really sure what the urge seems to be to get him back other than the fact he's perceived as affordable (although there's no concrete reports on what the buyback amount is) and that not he's not Andre Onana.

Kelleher would be a solid option, but not sure Liverpool would sell to us, even with just a year left on his deal.

Carnesecchi (Atalanta) is also coming into the final year of his deal and is a good sweeper-style keeper.

Joan García looks good (Arsenal, City, Barca all apparently interested) but would probably be expensive.

Difficult to look past Alex Meret in the bargain stakes as he's going for free this summer.
Came here to say Joan Garcia, big guy, very commanding.

Most sources say that Joan Garcia has a 25-30 million euros release clause.

So Kovar is now even benched in the cup... looks a bit like the end of the road in Leverkusen for him, full trust in Hradecky now and in the summer Leverkusen will look for a new successor to him.

Going by the eye test, I still maintain that Kepa is one to keep in mind as a Onana replacement.

No one, we already have 2 decent keepers and there are other areas of the team we need to prioritise
It’s by no means no.1 priority but if a decent enough bid comes in for Onana then we should snap them up. He’s proven he isn’t reliable enough for a team aspiring to challenge for top honours which is the standards we need to get back to over the next 2 years.

I, maybe optimistically, believe Onana could be sold for around £20m. And Marco Carnesecchi's contract is expiring in 2026 so I can see Atalanta selling him for a similar fee. If Burnely don't get promoted, then James Trafford will be going for not too much more than that either. Carnesecchi would seem like an immediate upgrade but Trafford maybe has the highest ceiling.

He is a decent keeper, we dont need to be spending on another keeper at this point.
I think Striker, keeper and wingback are the main areas to strengthen.

A striker and goalkeeper are essential parts of a top team

I would swap him for most keepers in the PL (bar anyone from Chelsea) and we would see an improvement.

He’s terrible. He can’t even get the basics right. I don’t need to go into more detail, as it’s been done to death.

It should also be possible to get an upgrade for a relatively good price given keepers are still (generally) far cheaper than outfield players.

Keep an eye on Kaua Santos (Frankfurt) tonight. Watching him against Spurs should give a pretty good idea if he would be ready for the PL.

Im not sold on Onana but since we will also need to replace Heaton this summer I’m sure we will be looking for a keeper of some sort

I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t replace Heaton. Obviously there is value in an experienced 3rd choice keeper - who is happy not to play. But, these keepers are on a relatively big wage (considering they are unlikely to ever play) - so can see this as a way for the club to cut costs, and just have academy keepers as the back up.

However we should be looking for a replacement for Onana, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Bayindir asks to leave - especially if there is no Europe next season.

We must be looking at keepers - for a no. of scenarios.

Mile Svilar from Roma would be an excellent choice, young and improving but experienced enough and probably wouldn't cost more than 20/25M Euro at this point.

It would be nice to have a keeper who is commanding in the air and comes out to claim crosses.

Me too. It’d be more effective as an attacking trigger, than whatever we’re trying to achieve with Onana’s playing out short from the back.

Having a keeper who can come out and claim it, then spring a quick counter would push teams further back imo, and create more chances. We’ve not been able to do this since De Gea became no.1.

Anyone but fecking Onana, how many times does he fecking cost us ? I’d honestly rather Heaton play until the end of the season, ETH should be arrested for the crimes he committed against us transfer wise

Anybody, I think anyone is an upgrade. We might leave the goal empty and still less embarrassing

Shouldn’t play again really. It’s not like we were under the cosh and he’s finally made a mistake after making save after save. We were in complete control, looking confident and now we look the complete opposite.

A traffic cone would be less embarrassing that this fecking clown.

I remember growing up whinging about the likes of Roy Carroll in net. Jesus christ, I'd take half a Carroll at this point.

I don't care how little money we have in the summer, but the first thing I would do is shift Onana. Absolute travesty of a footballer, and is a huge net negative to us every single game.

Some nice saves. However, you can’t judge a keeper on their highlights. I reckon we could even put together a highlight reel for Calamity Onana.

He looks athletic and commanding, which is what we should have in a keeper.
