Let's all laugh at England

This thread has not dissapointed thus far. I thought England were the better team yesterday and with the teams that are left this would have been a glorious chance to win it. So I see where the extra salt is coming from.

Do you realise they are a English club?

Owned by Americans. This is exactly why a lot of non English fans love it when England loses. Just because Old Trafford is located in England and they play in the English league has got nothing to do with supporting the English national football team.
To all English fans who understand this I hope you know why this happens. There are lots who understand it I accept.

Sucks being a United England fan these days. At least in the golden generation era we had the consolation of having a title chasing United side to fall back on.

Now we have the usual England disappointment but with the prospect of battling for fourth to fall back on.

Still an English club though. It’s weird that someone who hates England so much supports an English club. Maybe support a club from your home country. It’s the same as supporting a club in England from miles away on a smaller scale. I support Bristol City which is never easy but I’m from Bristol so put up with it.

You'd think England fans would relish the "no one likes us, we don't care" status. I suppose it's hard to adopt a siege mentality when you're more used to doing the invading.
That kind of status only works for winners though. When every two years everybody gets to point at you and laugh, after a while you can see how that might start to grind....

It always makes me laugh when I see how much hatred there is on here towards the English national mens football team. We are talking about a group of 20 odd lads who are just playing football. If you've got a problem with England as an actual country consisting of 60 plus million people then I have no words. If you've got a problem with the history of England or the UK then join the club because you aren't alone. But to be a massive fan of a club that is based in a country you despise is fascinating.

I've had this out before on here after Italy won the euros. Irish posters were in hysterics after England lost. When I reminded them that they support an English football club they lost their shit.

Schalke's fan culture would beg to differ. You just have to keep digging deeper and deeper into the "everyone hates us, referees are always against us" well. With enough dedication it can actually work.

English patriots being so precious that they call every bit of banter straight up hate is part of why these threads are such a success. xoxo

The fact that some people are constantly baffled by the idea of someone supporting a club within a country while also rooting against the national team of that country highlights the remarkably narrow understanding some fans have of how being a football supporter works.

We lost because Harry missed a penalty, that can happen to anyone. Think there has been real progress with this side, he has brought in a lot of young players that will be the basis of England's side for years. There is no disgrace losing to the World Champions. Also we behaved we some dignity not like foul mouthed idiots moaning about referees when we would have been justified.

The first world cup I remember was usa 94. I was rooting for the Irish I was only 10 years old at the time. I never realised everyone hated us English so much. It's okay though that's football, I'll still root for the Irish in world cup's and the euros, even though they have some hatred towards us.

I totally get that and can absolutely understand the enjoyment in seeing us fail (yet again!) from an outsider perspective. Hell, at this point its a joke to many of us as well. My point is more that when that spills over into generalizing national characteristics in a manner intended to offend, or banging on about imperialism, it drains the fun rather and becomes a bit nasty.

Both good posts that won’t really get an answer.

That said you don’t have to support England if you support an English club. It is weird to overtly hate the English people and do so though. Especially when the club has a rich history of producing home grown talent.

The forum is a strange place though. We have a German Dortmund fan logging on to a United forum for the first time in weeks to revive their trolling on the final whistle then trying to justify it because of WW2, Brexit and English football hooliganism.

I suspect many don’t have much of a life.

Imagine feeling a strong connection to a club based in a particular geographical territory and still finding your first cognitive reaction to the loss of the state where it bears its name one of merriment and gaiety.

Some of you ought to be sent packing to the furthest reaches of Cydonia without a coat :wenger:

Do you think that only English players should play for English club teams?

Nah we support United and dislike the English national team and it’s fairly easy for most to accept.

Why on gods green earth would I want to see the likes of Henderson, Kane and Foden do well. The silver lining when England do well is always that at least some United players are there but that’s the case with most international teams.

I appreciate that you are in a fragile place right now and have to lash out at someone to cope, but please stick to the facts:

Glad you're still not wound up:lol:

Why not any more?

1998 was the turning point. The vitriol Beckham received, he was booed at every away game and it felt like a siege mentality as his only support came from us United fans, they had burning fecking effigies of the bloke. I still couldn't totally shake off my support but then with the shite United players received, I went to an England game at the old Wembley and all that seemed to be sung around me was "Stand up if you hate United". I received racial abuse from my 'fellow' fans that day too as I sat there in my England shirt. I was about 14 years old.

Then into the mid 00's came this media and player arrogance, Owen stating "I don't think any of the Croatian team would get into our team" after England went out in qualifying. The John Terry racism incident meant feck all as he was still picked for England as Rio stayed home, not sure if he was still captain but that was a disgrace. Then the racial abuse the likes of Rashford, Sancho and Saka received. I forgot the abuse Hargreaves received just because he didn't play for an English club at the time, I mean he was only playing for UCL winners Bayern Munich

I've probably missed other reasons too like how unlikable Gerrard, Terry, Ashley Cole, Owen were,

I could go on with how the press and Hoddle treated Andy Cole or how the media hounded Cristiano Ronaldo after 2006 and went on about how he should be 'battered' when he comes back to England.

Due to all of this, its United > England

You wish I was in a fragile place but sadly not.

Just because me, and others actually, are calling you out for being a little troll, doesn’t mean we are fragile. Just fed up of your tedious and idiotic posting that goes well beyond last night.

Hope that clears it up!

Last night was tough because I felt we had France for the taking. They didn't have to do that much to win which was also frustrating.
What I would say is that this is an England side I genuinely like both as individuals and as a team. They play some good football and actually look like a club side.
Whilst I don't necessarily think Southgate is the coach to take us forward, I think what he has done in building a team not just on the pitch but off it has been brilliant.

Are you from Manchester? Because I’ve news for you. There are a lot of local Manchester United fans who have no time for the English national team at all. They support an English football team and live in England but still enjoy the English team losing. I don’t think they would lose their shit at all if you reminded them of these facts. Probably just laugh at you (in the same way I assume Irish fans did when you tried the same tactic with them)

Yep, I've never really understood the mentality behind trolling. All I can think is that it's an attention thing. Would be so interested to meet some of these folks in real life (in an anthropological study kind of way, not a fight me in a Hull car park kind of way!)

Why do these threads always turn out as a mix of Oprah/Freud/Nietzsche discourse about why who feels like what.

People like Schadenfreude. Either deal with it and take the banter or don’t go into these threads. No point in trying to explain to people what their appropriate way to feel about England losing is. Certainly won’t make the loss more bearable.

Because it's always the same (type of) triggered nationalists, that can't take a joke at their country's expense. It's like following some "five stages of grief" pattern, but for football fans.

Merriment and Gaiety indeed

We laugh our nuts off every 2 years, we love it.

Those are few posters, name and shame them if you must, but don't put everyone in the same bracket.

Can't speak for others but from my point of view I would be happiest if England comes home early from any tournament mainly because there's always several United players in the NT. It gives those players chance to come home early, relax, recover and be ready for whatever challenge lays infront of them with United. I don't support England NT but Manchester United, and if Manchester United well being depends on NT success than I'll cheer against your NT every given chance.

That doesn't mean I hate whole of England, your people or what not, just don't want United players tiring in NT when you know no matter how far they go in competiton there won't be name on the trophy.

Just seems a bit of light banter really.

Why people get upset about people supporting United and not England is bizarre.

As I said before you don’t have to ‘support’ both but it is weird to have a deep rooted hatred of the English yet support an English club.

I was born in Withington but now live in chorlton. Takes me about 15 minutes to walk to OT. My family are irish. I lived in Manchester all my life. All but one of my grandparents were born in Ireland. Just remember that you support an English football club no matter how you spin it.

I’m not going to name and shame but as with all these threads we’ve had the Empire mentioned, Brexit, WW2, xenophobia and football hooliganism all mentioned as justification.

That’s when the light hearted banter takes another slant. One that wouldn’t be tolerated elsewhere.

I thought I’d be more gutted but I’m pretty much indifferent. Was expecting it to an extent. Southgate did well with the line up but felt he balls up the subs. We’ve done well with him but I don’t think he’ll ever take us all the way.

From an outside, I think one of the reasons why a lot of English people enjoy England losing is that for generations it was a treated effectively as another London team, with guys from West Ham, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal getting a much easier press than players from the north.

England should always have been playing around the country instead of in one location.
