Leighton Baines

Haha, I absolutely hate this argument about how Fabio was allegedly better than Rafael, when they were about 14. The fact is, Rafael has now far exceeded Fabio.

Yes, but somebody made a daft claim about how Fabio was made to play on the left from a young age because he wasn't as good as Rafael. Which doesn't add up at all.

Baines all day over Contraeo (Not that we'd ever actually be in for Contraeo anyway).

I'd be over the moon if we signed Baines, though I'd expect it'd be a bit more pricey than that, probably the 15 million region. It'd also mean Evra leaving and in all honesty, that'd be a ballsy move by Moyes as somebody already mentioned.

For me Baines is up there with the best LB's in the world and barring Lahm who now plays at RB, I'd probably take him over almost any of them. Reckon he'd suit us down to a tea too.

Well I guess none of us really know the truth unless someone on here has been following their careers since junior level.

Erm, where did I say that anyone said anything to the contrary? I simply stayed that I hate this ridiculous 'fact' that Fabio was better than Rafael about 6 years ago. It gets brought up on here way too often and people almost spout it as it they are ITK, and have been watching them since they were 12. Fact is, I just have to believe that Fabio was better because people on the Caf said so.

No, you dont have to believe it.

If evra did leave than for 10-12 mil baines would be a excellent replacement imo. Good defensively and very good going forward. If we did try and alter our system to allow kagawa to drift from the left then baines is perfect for that role. Having said that I'd think spending much more than about 12 mil would be excessive and we could may find someone else for cheaper. The earlier figures of 20+ mil were ott for me.

If both stayed, could anyone see either of them being pushed forward to the LM spot? Would be great playing both in big games as that left side would be solid defensively and a threat going forward.

Evra to play in central midfield? With Baines?

Isn't Baines 28? Means we'd need another long term replacement within a few seasons unless Fabio comes on leaps and bounds.

No. The left winger spot should be a winger, not a full back. Kagawa.

Why not? Not saying you're wrong, just that if we aren't, we should be.

Very rare to consider a player the best in his position in the world for standing out in a midtable team, and having not been tested in the Champions League or a major international tournament.

I don't think £12 million is enough to make us accept. £15-20 would probably be our valuation which is fair for his quality and value to our team.

Come on. A 28 year old full back for 20 Million? Fair enough re. the value he brings to your team but in terms of a footballer on the market that is too steep, easily.

Baines is good going forward and with set pieces (not that he'd get any with RVP around) but is he that good a defender? Fergie left him alone for a reason.

Tbh Baines is probably more of a winger than Kagawa.
Kagawa is more suited through the middle.

where we have Rooney. Doesnt leave us with much choice.

Also, not all good attacking LBs can automatically become good wingers. entirely different game.

That's definitely the key point as far as Everton are concerned. He's effectively irreplaceable for them in terms of his contribution.

From the other side though, his value is never going to increase from this point in his career. There would be no re-sell value and regardless of how well he performs, his valuation will only decline from here.

I wasn't talking in terms of peoples general valuation. I was talking in terms of what Everton as a club would feel he was worth if they were forced to sell.

This escalated quickly. The Times with a story and Everton already with a response. I can definitely see this happening.

But in terms of being realistic, if you guys get an offer of 12-15m for a 28 year old with 2 years left on his deal, I just don't see you lot holding out for 20m. He's not worth 20m but you'd rather invest what you can get in a new player(s).

We would hold out for more than £15 million in my opinion. He's worth that to us and it's our valuation that matters at the end of the day.

I think people are not realizing a very important reason. Evra has played every single match for us apart from dead rubber matches. Champions league,COC,FA cup and the league. Even if we buy baines, I think we can use them both appropriately. Evra is getting old and he's not at his peak. He'll get a decent amount with Baines getting the major share of games at LB. It's only fair that he be satisfied with that. Fabio is not ready to step up right now, Buttner is not good enough. We don't have to sell Evra unless he really wants to leave. He's a true red. Loves the club and was a great servant. I don't want him sold :(
