Leighton Baines

Um, no he's not a no nonsense defender. He's a very average defender, the only thing that stands out about him is having a great long ranged shot.

Similar level to Cole imo, different sort of player though. His delivery from the left outclasses almost all the left wingers in the league.

You were right the first time.

I don't see how he'd ever oust Evra though and he won't be prepared to sit on the bench forever without getting a look in.

He has progressed then yeah?

The problem with Baines is his lack of pace and considering that due to our style of play we are more exposed to counter attacks than Everton, I dont think this could be a very good idea.

Anyone who saw him make Downing look like Messi in the FA cup semi-final would be less than keen.

Replacing Evra with Baines can not be considered as anything other than a move backwards.

People keep saying that we will sell him for as little as £6 million because of our finances. But we managed to get £10 million for Arteta and Baines is much more valuable to us than he was imo. I think we would hold out for £15 million +.

Plus regarding to Baines being worse than Evra. When Evra was at his prime? Yes. Right now? No.

Unless he gets injured he'll be in. Although didn't he miss the world cup because he gets homesick?

I do like Baines and he's improved a lot as a defender. He's certainly more dogged than Evra has been recently, but it would cost upwards of £10m. It would be a little odd to have 2 good and experienced left backs, so unless Evra is leaving for one of the oil clubs, I can't see it happening.

Wouldn't mind Baines, think he's been better than Evra over the last season and a half. Great crosser of the ball, which Evra lacks.

In an ideal world I'd rather us not sign anyone in that position apart from perhaps Clyne who can play at fullback on either side, and give Fabio more game time in our side rather than loaning him out. As that isn't going to happen, Baines would be a decent signing, however like Seagull I don't think it would make too much sense unless Evra was leaving in the near future.

If this transfer does happen, then ideally I'd want Fabio to go to Everton on loan as part of the deal. He would get Premier League experience there and would play in quite a lot of games. Only thing missing is the European football but the chances are whichever club he is loaned to (most likely in Portugal) if they are in the Champions League they've probably got a regular left back of their own and won't be able to give him that much game time.

I can't believe these rumours. There must be other, better prospects out there we would be better off looking at if we're looking for another left-back. He's an obvious stop-gap option however, considering he'll be turning 28 in a few months.

Still... I don't want to believe the rumours.

I see some are complaining about his lack of pace.

I've never thought of him as a particularly slow player.

Like Gary Neville in his prime, no? Pace wise that is.

He's been consistently one of the best left backs in the Premier League, he's English, he's at his peak, he's proven in the Premier League - what's not to like?

Bains slow? :lol::lol::lol:

this guys runs up and down the pitch like Cafu at his prime.

Really? Comparing Cafu with Baines? Isn't that like comparing Henry with Berbatov?

Baines is quite slow for a fullback and struggles against fast, and strong, opponents. He isn't what we need! Good player though.

well ok, we all know he is not Cafu but i have no questions marks over his pace or stamina. I've seen him 5-6 this season was i was nothing but impressed.

His stamina is terrific, but Everton should praise themselves lucky that he was out against us in the 4-4 draw as he has proven before he is no match for Valencia whose speed and strength is too much for him to handle. Evra may have lost pace, but he is still a fair bit faster than Baines, and now that Rio has lost some pace I don't think we should buy fullbacks who are slower than the ones we have - Vidic isn't exactly Usain Bolt either, so we need fast fullbacks to protect against the counter attacks.

No doubt he is a good player, but imo not the type we need.

Is SAF on a mission to buy as many english players as possible?

Over the last year or so we've bought jones, smalling, young and introduced cleverley into the squad...a coincidence?

Probably £20m+ for a player a few months off being 28 to replace a player only a few years older. I don't see it.

Nope. I think he's trying to put a core of English players in place who will be loyal and take the club forward after he retires. On baines, evra's been shit for 18 months. He needs a kick up the arse.

Gary Neville had him in his team of the year, I'd say he's pretty well qualified to judge a full back.

He readily admitted that he picked Coloccini based on the general public opinion, I don't think it's too much of a leap to say he did the same for Baines. And being the best fullback in a league with no great fullbacks doesn't mean a lot regardless.

Probably in anticipation for the 6+5 rule that Fifa tries to push through every year.
