Leighton Baines

At the moment we have two vary different LFB's

Evra = Offensive player who loves to bomb down the left flank

Gabby = No nonsense defensive player

Have such players allows SAF to organise his team in accordance with oppositions, so would we be looking for Baines to fill the Gabby role as he doesn't look to be that threatening going forwards when i've watched him.

Plus has anybody heard of any potential RB's joining the club or are we waiting on those brazilian lads?

That assumes that Fergie wants a no nonsense type, I'm not sure he does

I dont think we really need him, even if Gabby leaves. It would be nice to have cover and he is a decent player, who could properly make the step up. Sending 6 million on him this summer should be money sent on a forward, which departments needs more strenghing at the moment.

reminds me of irwin, and thats the highest praise I can give, think he's a liverfool fan though

After watching the matches against Wigan yesterdat, I wouldn't mind SAF making a cheeky bid for Baines. The kid has a heck of a left foot. He'd only improve at Old Trafford. Very well could be "the new Irwin."

Several Sunday papers believe Wigan's Leighton Baines could be the unlikely beneficiary of the row between United and Liverpool, no matter where Heinze's future lies.

Baines snubbed Keano recently and his camp believe he can shine at a higher level. Liverpool and United are reportedly interested once Heinze's situation is clarified.

PS: Baines is a Toffee fan.

What do you think of Baines, wise man?

I reckon he would be a good signing for us, but it will not be a good signing for him in terms of his career progression. If he signs for us, it would be kind of like what Wayne Bridge is suffering right now, perennial second choice behind a more attacking minded left back.

Steady and consistent, nothing special. Could be reliably trusted to do a job.

Mediocre players seem special in an average team. Watch Richardson look good at Sunderland, Phil Neville looks a world beater in an Everton team.

When I heard he was going to sign for Sunderland I just didn't get it. What's the point of moving from one club to another if it means absolutely nothing in terms of climbing the league system, unless you're having personal problems in your current club. I mean, the guy is an english U-21 player and should be able to attract clubs like Newcastle for example. I think he should remain in Wigan for another season, or at least until january, and then move on depending on how his team is doing.

I don't really rate Baines that highly; he seems rather mediocre for a club like United.

Of course he's mediocre. He's not exactly Patrice Evra. We're looking for speed in our game, and we can't have the likes of Baines running around looking like a clown. Even Heinze is a tough call.

How many years has Baines left on his contract?

PS: Baines is a Toffee fan.
He's a Liverpool fan apparently. http://www.fourfourtwo.premiumtv.co.uk/page/TheBoys/0,,11442~587312,00.html

"As a boy I supported... Liverpool. As a local lad I used to watch from The Kop when Robbie Fowler was making his name. I started out at Liverpool's Centre of Excellence and although it was disappointing when nothing came of it, I was lucky that both Wigan and Wolves wanted to sign me"

Stand corrected - cheers.

Even if we let Heinze leave(and we should let him feck off to liverpool) we don't really need to sign a left back in my opinion.

It's about time John o'shea stepped up to the plate and presented himself as a good alternative to Evra you also have Johnny evans who could make this he's natural position and a few of the youth cup finalist(cathcart springs to mind) who could be promoted.

We could also look at pique in this position as he's still young and very technically gifted for a centre back, I didn't expect him to be able to play DM but he did that convicingly at Zaragoza so converting him to LB could be a really promising option.

Basically I want to see one of our youth team players/products given a chance in the absense of both heinze and silvestre. No need to spend any cash in this area when you have so many other options already at the club.

Denis Irwin was no world beater but he was consistently good for over 10 years with us. I wouldn't mind him as our 2nd choice left back.

O'Shea is rubbish going forward, as is Wes and Heinze, at the end of the season we were playing 5 in midfield which lets the fullbacks attack but they provided nothing.

Baines is a fine left back, defends well, attacks well and occasionally will thump one in from 30 yards, thats better then most.

Good read...

When Alex Ferguson payed Oldham Athletic £650,000 for Denis Irwin he surely completed one of the greatest transfer coups in football history.
Denis is arguably the most complete full-back in the English game and has been among the most important members of the United team during their 90's dynasty.

Reliable and versatile he has been a regular at club and international level for nearly a decade. Irwin is the epitomy of consistancy turning in superb performance after superb performance. So much so that he is only ever really noticed when he has a rare off day. An Irwin mistake is to this day a collector's item!

Upon his arrival at Old Trafford for the 1990/91 season he was deployed at right back but was moved to left back the following season with the purchase great an adjustment to their game, but equally confident with both feet Irwin slotted into the position without a complaint and until the recent emergance of Phil Neville was one of the first names down in every United line-up.

Apart from being a textbook defender he is also a highly accomplished attacking full-back with his swerving crosses a nightmare to deal with for goalkeepers and defenders alike. Both feet are also loaded with one of the most powerful shots in the game which has taken him well into double figures goalscoring wise.

Some of his goals to remember include his crucial 25 yard strike in the 1:0 win at Coventry in 1993; his Giggs-like dribble and finish against Wimbledon in an FA Cup 5th round tie in 1994; and in early 1995 his impeccably struck free-kick against Liverpool which Bruce Grobelaar could only gape at and admire as it found the top corner.

Even with growing competition from Phil Neville and Mikael Silvestre, Irwin has still managed to remain first choice full-back, a testament to his consistently high performances. His ability from the left back position in roaming forward in support of Ryan Giggs is a huge benefit to the United attack, and his consistency from the penalty spot makes him first choice penalty taker.

Sadly Irwin's time at the club has drawn to an end. Irwin left the club in the Summer of 2002 looking for a new challenge. He will be sorely missed by all reds, but we are all greatful for his contributions down the years.

I wouldn't mind Baines as a 2nd choice left back. Would be great cover for Evra and would in my opinion provide good competition.

Is he any better than our own youngster? We have quite a few of decent young defenders I am sure.

We dont need anymore defenders. We have them in abundance at the moment. In addition to the already established ones, our academy only seems to be churning out defenders nowadays. On top of we still have the Brazilian wing backs to arrive next summer.

if only baines was right footed :( i dont mind brown or o'shea at right back to fill in for neville when he's injured, but i'd like somebody who is more attack minded, like evra

Well, if we sell Heinze and Silvestre it might not be a bad idea to have Baines around a few seasons until Rafael breaks into the first team picture and competes with Evra.

Baines is decent, one of the better left backs in the premiership but never likely to push Evra.

O'shea is by most accounts quite technically gifted for a guy of he's size so the only problem with he's forward play as I see it is down to he's rustiness in the position. He's not the utility man that everyone seems to make him out to be as he's a useless DM and should only be used there in emegencies.

SAF should be saying to him now that we have cover in DM that LB/CB is he's natural position and there is an opening at LB so he needs to focus solely in training at playing LB.

There is nothing wrong with he's foward play that couldn't be ironed out in training he has decent pace and a good first touch he only requires knowledge of when to hold position and when to go forward.

We also don't require the most forward thinking LB as we seem to be playing 4-4-2 which switches to 4-3-3 when we have the ball so the three forwards are always the most advanced attackers. He should focus more on becoming a solid LB and the attacking side will sort itself out.

to be honest not many players turn down clubs as big as United. With the fixture liet we have he would be sure of plenty of games and he may fancy himself to eventually take Evra's place.

He's actually a very attcking full back anyway and has scored some great goals over the last couple of seasons.

Baines shouldn't move here to be fair, he's young and needs to play to fully develop and he won't get to at Old Trafford with Evra around. I'd rather we bought some older defender who would settle for a back-up role, but I guess we already have one in Silvestre who is good enough to cover for Evra.

I disagree with that. The reason Evra has took Gaby's place is because of his ability to get forward. Fergie in my opinion seems to like his full back to get forward. O'shea for me (while being a very capable squad player) isn't good enough to regularly play left back should Evra get injured.
