Leighton Baines

I seemed convinced at one point we were signing him, but it's been very quiet on this front for a while. This is either some shrewd business by Fergie, or the more probable option that the deal's off.
I know a lot of you wouldn't be excited about this signing, but I think he'd basicaly be 1 of the 2 missing pieces in our squad and we'd definetely be strong enough to take on any team, he'd provide excellent cover at first, and subsequently make Evra try harder unless he wants to lose his spot. In the meanwhile Fabio's someplace else getting the minutes he needs in order to mature and iron out his mistakes to a point where he's ready to come in and be handed the reigns on the LB position. All the while we got 2 excellent LBs, and I dare say a CM signing (both definetely won't be happening this year, and I'm leaning towards the LB as to the more probable one) away from having next to no "weaknesses".
Whatever happens on the pitch happens, nobody wins every game, but I'm very optimistic about us challenging on all fronts and winning some silverware 2 if/when Fergie gets this sorted out, because let's face it we pretty much got the GK, CB, RB, LW, RW and ST/CF positions covered in quantity and most importantly quality now more than ever (maybe besides the 07/08 season)

I honestly can't remember, but did we have 2 left-backs in 07-08? I remember Heinze left at the start of that season, but was that when Evra started playing every single game?

In any case it was a younger and fitter Evra.

You lot should be ashamed of yourselves...;)

How much do we fecking need this guy right now? Talk about not appreciating something properly until it's missing. I always thought I properly grasped his importance, but it's only now at a point like this whereby we've got issues all across the back four that it's become clear how vital he was for us.

Pisstaking aside, O'Shea would've helped us last year, but fergie seems to know when to move on players.

I often think how helpful he would have been last year and now.

Really think this was one a the few mistakes SAF has made... :(.

Seeing as he was generally terrible for Sunderland last year, it was probably a good decision to let him go. Jones is his replacement and could possibly play on the left if needed but he's obviously injured.

I expect he will be sold for £12m plus add ons.....can he play at CB?

just seen this posted on Sky.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that he could make one more signing before the transfer window closes. Everton's Leighton Baines has been linked with United as Ferguson looks to bring in a new left-back

But that move was John's idea if i'm not mistaken.
He wanted to play a bigger role, and he became the captain for Sunderland on arrival. Not that bad. You tend to get quite blind when you constantly watch a team like United. The talent needed just to reach the reserves in a premier league club is ridiculous.

For all the people in this thread and especially an Arsenal wum saying he cant actually defend, he sure put in a good defensive performance tonight. About the sum total of all our players was Nani beating him for pace once and then Baines catching up and stopping his cross.

We had Nani who found it tough to get any change from him and Valencia supporting from right back. Then Nani went left leaving Valencia on the right wing and he got no change either.

Pienar was obviously helping him out doing his job for the team but it was Baines making the blocks to crosses and taking the ball clean off our wingers a few times. Took it off Rooney in the 85th minute as well.

Perhaps tonight showed us why he was actually part of the 3rd best defence in the league last season and isnt a defensive liability like some have suggested.

I think he is fine in a defensive team, not sure how he could handle pacy wingers on the counter attack when the game is stretched

He cant be worse than evra for sure. just hope that buttner settles quickly

We tried to break a few times but got little joy out of it whether on his wing or on the other side.

Is it the haircut people?

Yeah, I think that's true. Just saying we really miss him.

Baines isn't great defensively but pretty much anyone would be an improvement on Evra.

No Thanks.. Don't back him to win a battle against a top winger abit like Evra now.

We were dreadful from the wings tonight lads barely able to get the crosses in half the time. We spent too much time fecking about on the wings rather than make a move and getting the ball in early.

Neither Valencia nor Nani seemed to remember how to be really good wingers. Credit to Baines and Pienaar though they worked their fecking socks off.

Everton defender Leighton Baines says he heard nothing from Manchester United over the summer despite being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made tentative enquiries over the 27-year-old early in the transfer window but was put off by the reported £15million asking price, according to reports.

But Baines insists he was in the dark over United's apparent interest and does not believe the speculation held much weight.

He said: "People were asking me and yet I didn't know anything. It was getting mentioned that often that I was getting puzzled by it and yet I'd heard nothing.

"As far as I knew, there was not a great deal in it."

While Baines remains happy at Goodison Park, the defender admits his ambitious nature means a spot in Europe and silverware is on his wishlist with Everton.

He said: "I've never been one to rock the boat. I appreciate the position I'm in in life and I love what I do.

"At the same time you do have to have that ambition because it doesn't last long and before you know it it'll be over.

"The ambition for Everton is to finish as high as we can and if we can build on what we've done so far we have a chance of getting back towards European football."

Seems to me a little disappointed that there was no truth to it.

Also saw some comments from Distin on sky sports news about how good he thinks Baines is. He says he believes Baines has no weakness at all. Great on the pitch defending, going forward and off the pitch always in the gym.

Baines currently has the most key passes and crosses of any player in the league this season and showed how good he is defensively vs Nani and Valencia.

The vast majority of those 'key passes' will be crosses that resulted in a goal scoring chance. Baines is currently better than Evra, at least.

I would have Baines over Evra considering how Evra seems to lost his appetite for defending.

Evra was never a natural defender to begin with. Id always take him ahead of Baines. His pace etc means more to us that what Baines would bring to the team. Baines has been taken to the cleaners by a few wingers over the last couple of seasons. His mistakes just dont get the same attention as Evra's.

I dont think crosses count as key passes on whoscored.com which is where I got that info. For example look at James Morrison who has the 2nd highest crosses per game with 3. His key passes per game is 2. Work that one out.
