Leighton Baines

Assuming we're interested in said player, it could be Sir Alex sending Everton a signal that we have other alternatives if they don't lower their demands.

I can't quote you, something's wrong with the Caf again.

I don't mean Ferguson needs to be around to sign a player, but he likes to have it all finished before the tour starts. You're right though, I forgot Baines was at Euro 2012. I don't know what to think, really. I don't expect us to sign Baines, so I'm worried that we're (probably) going to have only Evra as a proper left-back, because he never gets injured, Fergie's playing with fire here. That also means he's going to play every game, even if his form is terrible.

Pogue, I know Evans can play left-back, but it's not long-term solution.
Fabio?

I have to be honest, I really dont see how we're supposed to use Baines long term if we got as much faith in Fabio as it seems to me that we do. Buying Baines this summer will mean that Evra will have to leave in a year or two, as I dont see how we're supposed to fit all of Fabio, Baines and Evra into the team over the season. If we're supposed to rotate Fabio and Rafael at right back, it might make sense.

Baines is the interim player between Evra and Fabio. There is still probably 3 years before Fabio is a world class wing back if at all. In the mean time Evra probably has about a year left at the top level if that.

I dont agree that Evra only got a year left in him. Besides that, we need to give Fabio gametime when he returns from his loan and how he's supposed to get more gametime when competing against Baines and Evra when he returns is beyond me. Fabio might be a few years away from being 'world class', but to reach that level he needs to get games. I'd rather hope that Brady, Blackett and the likes will be a decent enough cover for Evra this season and then have Fabio fight it out with Pat the season after this.

Evra's game rely heavily on pace and that's the first to go with age. If we get Baines then i wont be surprised if Evra leaves next season. Lets face it, Baines is good, but he's no Maldini. If Fabio does well then the chances of him becoming first teamer is reasonably high. By the time that happens Baines will be 32, Blackett will 22, Fabio will be 26 and Nani will be 29...

Do we really think that Fabio wants to be a backup until he's 26? He's way too talented for that in my opinion.

Why will it take 4 years for Fabio to become good?

I love the way people catagorise players into first teamers and back up, in reality thats not the way it is in the modern game.

The question should be, does Fabio need exposure to more regular first team football?

Baines or no Baines the answer to that is yes. Seeing as players are most often picked on form the chances of him getting games here with Evra ahead of him right now is pretty slim. Baines will provide more realistic competition for now, then Fabio comes back with the experience he needs and is better able to compete for a spot.

Philip Neville was a 'reserve' but he still played with United for over 250 games. Same as OShea who was rarely a first teamer with us. That's the beauty of being a versatile player.

Dont worry too much about Fabio. If he's good enough then he'll play. Just ask Danny Welbeck whose fresh from sending a 30m player on the bench.

I'm not sure we can expect the same level of loyalty from Fabio as we did from Phil or O'Shea though.

Wonder how good Brady is at tracking back and tackling , one things for sure we won't be signing Baines.

Why? Phil and OShea had great careers with United. They wrote their name in the club's history, they played for over 250 games at United and they won some important honors in the process. Fabio should consider himself lucky if he's able to emulate that.

At this stage, his only concern should be that of impressing the gaffer and remain fit. If he's good enough then rest assured that the gaffer will play him. Welbeck is a clear example of that.

Works his arse off, will probably be used to it after playing so many games in the championship last season. He likes to tackle both the ball and the player! The left back thing is interesting, just hope he displays a bit more maturity if things dont go his way...

If we ever signed Baines it would be for a 1st team LB IMO as we all know that Evra has been a liability at times last season. Evra is great going forward and still has pace but he just got caught out way too many times, which we all said but many seem to have forgotten after time. SAF has no doubt seen it too and after Evra been a great servant for so long, a brilliant buy for us, he's probably thinking its time for someone fresh. If Leighton, or whoever we get could be even half as good as Evra has been for us then it'll be a great move. Fabio is injury prone and again, looks good going forward, good technique but is dodgy at covering so having him and Rafael on either side could be madness.

People are doing the go-compare thing and pricing Baines up against Alba etc but Jordi is a relatively new to the scene, he's younger where as Baines has played loads of games for Everton and more importantly in the PREMIER LEAGUE. He's established player so would be no surprise to seen him go for more than £10m. Besides, Everton will not want to lose him, low contract or not, they'll want to convince him to stay beyond that. Signing players from the PL is less risk than players from abroad, especially less experience ones.

Evra is only 31 so by no means done and dusted yet but you have to worry about how much he leaves us exposed. But Vidic being back may change all that and bring calm. Who knows.

I'm disappointed by the transfer activity so far TBH. :( And rumours seem to be tailing off too.

A small bit of a story in the Telegraph says that we are yet to make any contact with Everton, which kind of makes large parts of this thread bullshit...

Most journos on twitter say there's been no contact at all - or even any interest from the club in Baines. Like Burrow and a few others I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't buy a left back before the transfer window closes.

The Baines stories are mainly fueled by the media guessing that we'll be making a signing there due to Fabio being loaned out, and partly fueled by Baines' agent.

I'd be shocked. We have just 1 LB.

There was a big piece in the Times a few days ago that we were going to bid, co-written by Rory Smith who's on Twitter. So I don't think it's just appeared out of thin air

He looked slow up against Abate, embarrassingly slow. Never noticed it before Downing roasted him a couple of times last season but it would be a real weak point, and he obviously can't give us what Evra gives us going forward.

In all honesty we'd need him to defend more than anything else, Evra's way better going forward without a doubt, but he still doesn't add that much more in attack to justify his lack of presence in defense (and I'm a big fan of his).
His runs are good, but he always does the same thing afterwards (send a low cross in the box) and it only works out like 1/10 times.
And on top of that, I think this year we shouldn't really have a problem scoring goals :)

United prepare Baines offer

Manchester United's summer transfer business may not be finished yet, as ESPN understands the club is considering a last attempt to sign Leighton Baines from Everton.

Besides the fact he is short of options at left-back, Sir Alex Ferguson is a known admirer of Baines as a player and even considered a bid in January of this year.

I think the money from the rodwell deal has put an end to Everton needing to sell Baines.

We have been preparing a bid for a few months if the journos are to be believed.

Not heard of us making any moves for a left back either since the start of the summer so it doesn't look likely that he will leave.
