Leighton Baines

15 million?

Feck off

I'd pay 15m for him. I think that Evra, despite his goals and assists this season is a serious liability defensively, we are shocking at the back and I am looking at Ferdinand and Evra. Baines is one of the best left backs in Europe. I think that he would add to our team.

The price is not shocking. And if we needed a left back I would be happy with Baines.

But we don't. I hope Evra stays for at a least another 2 seasons.

I agree with Jimy Hill though: Evra has been a defensive liability this season. He's improved his goal-threat, credit to him for that, but defensively he's regressed even further to the extent that we seem to be playing three at the back in many games. The space opposing wingers and full backs have been getting down his left side, often completely unchallenged, is causing us real problems imo.

Evra has improved quite a bit over last season defensively. Our problems at the back have been in the centre.

I don't see any improvement. Central defenders are inherently reliant on the performance of their fullbacks, and Evra has been featherweight when it comes to defending his line for a long while now. He's the obvious weak link in the team for me. I'm a big fan of Baines, yet Buttner has impressed also; he seems to possess that aggression and fight in the defensive phase that the younger Evra boasted; whilst Fabio again would be immense if he could match his brother's performances. I don't think Evra should be getting as many games as he does, but I'd look towards Buttner or Fabio before splashing £15m on Baines.

Not at LB, no.

Duh. But there was a lot of talk that an aging player for big money while you're well stocked in that area wasn't a good idea. But RVP has came and is already the pivotal figurehead in your title charge.

Baines could hypothetically do the same considering he's the best LB in the league, much like RVP is the best striker in the league.

Yeah, as I said above, I'm a big fan of Baines, I certainly wouldn't be complaining if we signed him. In the summer I was all for it, but my enthusiasm has waned a little since seeing Buttner play and how quickly Rafael has matured on the other side; These days I'm leaning more towards giving one of Fabio or Buttner a decent run of games rather than making the big money Baines signing. I believe now that getting Fabio to Rafael's level of performance should be our priority, and I'm not sure signing Leighton Baines would be wholly beneficial in that regard. The sooner Fabio comes back from that scummy club QPR the better imo; stick a United shirt on him and let him run out with his brother.

Steve McManaman, explaining the rationale behind this transfer on ESPN during the match today, said Baines is "5, 6, 7 years younger than Evra"

 Evra is 32 and Baines is 28 going on 29, isn't he?

I like Baines. I wasn't for his signing in the summer but I've since converted. If he comes for ~10M it's a bargain

Buy this man a drink!

I'd really hate to precipitate the demise of Evra, but 15m for Baines would be a steal.

But what about Buttner? Fabio?

And can we not spend 15m for a more pressing need?

Baines is a superb footballer. Great football brain for a left back. Looks a dream to manage too. He'd be an upgrade on Evra in my book.

15 million is more than reasonable price for him right now. It's a case of taking him now or never because I don't think he will be worth buying in two years time or so.

He's probably the best crosser in the league but we've no need for him, if we're buying a new left back it'll be one who'll be first choice for us for the next 5 years+ and I don't see Baines doing that. When's the last time we've bought a fullback as old as Baines?

Impressed me each time I've watched him. Excellent, and in an understated way.

He is almost like a playmaker from left back. And his delivery is always dangerous.

If we didn't have Evra I would seriously be an advocate for the transfer.

With Evra, Buttner and Fabio in the squad I don't see why we'd be out looking for another LB.

Neither do i, but then again Evra is coming to the end, and there are huge question marks over whether either of Buttner or Fabio can take over and become our established LB for the next few years.

Baines is well established, there is no doubt he has the quality. The only question really is whether he is good enough to justify the fee being asked, if the rumours of £15m are accurate.

I don't think Buttner will ever be good enough, big question marks over Fabio as well.

It depends how long Evra has left. If for some reason he leaves in the summer, I'd take Baines in a heartbeat even for 15 million. Might not make too much sense in 2 or more years, but I think he'll move to a bigger club sooner than that anyway.

People laughed last year if you claimed he was the best LB in the league. He's probably the best full back in the league let alone LB.

He's been really good this season to be fair, the free kick tonight was brilliant. I was one who didn't want us to pay £20m for him I think that's over priced but id have him at United any day.

Top player, i think he needed a good year this year to prove he could sustain his ability that he seemed to find last year; and he has done that with flying colours so far.

I do think that £20m would be a fair price for him, his ability down the left would suit us massively, and his free kick ability is worth that sort of money alone.

 @ the power of his free-kick tonight.

EDIT Still doesn't beat his scorcher against us at DW back in his Wigan days. I was genuinely  at the time.

His consistency and basically most of his game reminds so much of Denis Irwin. Not to mention his free kicks and penalty ability, which were also a feature of Irwin's game. The only difference is that Irwin was right footed, but played mainly at left back.

Can't see us replacing Evra with him given his age and price.

We're only entering the 28 year old £15m+ markets for the likes of RVP. It's not even like Evra's legs have gone in any way.
