Suprise round you say....
@antohan and other 'shadowers' probably more interesting if you were to form a team with picks not taken by the person you are shadowing.. so like if MJJ took Best then you can't take him etc.
It's not too complicated and would allow 18, 19 or 25 managers.
larger-than-the-normal 16-team draft
Feck. I'm so not bothered about what others do that I didn't even check or realise he could get picked. Balls, never had Don Alfredo.
- Chesterlestreet - 1. J Zanetti 2. A Di Stefano[/USER]
There are different factors to consider here
1) Type of pool. - Ideally an all time or open pool would be necessary. If we do it in a closed pool, we may end up scraping the barrel to say and that would take away interest in the draft.
2) Match Count - More managers means more matches. Considering the lack of interest and need to amend match thread, I'm not sure if this would add value.
3) Odd men out - Only certain managers will have extra round. It will be random, but not sure if it's equal to all.
I don't get it (the surprise round I mean)
@Edgar Allan Pillow what happens if more than one manager gets it right or many get the same distance from right answer? (very likely to happen)
@Edgar Allan Pillow How the ties would be broken for special round ? That is many people predicting correct / similarly worse roll.
1) You don't end up scraping the barrel. Every shadow manager is picking from what is available at the same time as the designated one. You don't need bigger pools than the one available, just has that side-effect that you may get several clones materialising.
2) Maybe the Shadow vs. Designated can be dealt with more succintly (rank/short poll).
3) Don't see a big issue with that. Frankly, people just want to draft and the games are a necessary evil to elicit certain discussions. By the way, there's no way I want this trialed now. No games for me, thank you very much.
It would actually be very interesting to see how different teams materialise from managers in the exact same picking order, box and pools available. Chester just screwed it up a little bit though, I was hoping for a fork here with MJJ but we'll probably end up with the same geezer now (again).
Ah thanks. So it's either Yashin or Djemba X2 in particular. If you guess right you get Yashin (it's a keeper so won't make a huge difference, although @Stobzilla will disagree). If you get it wrong you have some useless bag of shit on the bench to serve refreshments for everyone.
Will it affect the next picks or you just get that bonus player and 1 pick less in the end?
Isn't the shadow draft a bit like wanking in the corner while watching your wife get pummeled by another man on your king-size bed?
How about shadow managers changing picks midway as they see how rest have drafted? If it's not followed by someone on what shadow managers pick in the process it may cause problems.
Doesn't feel like that at all. The dynamic is very different as I'm not bothered what others do as I won't have to play them. All I'm doing is drafting without a care in the world.Isn't the shadow draft a bit like wanking in the corner while watching your wife get pummeled by another man on your king-size bed?

Plus, I'm not entirely sure what happens if we do get the same 5-6 players and they are all crucial ones - how do we replace them?

Shadow managers is not a fleshed out concept. For the purpose of this draft, it'll just be those not participating to keep themselves interested. Their presence will not impact this draft and they will not be allowed to post their teams till drafting is over. Once done, it can be used to see if the participating manager could have drafted better or something like that.
BTW, I'm actually testing this as an option for the usual problem of people signing up late. With a first round of ranking prior to quarters between the top 8 clearly not finding much favour, we are back to square one re: number of managers being fixed and every man and his dog becoming an AM.
In variations of this format specifically (doesn't work with sheep, auction, etc. should be fine for snakes though). Why not have 16 signing up and then any spillovers choosing or being assigned a manager to shadow? What you can have then is a preliminary round whereby shadows play vs. the designated manager? Whoever drafted better stays on. There's two minor glitches:
1) The teams could be very similar (but if you do it your way that's a major handicap for shadows)
2) Since the shadow picks don't withdraw players from the pool you could end up with more than one side sporting the same player. Not a biggie, so long as when shadow teams crash out they only release their unique players (i.e. those no one picked or the ones they shared with the original manager) into the reinforcement pool.
