Lars Bender

really like Lars Bender, would be ideal signing for defensive midfielder, a quality mobile player, who is prepared to do all the dirty work while others players take the plaudits.

would work great with herrera, (would be a far more balanced combination then herrera/vidal)but dosn't look like where in for him, but then thier wasn't any rumors about herrera before it was pretty much confirmed so you never know.

but whatever i hope aresnal don't get him, think he would improve them and make the midfield far more balanced.

Thought I give a little update about him.

Yesterday Leverkusen´s head of football Rudi Völler answered some questions about the ongoing rumours especially concerning Arsenal:

Appearantly there is no offer for him by any club at the moment. According to Völler Bender himself is happy at Leverkusen and intends to stay. Furthermore, Leverkusen has absolutely no intention of selling him.

Bender has currently a contract until 2019 and while a release clause is rumoured to be included the focus on having no offer would implicate that said clause does not trigger this Summer.

This will make a transfer in this Summer unlikely or at least very expensive for whoever intends to sign him.

That's good to hear, i'd rather they signed Khedira.

We've been after Bender for ages, doesn't look likely even if we pay over the odds - the Germans always seem to want to add Wengertax (see £37m for Draxler)

Link from today's BBC Gossip Column, admittedly it's the Sunday People:

Bayer Leverkusen and Germany midfielder Lars Bender, 25, is now a transfer target for Manchester United after Roma's Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman suffered a new injury setback. (Sunday People)

This season Leverkusen have been the new Dortmund. High pressing all over the pitch has lead to the most quick transitions to shots ratio in the league. Bender has been an essential part of that. More statistical details can be found here. 25 appearances this season so far with an average rating on WhoScored of 7.40. Only 5 yellows with 0 reds in a very combative role is a good return so far too.

Obligatory YouTube video with terrible music:

He is a solid box to box midfielder and not as injury prone as his twin brother at Dortmund. I think he could do well in the PL. If van Gaal is looking for a second midfielder that is solid defensively to play next to Carrick or Blind I think Bender would be a good choice.

Just seems too restricted to ever be a top player for me, needs more to his game then aggressiveness and a good shot (I know that's a slight exaggeration).

thats what van Gaal wants, a restricted CM. Look what he does with Ander, Pogba will never be a target therefore.

We need a number 8 not Zidane. Once we get a form of balance we can look for worldclass luxury.

A bit limited passer and not a creative player, but a beast defensively and hardest working player on the pitch. He would give our creative players maximum freedom with a player like Blind/Carrick besides him.

At the start of the season Id have been reluctant, but having seen Blind, Id be more than happy to get another consistent 7.5 performer in the midfield. I trust van gaals ability to choose a midfielder, if Benders his choice, im fine with it.

He'd be a very welcome addition to the squad and having one German in the team would make Man Utd more attractive for other Germans that Van Gaal could be interested in. That happened last summer when Di Maria didn't seem too bothered about us but once we landed Rojo then that all changed

For what it's worth I think we could do with another ball winner in midfield, especially one that is so well drilled and effective with it. If we're lining up to a 4-1-2-3 or a 4-2-3-1 next season then there's no doubt Bender could play the deeper role or a double pivot with Blind.

As you see with Chelsea, having a dedicated ball winner in Matic provides a level of protection to the defences fragilities (pace with JT) and limits the amount of defensive work the AM's need to do, thus maintaining attacking threat high up the pitch. I see no reason why Bender couldn't perform this function or at least improve the squad with his arrival.

I certainly wouldn't complain at a line up like this (I would prefer ADM in the middle but if he can drift about the pitch a la Hazard then it could work well). Doesn't give us great height though.

He'd probably make us more secure at OT. After all, if you've got a bender in your team you're unlikely to be homephobic.

I don't get why we are looking abroad if all he wants is a solid and unspectacular CM to do the grunt work alongside Blind, Schneiderlin and McCarthy are right there and PL proven, Bender is no better than either, in fact I'd say he's inferior to Schneiderlin on the ball.

And both will probably cost three times the money, given the ridiculous prices paid for mediocrity in the PL.

I'd say all 3 players in question here top out at £30M, clubs are greedy but not stupid enough to think they are getting Pogba or Koke money for any of these guys.

Want Lars Bender and Schniederlin as our midfielders for next season. Both of them will provide a solid foundation for both attack and defense.
