Lars Bender

Even if they don't sign him it shows some intent at least. They've done a great job so far of getting rid of the deadwood and if they can sign a couple of top class players as well as Higuain they could be a threat. I think Wenger sees this season as an oppurtunity to really do something with the other top clubs being in transition.

Lets hope this doesn't happen.

I think we will see him move next summer, this summer as Balu said Leverkusen has lost already too many good players with Schürrle and Carvajal who were important players last year and if they would lose Bender as well they could kiss their chances of a CL qualification goodbye.

But if it's true that he has the 15m € buy out clause for 2014 I'm sure he won't be a Leverkusen player next season (2014/15).

Jazz you may want to cool the heat on buying Lars. Unless Bayer find a replacement for him, you might as well look for other targets.

Oh I'm not expecting this one to happen, I see us making one but if we are lucky two big signings this summer and that is all.

Interesting, if this bid is true maybe Wenger is changing our midfield dynamic. Possibly looking at a Arteta+Bender or more likely a Wilshere+Bender CM pairing for the future. I did feel in the big games it let us down so possibly looking to rectify that. Definitely need another CM as urgently as we need a striker imo.

If we have gone in with an £18mill bid it does indicate we might be willing to raise that because you would think we would know they won't accept that. Well knowing our lot and how we conduct our affairs we might be trying it on!

Aren't they backed by some rich company or something? Can't remember if it is car or medical company
Wilshere + Lars Benders would be  . Sounds like a perfect fit to me. But I really think that it's more important for Leverkusen to find a quality replacement than getting 5m more out of the transfer and I doubt they find one soon enough to allow him to leave.

They are backed by Bayer, a pharmaceutical company. But it's not a huge deal, they get a sponsoring deal which is a bit over the top for a club of Leverkusen's size and standing. Other than that they have to work self-sufficient.

I can't imagine him playing abroad for some weird reason - just a feeling, could be totally wrong about it. Wouldn't be surprised if he plays for Schalke next season, he'd be perfect for them along all the great young attacking talents. Imagine Lars and Goretzka in the same team? Oh and imagine games against Dortmund with Lars vs Sven in midfield. Great stuff, usually I'm completely wrong with transfer predicitions though.

Actually I could see him joining his brother in Dortmund if Real wants Sahin back or if they buy Gündogan. Non the less I wouldn't put it past him that he would join Arsenal next year, I actually think he is the kind of player who would relish the challenge of playing for one of the top clubs in the PL.

But I guess he will have all options open next summer if he keeps improving I bet almost any European top club are going to chase him.

Oh and if I remember correctly Sammer is valuing him very highly so I wouldn't put it past Bayern to try and get him again, as long as Guardiola isn't putting a veto in.

I thought about him joining Dortmund or Bayern but I can't really see him starting with his brother or with Martinez. How would that work? And he fits perfectly into Schalke's team, imo.

I thought Dortmund have a buyout clause in Sahin's contract? So it's Dortmund's decision if he stays or goes back, not Real's or Sahin's?

He's talking about them playing against each other in a local derby.
Yes, thanks.

Sorry if that wasn't clear. Dortmund and Schalke have the biggest rivalry in german football and one of the twins playing at each of these teams could be interesting.

Renewed his contract at Leverkusen until 2019 today.

There goes my dream of seeing both Bender twins at Dortmund :(, but oh well. Would have also been a great fit at United IMO.

Fantastic for Leverkusen, though. He has become their most important player over the years. Class attitude and very well rounded midfielder. Still underrated in my book just like Leverkusen itself. Their development in the recent years was largely overshadowed by the rise of Dortmund, but is still very impressive. Maybe the current situation in the league (Bayern, Dortmund and Leverkusen building the top group and outclassing the rest) is an indication for them becoming the clear number three in Germany in the following years.

A pair of Benders could have been very leaky at the back.

They look well positioned to qualify from the group stages having beaten Sociedad and Shakhtar at home so they might make an impression in Champions League as early as this season. If they can get a result in Donetsk and they ought to seeing as they battered them 4-0 at home they'll basically be as good as through.

Would be a great signing for Arsenal. I rate both Arteta and Flamini highly (especially Flamini, been surprised at how well he's done since his return) but neither of them are young men.

Normally I'd say 'but why are they spending their precious funds on more midfielders when they badly need more options up front and on the wing?' But it sounds like this season Wenger's going to have some funds to work with, so £17m is a decent price.

One of my mates who's a Liverpool fans says that they've been linked with him too.

Seems to me he would be a good player for us, Liverpool and Arsenal, something we all need.

In Arsenals case, they really should go all in for a player in that position who is quality and young, like Bender. Especially if they intend to continue their way of playing football after Arsene calls it a day. Because of their offensive players they really need that dynamic ballwinner who can give some commands to get people into position (like Flamini now does).
17 million will be rejected i believe, but they should go as high as 25 milion at least before giving up on that kind of player.
Unless they see an immediate end to Diaby's injury proneness.

According to Kicker magazine, his thigh injury will make him pause for about 3 months. If correct, he may not have fully recovered when Leverkusen plays Champions League qualifications games (play offs on Aug 18/19 and 26/27).

Is that why he wasn't selected for the WC squad or would he not have made it even if fit?

Lars was actually selected but got injured during second training session in the WC training camp.

His twin, Sven, wasn't selected for the provisional squad because he hadn't fully recovered from an injury.

Oh my bad. Didn't remember seeing his name in the original squad.

Had a poor season by his standards, and they're not really similar players anyway. Bender's more of a box-to-box as opposed to Carvalho who's been used as an out and out DM.

He's a DM who can be box to box and isn't as limited as someone like Carvalho and he has fantastic strike on him.

I'd rather have Sven, if I gotta be honest. And if we're looking for someone to play the defensive role, we can always turn to Carras whose actually been doing this job, whilst hes been our playmaker the past two seasons.

Bender would be a brilliant signing but 21m seems a bit make-belief. I think he is one of the better players in the world for the defensive box to box role.

Would take him in a heartbeat. It would pretty much spell the end of Fletcher and Carrick in the first team. Two dynamic players with B2B ability that are capable of defending at a good enough level to transition to a dedicated ball winner in a 4-3-3. Perfect. Fellaini and Cleverley as the rotational options would be a pretty good base point to start the season. Plenty of experience in Carrick and Fletcher to be the extra legs and build combinational roles through the season.
