Arsenal's £18.5m bid for Lars Bender rejected by Bayer Leverkusen

• Bundesliga side say Germany midfielder is not for sale
• Goalkeeper Vito Mannone sold to Sunderland for £2m

Arsenal's attempt to strengthen their midfield have been frustrated after Bayer Leverkusen knocked back an approach for the Germany international Lars Bender. The club have, however, signed the French French youth international striker Yaya Sanogo as a free agent after leaving Ligue 2 team Auxerre.
The Gunners had hoped to secure the 24-year-old, whose twin brother Sven plays at Borussia Dortmund, for about €23m (£18.5m) but the Bundesliga club quickly turned down the inquiry and have since made it clear Bender is not for sale at any price. Leverkusen sold André Schürrle to Chelsea and Dani Carvajal to Real Madrid earlier in the summer and are not under financial pressure to move on more of their first-team squad.
That represents a blow for Arsène Wenger, whose transfer policy this close season has always been geared towards strengthening the spine of his side with a striker, a central midfielder and an experienced goalkeeper his priorities.
Real's Gonzalo Higuaín is set to join for £22m up front while a deal for Queens Park Rangers' Júlio César, the Brazil No1, for around £1.5m is also close, but other options will now have to be pursued in midfield. A late attempt to secure the France international Etienne Capoue from Toulouse failed on transfer deadline day in January, and Wenger remains interested in Dortmund's Ilkay Gündogan and the Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini.
Arsenal are understood to be reluctant to meet the £24m release clause – which applies to Champions League clubs and expires in mid-August – in the Belgian's contract, and the Merseysiders are in no rush to sell Fellaini.
Arsenal have succeeded in loaning their Switzerland defender Johan Djourou to Hamburg on a 12-month arrangement while the third-choice goalkeeper, Vito Mannone, has joined Sunderland for a fee of around £2m.
Sanogo joins on a long-term deal having made 24 first team appearances for Auxerre and scoring 11 goals.

How good is he? I've seen more of his brother and he looks very good and I've heard Lars is just as good if not better.
Unlucky for Arsenal that Leverkuson don't need to sell after getting rid of Schurrle and their right back for decent money.

I hope Arsenal don't get him. Would love either of them here, but Sven is injury prone (albeit a couple of injuries being bad face injuries which was just bad luck). I'd imagine they've given up on Fellaini.

He's a lot better than Fellaini but isn't going anywhere unfortunately.

Don't see Arsenal meeting Leverkusen's valuation. They're more likely to sign Fellaini.

[muppetmode] Someone better pull their finger out and get some god damn signings happening [/muppetmode]

Definitely better than Fellaini, and I'd imagine he'd be available for around the same price as Fellaini's release. I can't see Arsenal paying 25 odd million for either though.

+ standard joke about Arse excited over incoming Bender.

Is he worth that kind of money? If the money is there like we are being told then I don't see how we aren't able to pay a premium price for a player we want.

In today's market I'd say he's worth it. With the money City payed for Fernandinho, I think £25m would be a good signing. He's good on the ball, will run all day and is positionally very good. Comparing him with Sven, he's also better going forward and is capable of scoring goals. If Wenger is interested in Fellaini for a holding midfield role, then Bender would be a far better signing.

At 24 anything under 25m would be a great signing I reckon. If he doesn't fit and leaves in a year or two he's at an age where Arsenal would be able to get a good price for him, but I don't see any reason why he couldn't hack it in the Premier League.

Good player, quite a few all-round decent midfielders have been successful in the Premier League without being particularly spectacular.

We're past the days where 20m+ is limited to world-class flair players.

Bloody hell.. Arsene splashing the cash?
Probably just preparing for his time at PSG

He is a terrific player; the best German central midfielder not named Bastian or İlkay. No way he is going to go for £18.5m.

Leverkusen can offer pretty much the same things as Arsenal, it would be a sideways move for him. I am sure, if he was available, bigger clubs will be vying for his signature.

The German paper that reported it are suppose to be reliable and have said Leverkusen have flat out said no and not a case of them trying to get more money. As they've sold two players for decent money they don't desperately need the money either

There are a few German posters here, love to hear their opinion of him

We should try to sign him, actually his brother too...

Thiago, Bender and Bender

Afaik he has a release clause for €15m in his contract that can be triggered in 2014. So most likely he will leave next season. Bayern tried to sign him last season for about 25m if I remember correctly but Leverkusen rejected the offer, so Bayern went on to buy Martinez.

who's the better player? Lars or Sven?
Lars is more of a box to box player, he offers a lot more going forward and he played as a right full back a few times as well, scored a great goal in the Euros against Denmark playing as a full back.
Sven is more the typical defensive mid, more of a destroyer who win's the ball back for your team.

Depends what your team need or what type of midfielder you want. Both are damn good and it's ridiculous that Khedira is still playing next to Schweinsteiger in the german nationalteam. A midfield of Lars Bender and Schweinsteiger wouldn't be too different than the Schweinsteiger/Martinez midfield at Bayern, imo.

I rate him very highly.

Like his twin brother Sven an absolute workhorse of a player but a very intelligent one that doesn't run around without any purpose like a headless chicken, he is also a bit more versatile than Sven and provides more to the team when going forward.

He is a great all round central midfielder that can also play as a right defender if needed but in today's market I doubt he will be available for less than 40m €.

When Bayern tried to get him a year ago when it looked like the Martinez deal would fall through Bayer responded that they would demand the same amount of money Bayern had to pay for Martinez and that's why they turned back to Martinez.

Edit: just saw that with the 15m € buy out clause in 2014 for that price I guess quite a lot of teams will become interested fairly soon.

Edit 2: If I had to compare them to two more well known players I would say Sven is more like Martinez and Lars is more like Vidal but a slight level below the two.

Balu, do you think if we upped our offer they'd be tempted to sell or are the quite adamant he is not going to leave?

I think we might be after him to replace Arteta, do you think in a deeper role breaking up attacks and starting them off he could do well there?

I guess the thing in our favor here is this clause. Maybe they will be more willing to sell for bigger money if the threat of him leaving at the end of the season for £14 million becomes likely - he'd have to ask to leave it seems.

Those Leverkusen guys are really stubborn, so no, I don't think they'll sell, at least not without a significantly higher offer and a quality replacement available. They want to have a good team and finish top4 next season and I think they really need him to achieve that. Dortmund and Bayern are clearly better teams, Schalke has a better squad as well and Gladbach is imo at least on a comparable level now. Loosing Lars now with the team already in training and the first game in less than 5 weeks could cost them a lot more money than selling him next season for less money. And Lars isn't the kind of player who will force his way out by putting pressure on his club.

No and no. Bayer will not lower their price, like Balu said they are stubborn and no he is not an Arteta kind of player, like I said more like Vidal.

The Larsge Bender is on the right, don't know who the bloke on left is.

Interesting, if this bid is true maybe Wenger is changing our midfield dynamic. Possibly looking at a Arteta+Bender or more likely a Wilshere+Bender CM pairing for the future. I did feel in the big games it let us down so possibly looking to rectify that. Definitely need another CM as urgently as we need a striker imo.

If we have gone in with an £18mill bid it does indicate we might be willing to raise that because you would think we would know they won't accept that. Well knowing our lot and how we conduct our affairs we might be trying it on!

Aren't they backed by some rich company or something? Can't remember if it is car or medical company

Another thing that goes in our favour is unlike many clubs we are in a position to offer a lot more upfront payments. We got Cazorla on the cheap because we supposedly coughed up the whole fee upfront, that cash reserve we are sitting on might come in useful in situations where you want to bring down the overall fee.

Arsenal trying to sign a midfielder. *sob*

Those were the days.... :(

I'm trying my best not to get too excited but all these rumours are breaking my resistance! We gooners have been here before, it usually doesn't end well!

Jazz you may want to cool the heat on buying Lars. Unless Bayer find a replacement for him, you might as well look for other targets.
