Kylian Mbappe | PSG

At the club level, Mbappe had already shined in big games since he was 18 whether it is against City, Real, Juve, Bayern or Barca. And only a few all time greats can rival his NT career. He is unmatched in that regard in the new generation. This is a comparison among the current best players in Europe "now" (Messi is not a part of the comparison due to him kind of quitting and leaving Europe).

Remove Mbappe from PSG, PSG would fail in the group stage. Bring Vinicius to PSG, and see what he can do there. Any team given the chance would kill to sign Mbappe over any other forward including Real.

Vinicius has been the most decisive player in the UCL in the past 3 years. 30 G/A in 30 games. He also offers much more than Mbappé for the team, notably pressing and tracking back.

Actually, they did fail with him, and he was bad there as well, ref invented a penalty to see them through.

And no, its not really for footballing reasons RM wants him, its because Perez can't quite let go of galactico-era.

No, he hasn't "always shined", this is the 2nd year running he does basically nothing in the knock-outs, Mbappe isn't progressing at all, if anything he is going the opposite way.

Ok, great then tell us how Haaland last year was doing in 7 semis & finals last year in the treble winning season (supposedly the best player in the world along with Messi last year).

Tell us how Vinicius has been doing with the Brazil NT in 27 games - 3 goals (the same number Mbappe scored in a single game in the WC final)
or whoever else you have in your books.

Even Messi the GOAT or Maradona had many games where they were heavily criticized in some knockout games at both the club or NT level, these are not robots. If you apply the same standards to others, you'd consider them all failures with way more frequency as well.

I thought we were talking about club football?

Again, i don't care about international football, what Mbappe does for France is irrelevant to me, at club football he is rather underwhelming imo.

It's hard to see anything hes improved upon in his time at PSG. He has rested on his pace more and more instead of working on the rest of his game. Such a talented player who has wasted the most important developmental years of his career in a third rate league. Should have gone to a bigger club 3 years ago, it will be interesting to see how he does at Madrid and whether he is able to catch up.

You know that there is always a bias for forwards in these comparisons.
I was saying similar things for City's treble season like many, that Rodri and KDB were the best players at City and not Haaland.

Regardless, Mbappe had much less flaws compared to others in the same generation (like Vinicius, Bellingham, Haaland etc.) in terms of showing up in the biggest stages both at the NT level and club level. There's a reason why Real never gave up on him despite his arrogance.
Agreed. I would push silva into that as well, I think he's amazing.

We should sign this guy why???? Let it go Flo. Let it goooo

Tell him Elsa!

Still the best player in the world in general but disappointing how much he has stagnated. Figured he had it in him to be an all timer but I guess Messi and Cristiano really warped my perception too

It's going to be quite an adjustment period. A lot of the names being bandied about in this thread are...underwhelming.

Quite surprised over the course of these two legs how wide he was.
Only in the last 20 minutes he was instructed to get closer to Dortmund's goal and PSG looked a far bigger threat.

Probably doesn’t help that he doesn’t want to be at PSG, but for a whopper pile of cash.

He can't surpass Messi.

If he goes to Real, racks up a few CL titles(and continues his form for France), there won't be much between his career and CR7's to be honest. Mbappe might break all the World Cup records.

This is contingent on his stagnation being temporary though.

If he has a WC title and wins more CLs than Messi, why can he surpass Ronaldo but not him?

Rodri? Wirtz? Kane? Bellingham?

edit: Vini!
Please. He's comfortably better than all those guys. And some of the other names people are coming up with, like Odegaard and Foden FFS.....

Look, he didn't play well. No one plays well every game. But the insanity that people are spouting, stuff like he's 'underwhelming' for his club when he's scored (at age 25) almost 50 goals in the Champions League, more than the entire careers of Sheva, Ibra, Neymar, Inzaghi, Drogba, Del Piero, Aguero, Cavani, Eto'o, Rooney, Kaka and Suarez, well....it's pretty obvious that people are tucking into some hearty slices of nonsense pie tonight

Because Messi's got way more ability/talent than Mbappe? What does Mbappe do better than Messi on the field?

Mbappe/Ronaldo are actually close in talent/ability.

Because Messi is objectively better, Mbappé would have to get way better than this to reach that level, beyond trophies

I thought he played through the middle in the first leg and even today when he was in the left he was too narrow when high up the pitch and only went wide when he dropped deep to receive it, I was dissapointed how he wasn’t wide more often and running in behind to be honest

Messi is much more talented but I disagree that he’s close to Ronaldo talent wise. Not sure why Ronaldo’s talent gets underrated so much. He has a better first touch than Mbappe and relied on his pace less in his prime (better in tight spaces). Apart from the obvious ones like heading and FKs, he’s also a better crosser with better shooting technique from close and long range.

Mbappe isn't even top 10 all time to be honest, not when he's spent half his career at a farmer's league. If he's the best in the world right now, it's due to lack of competition.

Another big game, another non-entity

26 this year, no UCL, no Balon D'or and people really say wild things about him.

I think Madrid are making a mistake in getting him tbh, he'll upset whatever balance they now have, they're already top heavy and adding another forward who plays where Vini plays is ridiculous. Perhaps if they sell Vini it could work but yeah, not for me chief.

He has been good only against Sociedad and in one or two group stage game in this UCL.

Objectively, players like Odegaard and Foden have been playing at a higher level than him this season.

This forum does a great job of isolating player performance whilst ignoring the rest of the team.

This iteration of PSG is shit and nobody expected them to reach the semi finals 8 months ago, but now all of a sudden Mbappe is a failure because PSG didn’t win UCL? feck me.

Kane would have been perfect for them. They need a target man who can link up with the players around him.

Why are people here so reactionary?

Mbappe is one of the best big game players on the planet. This tie changes nothing.

Playing 45 domestic games in France every year and not win European trophies is underwhelming.
You can’t play football for a sportswashing mastodont on steroids in the 5th best league in Europe and expect to be considered the best in the world. His domestic tiltes and numbers means nothing in that picture. He could score 100 goals a season in France, but it would mean nothing, because it wouldn’t be on the highest level. He might have the talent, but needs to move to a better league to really test himself on club level.

You'll notice that I didn't actually mention anything about the French league. I think it is reductive and silly to act like the French league doesn't count, but let's leave it aside for argument's sake.

I talked about the Champions league. Which is the highest club level. Where has has scored close to 50 goals (basically as many as his legendary compatriot Thierry Henry, but in 40 less matches) and scored in every big stadium in Europe. And he's been doing that since he was 18 years old and playing for Monaco.

Add to that the fact that he has scored more goals in the World Cup final (by a country mile the biggest and most important game in football) than any player in history - more than Pele, more than Zidane, more than R9, more than Messi, more than Muller, more than anybody - and you can start to see that what are are saying about him not being tested is completely and utterly illogical.

Interesting take from you who thinks you can play football in the most dominant PL team ever with 115 charges, ghost in every single semis & finals, bailed out game in game out when it matters most by your teammates and be called the best in the world with 10 touches per game.

What test are you talking about? Mbappe had 74 g&a in 73 games in the CL, the highest level in the club football.

He has 23 g&a (20 goals and 3 assists) in 27 games in the UCL against the strongest UCL teams: Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern and Manchester City. Imagine calling Mbappe the WC icon, probably the greatest Ligue 1 player ever, easily one of the best UCL players ever, "not tested" in the club football  The funny thing is you used to call Haaland the ghost the best player in the world. Haaland is not even fit to lace Mbappe's boots when it comes to anything other than finishing. And these days, he can't even do that unless he''s facing Luton or Wolves.

Mbappe vs Real - 3 goals in 5 games
Mbappe vs Barca - 6 goals in 4 games
Mbappe vs CIty - 3 goals & 1 assist in 5 games
Mbappe against Bayern - 3 goals & 1 assist in 7 games
Mbappe vs Juve - 4 goals & 1 assist in 4 games
Mbappe against Liverpool - 1 goal in 2 games

At the end of his career, it's almost certain that he'd have multiple records in the WC (bar a career-ending injury), the most prestigious tournament of all time.. the bitterness is quite strong in your post.

He's not improving much since winning that young player award when France won that WC. He was just sensational.

Almost everyone thought that he'd hog Ballon d'Or for years, once Messi and Ronaldo were done. Staying in PSG really cost him as a player. Not so much to his wealth, though.

Classic Caf reactions.

It's mad to think he's already 26 and only now leaving France, there's no doubt its negatively impacted him as a player, but there's plenty of time for him to show how talented he is on a bigger stage. Fair to say he'll never get close to Messi and Ronaldo now though, but then was that ever really likely? Perhaps if he's skipped the PSG experiment entirely.
