Koeman: "If Rooney ever becomes an option for Everton, I would be very pleased."

I'd honestly give him away for free. Firstly we'd get his huge wage off the books, and secondly we'd be rid of a player who isn't good enough.

Managers and footballers love him. It's like they think they know more than arm-chair fans.

Don't like this even one bit. It feels wrong.

He's the last remnant of the club I started supporting, the last strong connection to the SAF era. He was my first United hero, liked him much more than Ronaldo. He's almost the top-scorer for the club, and has been the talisman of Man United for more than a decade now. He is nowhere good enough to be a starter for us, given his decline, but if we can keep him on as a squad player, I'd take that. Gives his 100%, every single time. We should let him retire here as a club legend, and get him a statue. Love him or hate him, this man has been a great servant of the club, a key member of Fergie's success in his last decade at the club.

Don't lynch me. I think I need to go watch that Watford game to overcome this unexpected nostalgia, and remember why I was frustrated with him for the past two seasons.

They'll be nothing sad about him leaving. What's sad is watching him play like a shadow of his former self. He's of no use to us anymore and he'd be better off elsewhere, for everyone's sake.

A statue? A feckin statue? Ffs this place.

I feel sorry for anyone who sees him as the last remnant of the club they supported. What a sad state of affairs

I won't go around defending him, we all know his abject performances from the last two seasons, bar a moment of brilliance here and there. And we know his contract haggling tales, too, when he threatened to leave for our rivals.

But ten years down the line, they will remember him as a CL winner, a serial PL winner, and the club and country top scorer. Of course he is a legend.

Anyway, I don't want to start this debate. Let's agree to disagree.

It'll be a sad day when Rooney leaves. My last memory of the good ol' SAF days.

There are a number of others in the squad who were signed under Fergie, like De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Jones and Young.

Rooney needs to go. Perhaps you would have felt better if Fergie did it himself, while it was still his 'era'. I believe it's commonly accepted that he tried to.

The big problem with everything you say is his wages. He's on maybe 3 times what he should be getting based on performance (and that's even if we're looking at premier league wage standards). So unless he's willing to take a huge wage cut and become a squad player, none of what you say is reasonable for either the club or for the player.

There's no logical reason to have a squad player who is 'nowhere near good enough' to start games.

Squad players are supposed to be good players who can do a job against anyone, not incredibly expensive and incredibly average players who are just kept around for sentimental reasons.

I didn't say he doesn't need to go but it will be a sad day. De Gea Smalling etc don't really remind me of SAF anymore to be honest.

They weren't as integral parts of the titles as Rooney was, obviously.

Yes, I probably would, if Fergie had done it himself.

Rooney needs to go, there is no doubt about that. Logically, it makes sense for us to sell him off, given his performances, his wages, the time left on his contract, his replacements and successors and his demands to play.

I'm just expressing nostalgia, and wish it weren't this way, given all the memories that he's been a part of, over the last decade. I wish we had a romantic ending for him at the club where he defined an era of football. Hence the desire for him to stay on as a squad player, despite his wages and performances. Sentimental reasons, obviously.

Rooney would be great in the MLS. No doubt about it. He'd been positionally and tactically, light years ahead of other players - and he's still got a really good work ethic on the field. Plus, without pressure on the ball, his pass is "amazing". Whoever signs him, would play him in a free role, and they'd get a terrific player for that level.

Let's not forget, he's had an amazing career. A pre-2013 Rooney, is one of the best I've seen in a United shirt. He's had his faults since then, but it's hard to question his commitment or desire on the field. Not sure about the stuff off it. Lots of speculation, but it's just that, speculation.

Denis Law had a statue, why wouldn't Rooney if he goes on to break the club scoring record?

I'm curious why it's acceptable for one but not another

This thread makes me sad.

The man is finished as far as top level football goes, but let's not forget what he's done for this club. Lets at least try to have a bit of class about one of our greatest ever players - yes, that is exactly what he is.

I'm not as negative to Rooney as most on here are, but.... i can't see him improving them.
Lukaku, Barkley, Deluoufluffysomething, are all better for Everton, in my opinion.
Unless he has some brilliant new idea to use him as 6 :)

Having a statue for a man who behaved like a disrespectful twat to get a new contract - not once, but twice - would be laughable. Thankfully it'll never happen.

Rooney shouldn't do it, he isn't good enough and if he goes there and fails it would be a huge shame for his career to end like that.

Go to America.

Well because he tried to leave us twice for league rivals (City in 2010 and Chelsea in 2013). I don't know Dennis Law's career story that well but Rooney really shouldn't have a statue

Wayne Rooney is increasingly open to the idea of completing the most rancorous and staggering transfer of modern times by leaving Manchester United for Manchester City.

He has informed United he has no intention of signing a new contract and is ready to contemplate following Carlos Tevez's path across Manchester and the potential minefield and recriminations of swapping one club for the other.

Carlos Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, confirmed today that he would be interested in Rooney if he could establish any sense on the player's part that he would be willing to move to Stamford Bridge. But the reigning Footballer of the Year is leaning more towards City, acutely aware of the potential riches of joining the wealthiest club in England.

I don't know why fans care so much about wages. Pogba and Ibra are on the sort of wages they absolutely don't deserve either if you see how they're performing. If you want to slate Rooney based on his performances, fair enough but this wage nonsense has gotten ridiculous over the years.

Transfer rumors is all it was. It was pretty easy to link him to our biggest rivals at that point.

Of course the idea of getting a statue for the top goalscorer for England and Manchester United is hilarious. I can't stop laughing.

It may not happen, and though I can see more reasons for a statue than against, it's just my opinion.
The notion is by no means laughable, however.

Again, I don't understand this concept of a player willingly leaving to another club for less pay. Any reputable financial advisor would tell him to put his head down and collect all the wages promised to him in his contract, unless Man Utd are willing to pay him off.

I apologise if it came across as me laughing at your opinion. I just hate the thought of a player getting a statue when they tried to force a way out of the club twice and took on a true club legend like Sir Alex.

Who gives a feck about what he's done for England? There's a feckload of players who should be in line for a statue before him.

Denis law played for city and scored a back heel that confirmed united to relegation

I think this is Rooney's management team trying to paint the situation as him 'returning' to Everton to lead them to glory, the boyhood fan giving back to the club that started it all for him

I don't really mind tbh
