The difference with Iqbal and Savage was the genuine suprise, to anyone who has followed Mainoo this is no suprise at all. He’s a different level to those.
To me, the biggest difference is that Savage and Iqbal were afraid to manipulate the ball with opponents nearby. They were tidy in passing out of danger.
Mainoo seems comfortable with pressing opponents and technically sound to play out of trouble.

Let's see, I think Ten Hag is waiting to see if he will get a midfielder in (Amrabat?) before deciding to keep or send Mainoo on loan.

Obviously there’s only so much you can read into preseason matches where everyone isn’t fully trying and intensity levels are varying, but certain traits really stand out in his game — how willing he is to show for the ball in the build-up and when he’s under pressure; his clever movement for the first goal etc… — central midfield is a really tough spot to crack through as a young player and it’s not normally one where impact subs are given frequent minutes to make something happen (contrast to in attack, see Garnacho last season), but let’s hope Mainoo gets some decent game time this season.

Looks very promising. Should be among the first team squad this season pushing for a starting place, playing in the cups etc.

On top of all his obvious qualities, he seems to have the discipline to follow instructions to a tee, which I guess is something rare enough for young players coming up in that position. The manager will love him for it.

What a player we have on our hands, for such a young man, he plays with great maturity. Pretty much kept Havertz and Odegaard quiet.

I watch the academy sides regularly and in my opinion he is genuinely a £100m+ level talent. He is a much better footballer than many of the top young £100m touted DM's out there. (Caicedo, Tchouameni, Rice). He just needs to continue to develop his positioning and tactical side of the game. DM is a new role for him, he's most often been used as an 8.

Let's calm down on the hype. There's still a long way to go for the lad.

I hope Southgate doesn't try to get him into the England set up asap. I want him to develop gradually under ten Hag, a bit like Garnacho has done.

Ten Hag managed Garnacho pretty well last year so hopefully does the same with this guy.

Pre season games are meaningless. I will judge him once he plays a full half of PL football. That will take a while, ETH wont throw him in, he is very cautious in that regard.

Looks really exciting. Hope he does see some good minutes this season as we were excited about Iqbal last year and he didn’t get anywhere near it.

Does look on another level though so I’m cautiously optimistic.

He's the type of player that would look good playing in flip flops.

The kids a baller.

Woah nelly, take is easy there!

Yeah, he does look another level to Iqbal and it was the same in youth games. Mainoo actually got a couple of chances last season ahead of other youngsters. It's clear Ten Hag rates him much higher than other players his age at the club.

Yep last seasons appearances are what give me hope that he’ll be a regular squad rotation option. It’s nice to have a talented centre mid come through that looks ready too. Could save us a boat load of money.

Looks a talent with the physical profile to cope with the PL at an early age. Would much rather he is intergrated and trusted than bringing in journeymen like Amrabat.

Is he a local lad? I saw his wiki say he's been with us since he was 9 years old, and that he's from Stockport which should be Greater Manchester, is that considered as local?

Yes. But Stockport is pretty much enemy territory too.

He has to be in the first team squad this season without a doubt. He plays above his years and show incredible understanding and maturity in that midfield role.

Very very exciting.

So far I have Seedorf, shades of Bellingham and 100m player noted from the predictions of him.

TBF most Stockport lads are huge City Fans so this is is unusual, England under 18 international too, he’s rated throughout the FA and United youth set ups.

Reckon he will better than Enzo or Tchouameni in 2 years time.

Why do people feel the need to make these wild predictions based on a few good pre season performances?

Just be satisfield that he's a player ETH will trust increasingly this season and will be an improvement on McFred

What els is there to go of? Surely pre season is for youngsters to impress… especially when you play top level opposition. I’d understand if people got carried away if we played like a league 2 team but he looked comfortable playing against a team that finished 2nd in the prem.

Pre-Season is generally pretty dull, one of the fun things about it is getting overly excited when academy players play well. God knows why some people feel it is their duty to come and pour cold water on the excitement.

He looks extremely talented and you could easily confuse him with a far more experienced player.

It's been ages since we even got a squad player from the youth to play in midfield, so I'd love it if he does a Garnacho.
