Kim Min-jae | signed for Bayern

The Kalidou Koulibaly precedent makes me think as good as Kim Min Jae might be, I won’t be sad if we miss out on him.

The reaction here is bit over the top, and during the transfer window is getting quite ridiculous. Every tweet is an opportunity seized by the Caf to be negative about the club. Reports only said that we were interested, not that we absolutely wanted him.

We've been heavily linked by every major source, and even beyond that the thought that "we didn't actually want him" might be even worse than missing out because he chose Bayern over us because that's just pure incompetence.

Koulibaly is a terrible example as he's a different profile of player not to mention was much older when he moved to Chelsea.

Yup. You basically get world class level CB for the price of a mediocre PL midfielder, but so many here seem to not understand the concept of value and then wonder how teams like Real and Bayern "reload" all of the time when they do deals like this constantly even when it's not a "need"

Two clubs light years away from us in terms of how they are run.

What is the Kalidou Koulibaly precedent?
Koulibaly was supposedly the best CB in the world, we were « heavily linked », it was a shame not to get him and so on.
He ended up signing for Chelsea a couple years later and turned out… well we all saw how he turned out for Chelsea.

The market for talented young CBs is quite vast, there are other alternatives we could buy

Their success isn't a coincidence

100% agree. When you are run mediocre you tend to be mediocre. Which for the past 10 years sums us up perfectly.

I was hoping this summer was going to be the start of something new and better but we might need to wait until next summer now and hopefully the correct buyer eventually completes the sale and demands the best in class in scouting and recruitment etc.

Unless this changes, nothing will in my opinion.

I'm fine if the Qataris fire all of the people involved in running the club over the past 10 years. No special carve outs for Murtough / blame games. Just get rid of them all.

Agreed. And no I don't want to rely on ETH either for targets. It's hard enough being a manager, his evaluations of players at other clubs isn't going to be good enough for him to do everyone elses job as well.

Like @Valencia Shin Crosses said, by the time Napoli finally agreed to let him go, he was past his prime. It doesn’t really tell us much.

Why the feck would anyone want sign for Bayern? Especially over Utd? Feckers have won their league 11 years in a row.

Imagine not signing a player because Maguire doesnt want to leave. A competitive club would kick the fecker out. He has to think about his NT place.
We should be adding KMJ anyway. Then by hook or by crook get rid of Maguire. Tell him he’ll part of the reserves, lower the asking fee, cover a % of his wages if needed. You don’t halt squad building due to his sale taking time - which is always was going to.

A player choosing a club like Bayern over Man Utd is nothing to do with incompetence. The same Bayern is losing out on Rice to Arsenal.

Players choose clubs for a variety of reasons. Get over it.

That’s probably why? They’ve got that league by the balls and are (usually) a strong team in Europe too. United are going through a spell which has seen us reach 10 years without the title and no real title challenge in that time either.

Maybe for that exact reason. He’s just won the league in Italy and knows he’ll have a good chance at winning a German league. Some players just care about instant success and trophies and don’t want a challenge. Plus as there even been a Korean player play for Bayern?

We don’t really know the reason but it could be incompetence if we could have acted sooner but didn’t. feck knows, in this specific case though.

But we have often been incompetent this past decade so it’s something we are used to from United

Yep just par for the course with this club

I don’t care whoever owns us next season just as long as we have a monumental clear out of the people who are in charge of transfers, the way this club conducts business is embarrassing.

If this hinges on Maguire leaving than it’s even more comical from us, we should literally tell him you won’t be playing at all therefore lose your international spot, no wonder we can’t actually get rid of players.

I don't think we will sign anyone before take over, maybe we will try to deal someone on loan on 31st Aug

I don’t think he is a Ten Hag type player.

I just wanted him because he looks like a good deal to activate at such a low price.

I think if the price was 65m+ above - I don’t think people would be interested in him near as much as he wouldn’t fit our tactics or even balance with Lisandro Martinez as much as people think.

That was always going to happen. As if we would do a deal this early in the summer for such a calibre of player. Too good to be true

Walk the league without trying, guaranteed Champions League qualification or battling for top 4 with likely no trophies or minor domestic trophy? Jeez I wonder why players go Bayern over United.

It would be incredibly stupid to lose on him after showing interests for so long. His dream is known to be playing in the EPL and Bayern having the advantage just means only one thing which is that they have been more actively convincing him. If Man Utd had just a bit of serious interest, he would have made up his opinion long ago imo. But let's keep the fingers crossed for a late minute twist when his release clause is active in July.

I doubt we are too serious about this
CB is not a top priority right now. We can easily manage with Martinez, Varane, Lindeloff and Shaw for another season.

Kim won’t be guaranteed a starting place in the Utd lineup that’s probably a big factor

I think he is. More so than Varane anyway. EtH appears quite pragmatic, but values two traits in his CBs;

- They being aggressive/good at pressing,
- Being good on the ball,

That is two boxes Kim ticks. But I agree that if Kim was expensive, we would have looked elsewhere.

I agree it's not priority no. 1 (striker / cm), but we can't go into next season with those 4 as centre halves. First of all, Shaw is a LB and whilst he played there a few times as was decent, I don't think we should be classifying him as one.

Plus, for sake of argument those were our 4 centre halves, we'd be potentially two long term injuries away from having to play Lindeloff / Shaw as CB and Malacia as LB week in week out against the likes of City / CL opponents for a number of matches with no back up.

Could we manage for a few games throughout the season, possibly. We can't manage with the 4 mentioned for an entire season imo

Fair point. But I don't think competition for places is why he'd choose them over us either way.
I think there's a good CB at OGC Nice who we should target. Jean Clair Todibo would be a shrewd move on our part and he has the technical and athletic capabilities to be a real asset both in possesion and at controlling large spaces due to his anticipation and speed.

We will end up signing players that nobody else wants because they are average and therefore easy to get. Great.
