Kevin Strootman

The thing is that Strootman is much more similar to Herrera than Carrick or Blind.

From what I've seen of him, I'd have to disagree with that. Strootman looks a far more calming and disciplined presence to Herrera and is far more physical.

Seems a bit pointless to compare him to any of our midfielders, or even say who he's closest to in style.
He's a box to box unlike Carrick, but he's not nippy and scrappy like Herrera. He's his own player.

I'd actually say that none (or very few) of his qualities are uncovered by our current set, but none of them have the range of qualities that he has.

Good point. He's probably more his own player than a combination of ones we try to compare him with.

We should send Chicharito to Roma to sweeten the pot for them. He wants consistent first team football and is likely to get it there with the likes of Gervhinho standing in his way.
Yes let's ruin his "Goal - The Movie" dream  That'd be hilarious!

I'm not sure, but there probably is a chance that he could be banned. There would appear to be a fair amount of evidence against him and as he plays for United, it is his face that is all over the papers. Some people reckon that this could be dragged on for months to over a year and the whole ordeal could have a real negative impact on him.

I don't think it is looking good though, judging from the overall tone in the Herrera allegations thread.

It is as miserable as Jamie Carragher after a Liverpool game over there.

Did we have any inkling of this before we signed him?

I've not followed this saga much but quite frankly if we're going after someone with a recent bad knee injury I want them to have at least half a season under their belt before we approach them. I don't care how good they were and potentially can be, if they've recently had a very bad injury I'd prefer them to have 6 months of more or less consistent football before we even think of signing them.

I'd rather not sign him in January. He has to prove his fitness and that he is capable of playing like he did pre-injury. Agree with those saying that they don't want a repeat of Falcao.

So we won't sign Vidal [a comfortably better and fitter player] because of his injury apparently but we'll now throw 30 odd million at Strootman, who has had a more serious injury, played only about an hour of football in ages and is yet to prove his fitness. I won't put it past United to sign him in January, some of our transfer business don't make any sense at times.

Strootman is fit and playing again.

He's much more physical than Herrera.

Is he though? He's bigger than Herrera, but Herrera's a pest and very physical player. From the limited amount I've watched him, he reminds me of Carrick from 06-08. Similar way of playing the box to box/CM role.

He is similar to that Carrick, just a bit more physical and a bit more of a leader IMO. As for Herrera, I've never regarded him as particularly physical. He has a good engine and is capable of harrying, but I don't see him clattering into opponents like Scholes, for example.

We could be doing with this guy in our team. Carricks in his late stage of his career. He's a good player a leader with a touch of everything passing physicality touch mobility aggression yep sign him up. And whilst we are at it if we are selling Fellaini I'd get Khederia also as he's another leader with a good physical presence. Would be nice to have a couple of these players in our engine room bossing games and complimenting our more skilful players.

if he can prove over the next 6 months or so that his serious injury is all behind him and get to the level he used to, then no problem we should go and get him. he'll definitely add quality to our midfield.

I wish LvG wasn't quite so obsessed with this guy, it feels like we are overlooking other good options, at least if the media is to be believed.

Yes, there certainly is a lot of truth in that statement mate, although to be fair we can't quite be sure amid all the media exaggeration. From a purely football perspective, one would have to put any one of Koke or Schneiderlin or Gundogan (same boat in terms of fitness) on a higher level as #8s. The latter two would be even cheaper than Strootman I reckon and Koke, though a bid more expensive promises infinite potential. Also Tielemans and Saul..

So much truth in that statement, though, I'll replace "good" with "better".

You must have missed those big slide tackles that he was putting in earlier in the season and for Bilbao.

He's a physical player, just isn't a very strong physically (more just average in that case, isn't a tiny weakling like Mata or something). He definitely gets stuck in more then almost anyone else in our squad. Not sure if saying he doesn't clatter opponents like Scholes is a bad thing though since Herrera is a very good tackler actually.

Strootman will be immense for us. Just because he's been poor in his first 20 minutes in over 6 months....some fans are thinking he must be rubbish....Van Gaal named Strootman, Robben and RVP as his only untouchables in the dutch team before he got injured. If that dutch idiot didn't label Strootman as the dutch gareth barry then Moyes probably would have signed him 18 months ago

I'd be shocked if we don't sign Strootman, maybe not in January but definitely the summer, LVG clearly loves him and has made it public, Strootman cleary knows how loved he is my LVG and would jump at the chance to sign for us!

More than likely however, he'll have to try force through a move as Roma don't want to sell him unless it's for silly money!

He even changed the whole Dutch setup because Strootman got injured and LVG himself said there is nobody who can replace him... High praise indeed

I thought out interest in Koke might lead somewhere but it seems to have died with Moyes. I look at those options and think it's a shame we are so tunneled on Strootman or that we can't bring in two as LvG seems like he is going to play Rooney as a #8. Tielemans age means he could be Carrick's replacement in a year or two. ;)

Who would you rather have?

Who are these other good options? Out of curiosity

Koke, Schniederlin, Gundogan, Verratti, and for as much stick as I'll get for it, Barkley.

While I agree that Roma will try for silly money. I've read recently the the Roma fans aren't massively in love with Strootman(mainly because of the links with us)and he's being booed and few times this season

All of those are good options, but the manager knows what he wants. You can't be certain that those players are out of the question.

Ha, another one I forgot to mention earlier. But I have one major grievance against the dude. He has a Phil Jones-esque niggling injury record. Both great players and talents but hindered by being sidelined during their developmental stages. That said, if we're going to include Strootman and Gundogan in the list of possible acquisitions then it's only fair to have Ross too. If he can stay fit, he has Ballack or Lampard type of potential. Plus we won't have to worry about any future transfer headaches with him being English and from the northwest. Could get a Rooney like 10-15 years of service out of him. :D

I thought you were going to say he has Phil Jones face issues. :D He's so naturally gifted and physically suited to the PL that I think we'll regret it if he goes to City or Chelsea. As you say he's a real meat and potatoes Englishman, he's not likely to go abroad so buying him would be the same kind of long term investment as Rooney, Shaw and hopefully Jones and Smalling can still be.

That's true and I trust LvG, I guess he could look to add more to the midfield than just Strootman.

Am I the only one who doesn't think we'll buy him?

-------------Carrick--------------
-------Herrera-----Di Maria-----

--------------Blind---------------
-------Strootman-Fellaini-------

Now we're talking. Some excellent strength in depth.

It'll be one of the powerhouses in there with Herrera or Di Maria I think.
