I think their best CB partnership is Castan-Manolas but they haven't played it that much this season (only one time against Empoli if I remember correctly). I like De Rossi as CB as well from what I've seen from him at Italy's national team, but not convinced it's his best position. I actually think Cole has done all right, and Holebas is also a very good left back. I'd have nothing against Rodriguez signing for Roma though, he's one of the best left backs in the world right now, imo.

I think it might go down the wire in this year's title race. I still get angered when I think about the game in Juventus, fecking referee. Roma just have to keep winning their home games and get as much points as possible from their aways, I've got a feeling Juventus is there for the taking this year. They're the only conterder for the Scudetta though, all the other teams are way off.

Yup, Castan and Manolas should be the CB pair but Castan still hasn't recovered from injury. Cole has done all right in some games in other he hasnt been that good but overall he's been decent. If we'll go for Roriguez probably one of the LBs in the team will leave since there are already three LBs in the team, Cole, Holebas and Emmanuelson.
As for Scudetto I think it's this year or never at least they should play like that. If Roma will be close to the title in May I'll try to go to the last game, I think they're playing at home. :)

But it looks like he's very close to Van Gaal and Strootman

So he's a "Daily Star category journalist" (Bullshiter) in your opinion??
Most of the dutch journalist etc are wank and don't know this kind of stuff, everybody at Voetbal International just says what comes up in their head, there is a chance tho that he'll come in the summer I reckon. You also dont really have as much popular journalist, we have few tabloids/newspapers who are reliable.

well what a surprise. Of course Strootman wanst to play for us under van Gaal. It is just a matter of meeting Romas valuation and him proving his fitness.

I think 'risky' is the word you're looking for.

Considering the injury problems we've had, it'd be sheer stupidity to even entertain this idea because it is such a risk. If we were still the team we used to be, then fair enough take a punt. Unfortunately we're playing catch up and signing players with such big question marks over them is daft.

Which would indicate a summer move, once he's proved his fitness, and not a January move.

Strootman is defo the modern box to box general we need so fingers crossed we get him.

Strootman arriving in the summer along with Hummels, Depay and Sinkgraven and I think the excitment on here would manifest into one giant jizz exploding atomic bomb, the like of which has never been seen before. Who the bloody hells sinkgraven?

Never even heard of him

Strootman, Depay, and Hummels would be quite epic.

I'm really not convinced Hummels is the answer to our injury hit defence.

He may not be. Van Gaal may opt for a cheaper less known player few have heard about. But getting Hummels wouldn't be a bad thing either, as long as we're not fleeced on the price by Dortmund. There's a lot of talk about Reus moving in the summer, in which case they may not be interested in selling Hummels as well.

Depay and Strootman would be great though. Both are ready for a bigger club.

Hugo Borst is a very strange guy, proper nutjob at times. More of a writer than a journalist at the moment. Liked his book on Van Gaal. He's a lifelong Sparta Rotterdam supporter (LvG and Strootman played there) and has known Strootman pretty well personally for years, though it's not like they were best friends or anything. At times Hugo goes paranoid or has a strange meltdown, very amusing I think, but he has written some brilliant football stories over the years.

In this case he's not putting it out there like it's a done deal, so he is just guessing. It might be a guess based on something he knows, although Strootman to United isn't exactly a wild guess, so he might know nothing more than we do.

Can go either way. There is a good chance that it can be an epic disaster as well.

Hummels is a slow, injury-prone player. I am not sure he has the physicality or the pace to play a high line in the English league. Is he a 35m pound defender?

Depay looks like a pace merchant, excelling in a mediocre dutch league.

Strootman is recovering from an ACL injury, which is never good. Also, hasn't performed for a sustained period at the top level. Do we want to invest 30m-40m on a player like that? He we would have been a good bet at 17m euros before his move to Roma. I am not sure anymore.

I'm not convinced Strootman is necessarily what we need, not Hummels for those who mentioned him. If he was going to come in and sit, then I would be more open, however, as a 'box-to-box', I'd like to think we would be looking at a player with a bit more athleticism. Certainly, the top all-rounders I've seen, especially in the Premier League. The likes of Gerrard, Keane, Vieira, Essien - Strootman is not this kind of athlete, he is more Matic to me.

Except for Vidal and Pogba, the players you mention don't no longer exist. If he can add what Matic does that would be perfect.. he's always reminded me of Carrick.

Here's a comparison of Strootman last season with other midfielder's

Strootman is pretty much a complete all around midfielder. And the biggest question over him was can make the step up and he's shown at Roma he can.

I think it would be wise of us at this stage to not pursue crocks, to be honest. In fact, I'd like us to stay clear of anyone who even resembles a crock. Anyone who has ever had a sore shoulder should be avoided. Someone who has just recovered from a major injury break would probably, well, die - literally just collapse and die - as soon as he set foot at OT.

Strootman was born to play for man utd.....can't wait to see him here....I must admit that the excitment in signing him vanished when some dutch clown described him as 'the dutch gareth barry'.... but he has gone on to be as good in italy as pogba is and I get the feeling he will make a huge impact here along the lines of Jaap Stam

I would prefer we sign him in the summer and not now. I'd like to see him prove his fitness first. Look at Vidal, he's knee's still giving him issues and it's still not 100%. We can't afford to sign players that might have injury concerns.

he would have been perfect for 17m like 18 months ago and before his serious injury too.

anyway with van gaal in charge now, it looks like it is only a matter of time before we put in a bid for him. don't think we will go for him this january though. next summer could be the time. hope he can prove himself for the next 6 months that the injury no longer bother his performances and body.

I'd say he's complete the opposite to Matic, and is a lot more suited to the 'box to box' role. Having said that, Van Gaal did play Strootman in the holding role for Holland, but I feel that, if we were to get him, we'd be restricting his energy and attacking abilities if we were to play him in the holding role.
