Kevin Strootman

Mainoldo, you seriously can't be basing this off of one game. I don't know much about Strootman but your post reads as a bit unfair to me.

Well all i have been hearing of Dutch pundits is that he's pretty average, his national team coach liked him to Barry. Then i watch him and he plays just like Barry. Unless he's going to flip something out the blue in the next match.. Maybe this is just him. Just saying..

Quite tired of this pace argument bollocks. He's no slower than quite a lot of the great midfielders we've seen as of late. People on here go on like he's slower than a love child of Titus Bramble and Jelavic.

It's muppet season though, as it always is once we're in the transfer period, just full of people talking massive amounts of nonsense and judging players on youtube clips or one game that they've seen them in or even "OH BUT MY DUTCH MATE TOLD ME HE'S A SHIT WHITE VERSION OF DJEMBA DJEMBA!". Others shined tonight because Strootman had a completely different role and job to do for Holland, amazingly some people fail to realise that.

Javi Martinez had a job to do in Spain's last U21's tournament but boy did we know about it. So don't give us that rubbish.. I couldn't name a fast centre midfield besides Anderson and Ramieres.. So i don't get this pace argument either.

That part about Barry was actually a misinterpretation but that's a small part of the discussion. Your overall point is fair. It just seemed you were basing it on views expressing surrounding this one game. I usually don't get caught up in what others say if I haven't seen the player myself. I have not seen enough of Strootman to know much about him. Therefore, if he does come here, I'll build my opinion on how he applies himself in our team.

I'm not even going into a debate with you when your last post was about how you've listened to fecking 'Dutch Pundits' and seemingly only watched him for the first time tonight. That all followed after you told us he's a "shit version of Carrick" and that you'd rather 'Fallaini' or fecking Anderson.

I watched Ronaldo play one U18's game for Portugal i said this player is class. If you need to watch Strootman play 10 games before you can make an opinion thats fine. I'll wait and you can get back to me. The worse thing is alot of us are giving positive feedback because he's linked with us.. If he was by some chance moving to Arsenal i bet alot of people's opinion would change and they wouldn't have to see him play numerous games.

To be fair, whether you have seen him ten times or just once, this all seem very underwhelming compared with the likes of Thaigo.

What does Thiago have to do with anything, really? He's not going to help with our overreliance on Carrick. That's why we need someone like Strootman (not necessarily him).

I didn't watch Strootman yesterday, so I'm quite surprised when some have said on here that he was poor. I've personally never seen him have a poor game - average a couple of times, but never poor.

Going by from what I've seen him over the past few months - I still want him, and I'll be thrilled if we signed him. I guess I would be happier if we signed Thiago, just because I think he has more to his game - but Strootman is a player who'd thrive in the PL in my opinion.

He was not poor at all, but he kept it very simple and did nothing to stand out - something his manager probably asked.

Maher was the one given a free role in the midfield to join the attack, and no doubt he "stood out" more.

I think Strootman helped keep the defence intact, especially in the first half made some good interceptions and clearances.

Also showed he was not scared to tackle, and at 1 point hurt him and the other player in a 50/50 challenge.

Need to see more of him really, I dont know if he will actually improve us at present, but could be a back up to Carrick on the defensive side.

Thiago is where it's at. It's inevitable that everyone will jump on that bandwagon after the majority favouring Strootman only a week ago. Strootman is very underwhelming in comparison.

Thiago and Strootman are completely different players though, and I personally think that a player such as Strootman is more of a necessity at this point. We need another CM besides Carrick that's capable of effectively winning the ball in the middle of the park. Fletcher can do that, but he'll probably never get back to the level he was at a few season's back.

The ideal situation would be to bring in two CM's in the mould of both of these players. Fellaini or Strootman and Thiago would be some bit of business.

you are right. i think we need to invest on 2 midfielders this summer. remember we have only carrick(who is 31 now), cleverley( exciting at times but still some work to be done), and anderson ( a very good option to have for 60 minutes in a game). fletcher is very much unlikely to reach anywhere close to his 2008-2010 level let alone matching it. and jones is not a CM. an injury to carrick and we are in deep danger.

one midfield signing is a must. 2 would be excellent. someone like thiago would be very good for a start.

I think it's right not to judge him on one game - but to be fair, I watched it and he didn't look particularly impressive. While its ok not to expect too much as captain, in an under 21 tournament you'd expect a player who is suggested as a potential answer in a problem area for a league winning side to show a bit more.

To be fair the knee jerk reactions are no more annoying than someone like you talking him up based on an rank average performance.

He wasn't poor by any stretch. It was a 6/10 performance.

The game seemed to pass him by really. Having said that though, it was clearly Holland's tactics to focus on wing play so I'd argue it wasn't entirely his fault. Still could have done better though.

This signing would be almost as underwhelming as all the talk of us signing this Varela kid from Uruguay.

No need to wait, I've seen him play way more than 10 times already and I'm not somebody like you who sits there, watches a guy for one game and then proclaims him to be shit or take the word of some fecking Dutch Pundits as the gospel.

Someone like me? Feel free to point out where I've actually talked him up? Go on, do it. Please do, point out the post where I've talked him up.

I haven't even mentioned a single opinion of mine regarding Strootman in here, but don't let that get in the way of the mass amounts of shit now being spoken.

In fairness, when do non-United fans watch us and say Carrick stood out? Very rarely, if ever, and look how important Carrick is to us.

I didn't see the game yesterday, neither have I seen enough of Strootman to have a particularly valid opinion, but people shouldn't be put off because of that I don't think.

I am quite intrigued by Strootman, having not seen him play at all I am wary to take everything I read on here as gospel, one minute he is great, then the next he is crap. I Guess only time will tell if he is a good buy should be buy him.

When players like this crop up in which the general consensus is undecided I try and just convince myself that the club and the scouts know exactly what they are doing.

Okay mate.. So besides being a Carrick understudy which we don't need for £15m plus. What will he offer? Get of this Dutch pundit crap too.. I don't need anyones advise to judge a player.. I'm quite happy with my own personal analysis on players.. My judgements aren't pretty bad...

All I'm getting from this Strootman thread is a bunch of people that really don't know much about him but because he is a midfielder and we have apparently shown concrete interest he must be good.. We get them all the time might aswell be Steven Defour for all i care.

Are you saying we don't need an understudy for a player who is turning 32, is an integral part to our team, and plays a role that nobody else in our squad can offer? Now's the perfect time to look for an understudy for Carrick, whilst preferrably also being able to play alongside him for the time being.

Yeah... I hate signing promising young players me

That's a shame because I don't. I'm not excited by it neither though. If you get all giddy with excitement about the prospect of us signing some unkown kid from Urugay and a bloke from Netherlands that dissapoints in a U21 game I'm really happy for you. It's so beautiful to see top fans like you that still get excited by those kind of things after all those years of success. Thank you.

Yes. Thats exactly what i am saying. Would you want us to spend £15m on Leighton Baines with Evra still here? I want someone to play with Carrick not fill in when he's injured or needs a rest.

No because not only is Baines 5 years older than Strootman, but we have ample cover for Evra in Buttner and Fabio whereas there's nobody who can really play Carrick's role, especially now that Scholes has retired. We need somebody who can ease Carrick's game time, and Thiago certainly isn't the answer. Strootman seems to be able to screen the defence much like Carrick does for us, he's highly rated by the Dutch national set up and has plenty of first team experience.

Not for the price quoted. I would expect alot more. Who replaces Xavi for Barca? I don't see them paying £15m for back up. It just doesn't make business sense. Realistic what we need is a player to make up for Carrick's weaknesses. Thiago and a player like Fabregas offer this..

If that was an attempt at being a condescending plonker then you failed. Well, at the condescending part anyway.

You're just talking shit. First you bring up Dutch Pundits and now apparently you don't need their advice to judge a player and you're happy with your own personal analysis. Didn't you give the impression that last night was the first time you've watched him? That's your analysis? You then go on to tell us that nobody in this thread knows much about him (Please stop doing that, you haven't a clue how many times people in here have watched him. We've been linked with Strootman for a couple of years now, people haven't just started watching him like you seem to have done).

Embarrassing yourself would be an understatement. What's the point in providing an argument as to what he will offer when you'll just reply with more nonsense and rubbish it all based on what a few dutch pundits have said and your one game viewing of him?

You said in the post I quoted that others around him "shined" because of the job he did and that you were "amazed" that other people didn't see that.

I personally thought he looked nothing special. It's one game of course and hopefully he does something to impress next time out. I thinks it's fair to say people feeling underwhelmed is a reasonable response.

I wasnt. Just a bit fed up with oversensitive twats like you that get through the roof or try to be clever whenever something negative is said in here. Especially the ones that are upset about things that have never been said, like you.

 Sounds like you're the once that's a little oversensitive mate. It's not me that's been throwing around the insults.

What I get fed up with are people on here that moan about everything and anything to do with United's transfer policy. Here we are discussing a young midfield player (who plays the role we've been begging for) that's been capped for the senior Holland side and is the captain of the U21s yet you're "underwhelmed"? Boo-hoo.

Yes I am. I have no problem with us buying him or this Varela kid. I just can't get excited over it so yeah for me it's underwhelming. That's it more or less, not that much moaning is it? I'm sure you can get over that.

I asked you what does he offer as a player, considering you seem to be in the know about him. Couldn't careless about what else you have to say. Your talking like the only thing I've said on Strootman is that my Dutch neighbour said he was shit.

I'm sure I can too. Not sure where you got the impression that I couldn't :)

For all we know Stootman might just be another kevin hofland :)

And you class that as talking somebody up mate?

I consider it a bit smug - you've got your opinion that he played well, and fair enough. But then you're telling us that if we didn't see it we're wrong. So wrong that you're "amazed" we didn't see it.

It's the line the apologists use over certain players - I.e. "he didn't have a bad game, he just sacrificed himself for the team".
