A guy at work just proclaimed Kendrick Lamar to be the best ever. I said he'd struggle to make Top 10.
Maybe i had a rush of blood to the head, but where do you pitch him against the all time greats, and who are clearly better?
2Pac / Biggie / Nas / Snoop / Dre / Ice Cube / Eminem / Jay-Z / Ghostface Killah / Rakim - all better than Kendrick Lamar? Any others....
I'm not particularly well versed with Ice Cube, Snoop or Ghostface so I won't comment there. As for the rest...
2Pac - Kendrick is a better rapper from a technical standpoint, but so is everyone else. For me it's Pac's ability to communicate emotion through rap that sets him head and shoulders above everyone else for me. That continues to be the case.
Biggie - Controversial, but I'll give this one to Kendrick. Biggie is always the guy I knock from the traditional top 5 (Pac, Big, Nas, Em, Hov) in favour of an Andre 3K or Rakim. Body of work is a big one for me here, Kendrick has had such a solid streak of incredible albums to me that Biggie, for reasons beyond his control obviously, can't touch.
Nas - I have a soft spot because stylistically he's my favourite of all time. Nas > Kdot
Dre - Amazing producer but as a rapper I don't think he's in this conversation despite two classic albums.
Eminem - Despite his significant decline, his peak still above Kendrick for me. But the longer one continues to put out subpar albums while the other puts out classic after classic, the greater the chance this changes. Em is crazy though, that's a tough one for me.
Jay-Z - Kendrick well above, Hov is the other guy I'll bounce from a top 5 for the aforementioned two. He's got a handful of great albums and Reasonable Doubt is incredibly underrated, but the overall strength of Kendrick's 4 studio albums wins out
Rakim - Tough one again since Rakim was a) incredible, b) basically laid the path for every good rapper after him. I'm gonna cop out and call it a draw
