Music Kendrick Lamar

His Grammy performance was epic:

Also loving the song with The Weeknd off the Black Panther OST.

Seeing him tonight for the 4th time
Officially will have seen him more times than I have Beyonce, which is mind blowing to me.

Can't wait!

Concert was pretty good, not my favourite of his ive been to, but still quite entertaining. Really enjoyed the kung-fu aspects and choreo.

There was a few parts where he was like “where are all my day 1 fans? Let’s see if you recognise this one”
*plays Swimming Pools*

Then he would go “we gonna keep testing y’all all night to know who’s really a day 1 Kendrick Lamar fan”
*plays money trees*
“Oh y’all know this one?”

Yeah duh, it’s arguably one of your most celebrated songs.

He could’ve at least went to Section 80 and played Hiiipower, but that’s probably me nitpicking more than anything

Real day one music.

Spiteful chant, blow my high, keisha's song, rigamortus (still his best song IMO) the list goes on and on. still his best body of work IMO.

GKMC still reigns supreme, one of the best albums released this century across all genres imo.

But My favourite concert of his was after section 80 was released in XOYO in Camden - maybe like 300 of us mashed up, while he played a mixture of s.80 and o.d.
Amazing concert.

I wouldn't normally listen to this genre, MBDTF from Kanye aside, which I love. My most played albums would be by The Beatles, Bowie, The Smiths, etc.

But I listened to Good Kid yesterday for the first time, and it was so good. Instantly loved it, and I've listened to it twice today already. Gave TPAB a quick listen, but first impressions weren't as good, but I'll wait a while before going back to it. It might've just been too much in the one day.

Chronologically, you're correct, but it felt like he was still trying to mix and master his sound. OD, for me, doesn't really have Kendrick's sound. You can see it in a few tracks, but it's still the crawling stages. But on s80, it finally clicked. It's like Drake's Room for Improvement vs. So Far Gone. But that's just me.

No you're right.

Side note: Room for Improvement was a very mature project from Drake. He blew up with So Far Gone, but the former has some of his most focused work, rapping wise. Being in the studio with the likes of Phonte must have helped.

I went to a s80 concert in orange county... oh boy those were good times. although when he opened for Kanye on the Yeezus tour, that was a life changing moment for me.

Kanye is another amazing live artist.
The WTT tour is one of my favourite ever concerts, but he did one in Hammersmith after Yeezus, when he was getting mocked for those makes and ranting and stuff - but my god what a great concert that was.

Live music really is the best way to appreciate an artist.

Comeback season >>>>> Room for Improvement for me.

But I agree with the overall point, though I think he honed his ability on Take Care which for me, felt like an extension of SFG

My friends and I were discussing Take Care randomly one day. We reached the consensus that the reason why nothing like Take Care has ever come out again is because that entire project was made by the Weeknd. Once Weeknd blew up on his own, Drake's sound totally changed and why he's transitioned to trap. Not knocking his artistry, but I feel like Drake would've been the ultimate R&B pop god had he continued down the Take Care route, instead of just a pop god.

The Weeknd doesn’t even have the same sound anymore.
That’s a ridiculous claim, considering the one song with the Weeknd sounds different to most of the other songs on the album.

Most of his songs are still rap, it’s only his singles which are pop, plus he’s incorporated different styles of music like reggae, Afrobeat etc. He’s not a pop star at all.

Anyway, this is not for the Kendrick thread.

Ignorance Is Bliss.

Loved the gig but was a little disappointed by the lack of Section 80 material, which for me is peak-Kendrick

Going to the gig tonight, anyone else going?

Question for those who went to the other gigs, when did James Blake start? Wondering what time I should go in the arena.

Seen him last week - my first time but one of the best gigs I’ve been to. Has a great presence despite being a one person show. I love Damn and GKMC so wasn’t too disappointed at the lack of TPAB and Section 80. A downside is that he has such a great discography, there’s a good chance he’ll miss out on many fan favourites.

I love James Blake and enjoyed his performance. He plays that new song though and it’s horrific. Wanted to hear his cover of Vincent and he didn’t play it.

Have a snapchat of him saved at 8:10, educated guess about 7:45.

About 8, but our show started late to try and get people through the doors.

Excellent, thanks @100 and @vi1lain. I don't really listen to James Blake but I'm interested in seeing him live, so I didn't want to miss it.

I had a look on setlist, was hoping for more songs from TPAD, but there's a few songs from GKMC so I'm hyped for that. GKMC is properly my favourite Kendrick album so far

Personally, I think Kendrick would embarrass Cole on a whole album at this point.

I don't know, I feel Cole is a game raiser when it comes to music with Kendrick. He's fully aware of who he's dealing with. Take his verse on Jeezy's song for e.g. I haven't heard Cole go as hard as this since FHD, Jeezy must have told him Kendrick is also featuring and we got this masterpiece from Cole.

That's the problem. Cole has to raise his game to match Kendrick at this point, and Cole hasn't managed to have that level of lyricism consistently for the last 3/4 years like Kendrick has had.
Maybe embarrass is too strong a word, but years ago it was split between who was the better rapper. Now? I don't know many (if any) who could put forward a case that Cole is genuinely a better rapper than Kendrick, except Cole stans.

Cole seems to have killed the idea of a joint album happening now. Still think it could be a possibility though, maybe an EP concept like Black Friday where they don’t even rap together.

IMO they’re lyrically the best 2 artists of this generation. But I rate Kendrick more & think he has more range in his music than Cole.

Lyrically, I'd say J Cole is behind Joey Badass without a doubt.

For someone his age his lyrics are amazing Iv played his albums back to back for ages but just recently took time out to just read his lyrics and he is really underrated as a lyricist.
