Kalvin Phillips

He’s exactly the kind of player we need. He’d make all of our players around him better.

I think Ten Hag will want him too. High energy levels and a position we need. I think he'll surprise people here if we do get him

I’m not totally against signing him even though I think he’s a bit overrated. It’s the price that really puts me off, didn’t Leeds knock back West Ham’s offer of £50m? and even that’s too much for him.

I don’t get why people don’t want him. He’s as good on the ball as Matic and most importantly very high intensity. Him and even a Neves would be good business.

Yea, Phillips is actually I player I think might do well here. He's full of running and his passing is actually pretty good.

Depending on the price, I'd be quite happy with the signing. Hoping this is true and hoping it means we're going to get some business done early, ready for Ten Hag to hit the ground running.

I think he’d be great here and reasonably affordable. Could probably get him and another midfielder for the price of Declan rice on his own.

Him and neves would cost what rice would.

I like Phillips but he wouldn't be my first choice for that role. I would even take Neves over him.

I think most would have Rice above him, if cost wasn't a factor. Fair shout on Neves too, but I think Phillips is better and would be more what we need than him. Both would be nice.

Having both would be nice indeed. We would have passing masters in midfield once again. We haven't had that since Carrick-Scholes.

Big improvement to our team even if not first choice

Nothing about Phillips suggests he's a pass master. Scholes and Carrick were stand out in that department, Phillips is mediocre on the statistics. It's inconceivable those two would have had a similar profile as Phillips on key passing metrics.

What stands out is his work-rate and energy. Which there is certainly an argument for in our midfield even though I personally think he's hideously overpriced for his quality.

His long passing is very good. Short passing perhaps less so. My main concern with him would be his injury proneness really. Can't pay £50m for a guy to only be fit half the season. He'd definitely work out well if he stays fit though. Would still be weird to pass up on some of the cheaper options for him given the risk involved though in my book.

Before his current injury, he's never missed more than 4 games through injury and had only missed 7 in his career through injury.

This is a hamstring injury, so you'd hope no lasting damage, but you're right, his current injury should be a concern, but not a massive one I don't think.

I'm not saying it isn't good as I think that even though he is mediocre statistically, some allowance has to be made for Leeds style which isn't possession orientated, it's more about quick transitions. Although weirdly his progressive passing rates as poor.

Just don't think he should really fall into a category of exceptional passers, even in the current game. Punting a few long balls a game isn't what it's about in my eyes, it is being fundamental in the build up and highly consistent. He has low passes attempted and mediocre completion so I can't see where the idea comes from.

He's a workhorse midfielder. It was even evident for England. Once Rice and Phillips faced Italy we saw the difference between what I'd call pass masters and what we had. That's a one off game but it's probably representative of what these guys can do in terms of controlling the game through passing at the very top. They're not bad by any means but it's not their biggest strength.

I don't think Rice and Phillips are that similar in their passing though. The way I see it Rice is very consistent and effective with his short passing, keeping possession and moving it on but if you need him to be progressive he's much more likely to be effective by going on a drive through midfield.

Phillips is the opposite for me, short passing is fine but nothing special, not particularly brilliant at carrying the ball through midfield, but he can ping a mean long ball. I think it's worth bearing in mind that he's not always had the best forwards to play the ball to for Leeds and you would hope being able to switch the play nicely would be a more useful attribute for us (pisses me off that we hardly ever do it at the moment).

If we do sign him think he'll go down the Carrick route of most fans not liking it and then turning everyone around once he arrives.

Not a bad player but in no way the type of midfielder we need. We have Fred for his role. We need someone able to control the tempo of the game and dictate play.

Short passing is more important, he needs to be very good at them.

We might get two midfielders, I hope we do anyway.

Is his passing that good?

His passing is extremely fast and shot rather than Carrick or Pirlo's finessed passing.

Which is more whats needed in the current game. If we are to be the team that we hope we will be under Ten Hag our midfielders will be camped in the opposition half progressing the ball quickly and efficiently.

I don’t believe Leeds will sell him for £50m, doubt get him for much less than £70m. He’s a decent player but would be another example of overpaying for someone who isn’t and never will be one of best players in the league because they are better than what we have.
