Kalvin Phillips

I would expect Phillpps to be utilised similar to how Bielsa used him in a deeper role and not how Southgate used him.

Fred I don't believe can play that role as effectively deeper. And with Phillips as the deepest midfielder, he can be paired with a controlling #8 ,who not only provides the craft and guile on the ball, but also has the mobility to quickly transition back into position to thwart potential counters.

So for me I'd love to see something like the below in the mid to long-term. And I think Phillips has more to show than what we've seen under Bielsa so far, where in the last year of his (Bielsa) tenure, things got extremely reckless which put the players in the defensive phase under immense pressure. The man orientated pressing which was utilised by Bielsa was something that went badly wrong this season. But I think under a more controlled chaotic type setup we'd probably see a even better Phillips.

Bellingham-----Tonali---

I don't think we're gonna see Tonali leave Milan anytime soon but the above is the template that I'm hoping we look to make a reality. Hannibal has the potential traits to develop into a controlling #8 in the mid to long-term. So I'm hopeful he can come good for us. Everyone attacks and everyone defends.

The Italian midfielder I'd love is Barella. Someone who you can trust to get the ball in the tightest of spaces and still progress the ball. It would be a game changer for us.

We must get Rice ahead of this lad. I know there is a price difference but Rice is elite, improving every year whereas this lad is injury prone and well Leeds

Coming from a foreign fan who really isn't into this local rivalry with Leeds - I really don't see a problem here, but most of you seem to have one with Leeds, so I am leaving myself open here. I do rate him as a player really much and he has the right playstyle for a high-intensity possession-based team.
It worked out okay for us when we signed Rio and Cantona from Leeds. That said, I don’t rate this player. I think he’s another English player that fans are willing him to become a star, but he’s just average.

That type of midfielder is exactly what I want too. A Barella, Pedri, Frenkie type etc.

What was his injury record before this season?

Good player from the few times I've seen. Don't want another crock though.

Fabian Ruiz from Napoli is a good option too, if we want to get a player in that mould. Not as mobile as those three, but has similar tools.

Contract running out in 2023 so would not be that expensive either.

Bruno, Ruiz and Phillips as a midfield trio. McFred and Donny/Hannibal as backup. Garner out on loan for a third season.

We have about 100 scouts and they all watch PL games only.
We believe everything we read in the press don’t we? Journo’s pushing English players names is hardly a surprise.

Yesterday we had Kane, Rice and Phillips linked. What a surprise.

97th percentile for most attempted passes? I’m sold.

In all honesty he's my favourite Leeds player and probably the most important. We've massively missed him and I'd be gutted if you got him for any price. Can't see it happening (or don't want to).

With him in the team this season we've averaged 1.3 pts per game. Without him 0.8. His engine and ability to read the game was often enough to swallow up that ocean of space you've seen us provide countless opponents this season. We'd almost certainly be happily mid table if he'd remained fit, even with all our other injuries.

Buy Rice and feck off :)

Wasn’t sure I wanted him but after reading this I now do. Thanks !

People sometimes really take for granted a players age and assume that he will carry on improving and therefore become a superstar. Less than 1% ever fulfill their potential and I don't see all the extra stuff with Phillips that we can expect to elevate his game with age, the things a DM typically picks up like vision, positioning (improves with experience) he is naturally ahead of the curve with so I don't expect him to improve as much as some people would expect him to.

So you should and I could see Phillips leaving to somewhere but I absolutely can't see us selling him to you. It'd have to be an absolutely monstrous fee to compensate for the inevitable revolt that would take place.

The latter.

I thought it might be.

Kalvin Phillips has great long passing but something I've noticed is that it's not "slow & precise" like Pirlo, Carrick or Scholes passing.

I find Phillips's passing very turbo, a bit like the player can be or play.

Daniel James should have us some friends in the transfer department to be honest

I like James, works his balls off. I keep hoping he'll transform his industry into providing more product but Christ it does seem like you had us over a barrel with that transfer fee.

In general I just don't think his passing is good enough for us. Similar to Laimer. All the intensity in the world means feck all, if you can't properly pass the ball to a high standard as a United starting midfielder.

For the right price I would take him at United for sure.

Got to hope Leeds get relegated.

Barella is a good player and is among the midfielders in Italy who isn't just good on the ball, but is also quick and tenacious in defensive transition, which is very important for a team that wants to transition effectively towards being a proactive attacking team in a compact high block. In such a setup a lack of mobility in a midfielder n the EPL can be very detrimental.

There's a big difference between Serie A and the EPL when it comes to intensity. But Barella is definitely someone that ticks all the boxes for the EPL imo.

There's no point having a midfielder who is good on the ball if he also doesn't have the intensity to match to play in the EPL in a ten Hag system, because controlling the game isn't only controlling possession, but also controlling the defensive transitions. And its about the composition of said midfield which is important and not one individual within that composition that will help you control the game.

And its like Hassenhuttl said earlier in the season, our big problem is not going forward but going backwards.

Yes, always liked him and thought we were genuinely going to sign him before he moved to Inter, the number of quality central midfielders we have been linked with the alst few years makes it even more depressing how poor our central midfield is....VDB the only one bought in and was for me at least never more than a squad signing even with our current midfield

Though I think he is a decent player and did really warm to his personality during the Euros.....for me, he would be such a bang average signing especially with all the niggles he is getting.

Decent on the ball with a good range of passing and a good attitude, but he doesnt improve us defensively in midfield much at all for me. Saw it time and time in the Euros as well which had me bewildered all the plaudis he was getting, he lunges in over exuberant and gets turned just so so much, he is disciplined in his positioning, but I really really wouldnt be excited by him as a signing, £50m odd there are a plethora of better options in my opinion and barely any are at that price either

Kalvin Phillips has to be calmed down by his team mates ahead of games against us because of his contempt for Manchester United. Why do people think he'll come here?

What’s Ruiz like physically and in terms of work rate? He only has a year left on his deal. Could be a great option.

Frankly, it leaves quite a bit to be desired. He's neither the quickest nor the strongest and he's fairly easy to get past. I wrote in the what do we still need thread, that he would work best with Tchouaméni as his partner, since the Frenchman has all the qualities to counter his weaknesses. He's stronger, faster, very physical and very good when it comes to aerial duels. Napoli's main midfield has been Anguissa and him this season, Anguissa is similar to Tchouaméni, so the template would already there and on top of that, Tchouaméni would be an upgrade on Anguissa. I'd still say that Fabián's workrate is decent, according to legaseriea.it, he's 42nd for average distance covered for all players. He's more Carrick than Kante, is what I would say, be in the right position at the right time, rather than actively trying to win the ball back. Napoli are employing a high-press and they have played possession football this season. If we were to hire ten Hag and he'd have us play similarly, it wouldn't be unfamiliar with Fabián. With all of that being said, I'd have doubts pairing him with Fred for example. If I'd have to choose between Fabián and Tchouaméni, I'd choose the latter, despite thinking that we need someone with Fabián's passing ability.
